You're welcome. To create maps of other countries, you'll have to get the geometries of those countries. OpenStreetMap can be helpful for that. And there's an R package called {osmdata} that should be helpful with that.
I recall that in school I once had to analyze a speech about the US being quilt-like as it consists out of so many different groups of people that all come together in the US. Kind of fitting to have a quilt map of the US then. 😀 But that's just something I was reminded of due to your comment. Really, I created the map just to highlight how to ggpattern + ggmaps technique works.You could use this technique to indicate that there is no data available for one of the states.
