    Hello from Canada and I built my own cnc about 4 or 5 years ago and a friend and I built a laser cutter since then he moved and took the laser cutter so I found it easier and cheaper to buy from China and I have had great luck with it so far. I sailed years ago and am planning to build a boat also. I will be watching and maybe help you if possible.

      Hi thanks dude! Sounds good! I’ve been putting the cnc together in past few days and it seems to come up very well. And if there’s something to make better, I can later use the machine itself to do the parts. It’s also possible to get laser cutter or 3D printer head or anything for this frame.
      Go and check insta/Facebook for more updates. 😊

    how did you make the rails paraller ? i think you should keep an edge up when you machine it on the large milling machine ?

    • @ArcticSeaCamel
      @ArcticSeaCamel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! Thanks for your question. The rails are not yet fully installed. I will make the final adjustment when the whole thing is assembled. The mounting holes on the frame are machined within 1/100mm accurancy but the holes in the rails have some play in them. Another thing to consider is the seam between the two parts of the rails. They have to be very very precise to make the bearing cartridges to slide over them.

    Hi. The VFD is controlled via RS485 ? Thanks in advance

    • @ArcticSeaCamel
      @ArcticSeaCamel  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hi! There's analog 0-10v (if i remember right... might be 0-5...?) output in the CNC controller and the VFD has similar input. So it's just analog voltage adjustment. 0V = no spinning. 10V = full speed which this case is 20000rpm.

    • @ArcticSeaCamel
      @ArcticSeaCamel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi. The mounting surfaces and holes for the racks and rails were machined with great accuracy with a huge CNC-mill in a machine shop. So they're absolutely spot on!
      I did the final tightening for the rails after the whole gantry was assembled. It is as perfect as i can be! :)

      @@ArcticSeaCamel i was not refer to hole accuracy.. coplaner mean that surfaces are level... that are no dips with respect to each other and not cross leged nor twisted from each other

    • @ArcticSeaCamel
      @ArcticSeaCamel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@772777777777777 Oh, of course. Yes, the machine bed is _very_ stiff. And the mounting surfaces were planed at the same level with that big mill as well. I checked the leveling of the rails with traditional water hose method a while ago after I changed the "legs" from those pallets to some plywood pieces and before I made any calibration. It was as accurate as i could see from that. And of course the bed itself is planed with the machine itself.

    What kind of accuracy and repeatability can you attain with this rack and pinion setup?

    • @ArcticSeaCamel
      @ArcticSeaCamel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi. The rack and pinion should be plenty accurate for my application. With the reduction and strong motors it should be fraction of millimeter. Currently I haven’t yet done the final install so there’s a bit of play on the pinion axel still.
      What I’m little uncertain right now is the “power” of those springs I’ve got on the y-axis right now. They might not be strong enough to hold the pinion down at higher speeds. But they can be changed if needed.

  • @delmonilacamel1429
    @delmonilacamel1429 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    There is no issue on quality if you merge two rack gears

    • @ArcticSeaCamel
      @ArcticSeaCamel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, the machine has been working great. Just need to make sure initially that the gantry is square.
      Also you need to be careful when machine is off and motors offline. Then they can be moved with hand and calibration can be messed up for good!

  • @sailingkulali

    How much did that gantry piece cost? Our cnc is an old MASTERWOOD 316k. You’re inspiring me to upgrade the electronics so I can move away from its current controller which I have to edit G code manually. No post processor exists for it. It’s a CN10 controller.
    So tempted to upgrade it to my own electrics. Looking forward to seeing more of these vids!

    • @ArcticSeaCamel
      @ArcticSeaCamel  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi! I tested the backslash initially but I couldn’t measure any with manual tools I had. So I don’t have any compensation for it.
      I would imagine that there is some that can be measured in hundredths of millimetres, but it’s so small that with wooden pieces it’s not noticeable.

      @@ArcticSeaCamel I plan for milling one by 3 meter for Y axe using rack ponion but Im so worry about NOT getting precise cuts because of the backlash, I got an idea to solve the backlash issue 100% which is to use TWO gear per a leg stretched outward from each(they are on same plate), did You got what I mean ?

    • @ArcticSeaCamel
      @ArcticSeaCamel  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@amrsvn-uf2jk Yes I did! Check out RoboCNC's excellent video about this matter: th-cam.com/video/2SAnDSnotZw/w-d-xo.html
      I desided not to do this. It would have been just too complicated for my need. I just kind of took the design ideas from Avid CNC machines.
      As mentioned: I haven't had any problems with backslash. The Rack and Pinion I bought were industrial quality and therefore seems to be very precise. In setup like this it's very important to calibrate the machine well and remember to put the power on always before doing anything with the machine (cleaning etc). If power is off, you can pretty easily move the gantry's either end and mess the calibration!
      One option I looked into was to use two ballscrews and rotate the the bearing (not the screw) in the gantry. It is complicated to build but precision should be much more reliable!
      3 meter ballscrew is too long to rotate, it just start to wobble.

    • @amrsvn-uf2jk
      @amrsvn-uf2jk ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ArcticSeaCamel Thank You so much for this Idea, moving the bearing(not the screw) I like this idea, Im abit worry to rely on rack pinion for precision considerations.

    • @ArcticSeaCamel
      @ArcticSeaCamel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@amrsvn-uf2jk Yeah, there should be solutions to do the trick that way. It's just not that easy. But probably the very best way to do long and very precise machine!
      But of course when going to certain precision you'll start to need separate measuring devices, temperature control etc... 😅
