  • One of Blackwood's supernatural tales, not...quite a ghost story. But a haunting for sure, set, as his best stories are, in the wilderness.

The description of the protagonist's terror was very much felt by this listener. 😵

I am a new subscriber and already appreciate this channel. I like all the Blackwood tales I have ever read...he was great at building up an atmosphere and his way with words..imagine " silence as before the birth of sound."
The narrator has a great , well modulated voice and am looking forward to hear more of him. Thanks for this Blackwood gem 💎 💖

For a different and unsettling tale, read Blackwood's The Man Whom the Trees Loved. Thanks for the post.

Thanks for this. I think that you could slow it down a bit.

Slow down speedy Gonzales. And try adding even a tiny bit of characterisation and interpreting of what you're reading instead of sounding like a text to speak engine just racing through the content with no understanding of what's being read.

Yes, too quick, makes it sound read as opposed to performed

Blackwood is really great, but this is not a story that ages particularly well. "The Indian" as source of terror is a bit passé.

Yes, these old ghost stories often have things that are a little cringworthy about them, though I think Blackwood is not as bad as some.

@@WindyNightStories Absolutely. And one tolerates a good deal in a really good writer, like Blackwood and - if one's tastes run that way - Lovecraft (who is a real racist/eugenicist). I wonder what future readers will cringe at in our current fiction - our depiction of animals?

Go read historical writings of early settling during his time in the late 1800’s - interactions between natives and settlers were still violent on more occasions than we like to admit. There were no cops or anyone to call - it was still quite wild and people could do pretty much what they would like.
