If you have an AMD CPU, and enabled whpx instead of haxm and got black screen after windows boot, get into your bios settings and set UMA buffer size to auto. It'll fix the problem.
Hey man I really do like this video, you explained very well. I do have one advice, you should have probably used a better computer, like a quad core or something. I would not virtualize anything on a dual core laptop unless you are just running Windows XP or a very light version of Linux. Maybe that's why base only works? I am not sure. Anyways I do have a question. Can I have this and VMware Workstation installed? I want to be able to run VMware, then this. Also will having Haxm mess up the DPC latency? I do a lot of video and audio editing (especially audio editing) so I cannot afford to have DPC latency spikes. Hyper-V is notorious for having that!
Hmm.....the other cpu types might work, I did not investigate further. HAXM has been deprecated by Intel and the latest QEMU builds do not support it. WHPX accelerator is the way forward working with QEMU on Windows. VMWare and Hyper-V coexist peacefully blogs.vmware.com/workstation/2019/08/workstation-hyper-v-harmony.html . Thank you for your concern; had I a better computer I would have. That is a very nice touch. I rarely get such genuine feedback.
Great video BTW. I have 2 questions: 1. If you use chocolaty, doesn't everything get installed on your OS - C:\ drive? 2. If you install raspian (pi OS) using Qemu, will it emulate the CPU better than something like Virtual Box. I need to run a pi image on a PC and VB just wont do it due to not emulating the CPU correctly according to the guy that made the pi app.

@@frazchaudhry Hi, you do it while being in the grub. You select your boot entry (for example Ubuntu) and you click the E button on your keyboard. Boot edit menu will appear and you write noapic in the linux /boot/vmlinuz.... line. Yeah try messing around in that window, it might look a little bit different on your configuration, but that's exactly what worked for me. Good luck

Are you sure you set up the CPU correctly? Let's say I am on a 5800x3d. I have 8 cores and 16 threads. Wouldn't I set Cores Per Socket to 4 (half of my cores) and Threads Per Core to 8 (half of my threads)? To me, it seems like you got it the other way around? I don't, but I am confused on this part.
For your case Socket Count 1, Cores per socket 4, threads per core 2, cpu count 8, hot pluggable cpus 8 would assign half i.e 8 of your total cpu threads. Quick way is to remember to multiply cores per socket 4 by threads for core 2 i.e 4x2=8. Hope it makes sense and convinces you to cover up ;-). As they say 'clothes maketh a man'. Come on brother, why would you want to loose your religion. Best of luck.
You are absolutely correct about HAXM not working with AMD. You should use WHPX acceleration with QEMU. Look up how to install WHPX on your Windows box; then install QEMU and dabble with QEMU command line. QtEMU will not work with WHPX. If I my hands were not full and there was enough demand I could show a gui which works with WHPX. Till that time scouring the web will be your best.

I know of no precise guide available on the internet to point you to it. Additionally, there is substantial RnD to be done therefore till I lay my hands on an AMD Ryzen box.
Hi Hikmat, runnung sc query outputs this: "C:\Users\wiecz>sc query intelhaxm [SC] EnumQueryServicesStatus:OpenService FAILED 1060: The specified service does not exist as an installed service." I followed the rest of the steps as per yoor advice but my virtual machin would not start at the end. What shoud I do to make it work?
Greetings Richard, your intel haxm installation failed to install therefore your virtual machine does not start. First step is install intel haxm correctly. If you are not following choco to install then go to intel github website and download the latest haxm release; unzip and install, reboot machine and check the query output. Keep me posted.
Thank you for your video it's very helpful, I was able to launch Debian & Ubuntu installers using qemu but unfortunately I reach a screen where it says that it cannot detect any hard drives and loads a list of drivers, does anyone know how to creat a drive? (I tried using qemu-img create with 30 GB but the file produced is around 193 kb)
The hard drive size is dynamically controlled. Starts at Kbs and fills up as the machine is added with data. That is the normal behaviour. Qtemu should detect hard drives, is it of type raw or qcow2?

Wow..Win 10 on Win 10 with Intel HAXM will not work. Win 10 on Win 10 with WHPX just might work. Usoft have designed their OS so that third party virtualization f/w cannot run Win on Win IMHO. They promote their own Hypervisor Platform. If running Win on Win is a must I would recommend Virtualbox or VMWare; otherwise QEMU is great. Hope it helps.

You are free to run any android emulator of your choice on Windows. Yes QEMU can run Android too. Your processor and motherboard should support nested virtualization and you have to pass in your cpu.

Which OS are you trying to run? Hopefully not Windows or macOS. Linux would be a safe bet. Also latest qemu has dropped support for Intel HAXM since Intel has archived HAXM. You need an older version of QEMU to use HAXM.

Oh...then if you are up for it. Try installing arch using the installer script. I would advise watch youtube tutorials for the same and then attempt it on your VM. Should not be very tough. Keep me posted.
I didn't do the intel part because I use a Ryzen but it didn't work though, I did all the process right but for some reason when I want to start the machine it just does not pop up
Yes because you have an AMD processor therefore either use TCG accelerator (which sucks big time) or use WHPX accelerator. Then you will have to use the QEMU command line since Qtemu does not have an option for WHPX. Hope it helps.
@@HikmatEUstad yeah, got Mint running. 2022 would not even start the VM. Honestly QtEmu is too buggy, featureless and no performance difference compared to virtual box. Was cool to try but not going to use it.
OSX is a long shot, with Intel haxm there are several issues with the Windows version of qemu that have not yet been fixed by Intel. Once those are ironed away then we can try Windows. Once that works OSX is the next logical step. If you want to run OSX then get manjaro and install qemu. Next there are detailed guides in my channel for installation of Monterey on Linux using QEMU.

Uninstall qtemu; start over. If there is no uninstaller, then delete the directory where qtemu is installed. I would love to hear back from you on all the different OSes you tried installing; failures and success.

Thanks for the guide. It worked perfectly for Manjaro. The only problem that I have now is that it starts only when I set socket/CPU count/cores per socket/threads per core as 1. I have 4 cores and 8 threads. It wouldn't be that much of a problem, but Fedora doesn't want to work with only one core. There is very little information about it on the internet and I can't find any solution. Please help.
You have not mentioned how many sockets you have, I presume 1. Then for your machine, set socket count as 1, cores per socket as 4, threads per core as 2, Cpu Count as 8, Maximum number of hotpluggable CPUs as 8. This is the max configuration. For lesser configs set socket count as 1, cores per socket as 2, threads per core as 2, Cpu Count as 4, Maximum number of hotpluggable CPUs as 4. Tell me if it worked.
While creating a machine, once I make it to "Machine Summary" and hit Finish. Nothing happens. No matter how many times I press Finish, it doesn't create a machine. Any solution? I believe it has something to do with adding a hard disk.
If your hunch is true delete the old hard disk that you may have added and create a new one for your machine by following the steps closely as demonstrated at 10:55. BTW which OS are you trying?

You have just stated what I've witnessed with Windows installations. Sadly Intel just looks the the other way with HAXM improvements and bug fixes. There is no help on this one though.

Windows on Windows in QEMU is in itself a difficult choice. Look at WHPX instead of HAXM. GPU passthrough is complicated enough on Linux, maybe you have lots of time on your hands to try that on Windows. If you need GPU passthrough I would strongly suggest Linux as host with QEMU and Windows VM as guest to pass through GPU. Best of luck.

That is strange. First delete the machine from Qtemu then browse to the folder where the machine's qcow2 disk was stored and delete it. Should work as a reset.
Hi, can you make a guide on how to build qemu and qtemu from source in windows, I tried using MSYS2/MinGW and i cant get pass config as explained In the build guide. Qtemu source has new features and fixes that haven't been released yet, and the new version of qemu has opengl disabed but I've read it can be compiled to have these features enabled again.
Yes it seems complicated at first, start with baby steps. Give your brains a breather for couple of days. Come back watch as many videos as possible ... repeat
Could it be that QtEmu is very buggy? I have the same problems like others - i tried now Manjaro, Ubunto, Win 10, Win 11... changes all settings also from other videos, but QtEmu dont start at all. VT is disabled - i restarted after it, ... QtEmu just dont start after pressing the play button... i have no more ideas.. I have a 12700k, 3800Ti, 128GB DDR5 RAM but i cant get it to run.
Please enable VT in BIOS; it is required for virtualization. To confirm check on the Performance Tab of Task Manager below the CPU graphs Virtualization should read Enabled. Next follow my video closely to run Manjaro or Ubuntu at least. Forget running Windows or Mac with Intel HAXM. I've tried several times in vain, HAXM is full of bugs which Intel does not care to fix. QtEmu is old software which represents only a small fraction of the capabilities that QEMU has to offer. If you want to test the real power of QEMU learn it's command line and use WHPX for acceleration, not Intel HAXM. Hope it clears your confusion. Best of luck.

But I have spent a long time trying to install qemu and qtemu on my windows7 following your indications, and when I hit the play button in qtemu, nothing happens (i just see the stop button one second and then the play button) . Which OS are you trying to install? For win 7 I would recommend version first try the latest supported 2022-04-19, if not then 2021-12-15. Do not go for a rc release.

Greetings brother....I do not own a Ryzen so have zilch experience. Stil, if you want to run macOS on your PC, I would strongly suggest dual boot Windows and Arch Linux. Then on arch install qemu following which you can use the dhiru kholia guide to install latest macOS ventura on your machine. I have detailed the steps in this guide th-cam.com/video/_5XVYF4CwR4/w-d-xo.html . If ventura does not work go for next lower version till some macOS works. Hackintosh is headache which requires lots of time, patience, trail error and some luck to. macOS VM's are straight forward. Best of luck.

HAMX has multiple issues which Intel is in no mood to fix. To see the real error try running the same configuration VM through the Windows command line.
There are many errors, the software just just not report them to you. If you want to see them, write that same machine config on the command line using QEMU and fire up that machine.

Want you can but can you.... I doubt because HAXM has serious issues which Intel leaves unaddressed. I bet you will find yourself sweating installing Windows leave alone macOS. If you want to run macOS in VM hop on to Arch, get qemu and virt manager. I have several tutorials to guide.
Please do not waste your time trying to install Windows or macOS using Intel Haxm. If you want to try with QEMU then use WHPX accelerator on Windows. Linux is OK on Haxm.
I have a problem. 1st the intelhaxm has stopped. cannot start that services. 2nd i tried to install kali but not running. Even I followed your tutorial.
1. uninstall haxm, reboot computer, install haxm, reboot computer. 2. Some linux distros are finicky, try posting on kali forums regarding observed behavior of kali.
@@TonyAsh-rp6fp Workstation requires a subscription, for most use cases vmware player on windows will suffice. I am sure you can install Kali on vmware. Pro tip if you want to use kali with qemu use should be using whpx as the accelerator, not intel haxm
@@anouar_slh Manjaro should work alright. Must be an issue with your VM system configuration in qtemu. Windows I can vouch will NOT work; will save you hours of headache.
Try Manjaro if it goes thruough. If yes then there is something wrong in your configuration or Ubuntu ISO; if no there is something definately wrong in your configuration. Have verified you have installed HAXM correctly and that it is running as a kernel driver? Keep me posted.
I was trying to install Kali Linux, and it wouldn't open up like what you said, the problem was the wrong configuration of CPU settings, change each of those values, and rerun, see if it works, mine got fixed when I used the same CPU settings as the video.

@@vmariontop Oh my...I've tried several times and failed Windows 10,11 and macOS does not work on Intel HAXM. You might have a better chance using WHPX as your accelerator for QEMU.
HAXM has been archived by Intel and is no longer supported. Should you need to use HAXM the last QEMU version that supports HAXM is 7.2.8. So download that version of QEMU for Windows and try again. Hope it helps.
No matter how hard I try, I can not get QTEMU to start a Windows XP Machine, I have everything set up, I have the Install disc iso set up, changed boot order to be CD first, etc but everytime I click play it instantly stops, I'm at my wit's end here, I just want to play old school games that wont run on windows 10 anymore, but I'm about to give up on that dream The closest I have gotten a VM to work is by using the newest QEMU by itself but I can not for the life of me get audio to work when I use standalone QEMU 7.2 Edit: I needed to downgrade QEMU to version 7.0 to get it to run with QTEMU 2.1, currently trying to install Windows XP again, hopefully it runs as fast as QEMU 7.2 standalone but with Audio Edit 2: sound is still broken, I give up, I've been trying the past 6hrs and I cant get this damn thing to work, the closest I have gotten to sound is an annoying glitching beep after the desktop loads
Which accelerator are you using with the standalone version of QEMU? You must be aware that you have 2 options i. Intel HAXM and ii. WHPX; suit yourself. The reason I mention this is because you want to play games. I surmise you are using -device ich9-intel-hda for audio in standalone QEMU. Try -device AC97 and report back. Patience and tenacity pays off.
Hey, I'm not getting the same options for machine types. You've got different architectures, arm, mips etc.. I've got none of that. What gives? EDIT: Oh this is futile. I followed this to the letter, and when i click to start the machine it immediately goes back to stopped state. Useless.
Reinstall qemu with all options selected. I can vouch that other than Windows and macOS other platforms play nice with haxm. I have even run Androidx86 th-cam.com/video/9sHJD7FASaI/w-d-xo.html

@@itsrealplayer162 The qemu configuration in the gui is not being supported by the Intel HAXM. I found that if I remove haxm and use whpx some of my machines work. Minimal testing would be to use tcg as the accelerator. It is great to hear that you can use qemu without the gui.

@@frazchaudhry Hi, you do it while being in the grub. You select your boot entry (for example Ubuntu) and you click the E button on your keyboard. Boot edit menu will appear and you write noapic in the linux /boot/vmlinuz.... line. Yeah try messing around in that window, it might look a little bit different on your configuration, but that's exactly what worked for me. Good luck

Are you sure you set up the CPU correctly? Let's say I am on a 5800x3d. I have 8 cores and 16 threads. Wouldn't I set Cores Per Socket to 4 (half of my cores) and Threads Per Core to 8 (half of my threads)? To me, it seems like you got it the other way around? I don't, but I am confused on this part.
For your case Socket Count 1, Cores per socket 4, threads per core 2, cpu count 8, hot pluggable cpus 8 would assign half i.e 8 of your total cpu threads. Quick way is to remember to multiply cores per socket 4 by threads for core 2 i.e 4x2=8. Hope it makes sense and convinces you to cover up ;-). As they say 'clothes maketh a man'. Come on brother, why would you want to loose your religion. Best of luck.

You are absolutely correct about HAXM not working with AMD. You should use WHPX acceleration with QEMU. Look up how to install WHPX on your Windows box; then install QEMU and dabble with QEMU command line. QtEMU will not work with WHPX. If I my hands were not full and there was enough demand I could show a gui which works with WHPX. Till that time scouring the web will be your best.

I know of no precise guide available on the internet to point you to it. Additionally, there is substantial RnD to be done therefore till I lay my hands on an AMD Ryzen box.

Greetings Richard, your intel haxm installation failed to install therefore your virtual machine does not start. First step is install intel haxm correctly. If you are not following choco to install then go to intel github website and download the latest haxm release; unzip and install, reboot machine and check the query output. Keep me posted.

Thank you for your video it's very helpful, I was able to launch Debian & Ubuntu installers using qemu but unfortunately I reach a screen where it says that it cannot detect any hard drives and loads a list of drivers, does anyone know how to creat a drive? (I tried using qemu-img create with 30 GB but the file produced is around 193 kb)
The hard drive size is dynamically controlled. Starts at Kbs and fills up as the machine is added with data. That is the normal behaviour. Qtemu should detect hard drives, is it of type raw or qcow2?

Wow..Win 10 on Win 10 with Intel HAXM will not work. Win 10 on Win 10 with WHPX just might work. Usoft have designed their OS so that third party virtualization f/w cannot run Win on Win IMHO. They promote their own Hypervisor Platform. If running Win on Win is a must I would recommend Virtualbox or VMWare; otherwise QEMU is great. Hope it helps.

You are free to run any android emulator of your choice on Windows. Yes QEMU can run Android too. Your processor and motherboard should support nested virtualization and you have to pass in your cpu.

Which OS are you trying to run? Hopefully not Windows or macOS. Linux would be a safe bet. Also latest qemu has dropped support for Intel HAXM since Intel has archived HAXM. You need an older version of QEMU to use HAXM.

Yes because you have an AMD processor therefore either use TCG accelerator (which sucks big time) or use WHPX accelerator. Then you will have to use the QEMU command line since Qtemu does not have an option for WHPX. Hope it helps.

OSX is a long shot, with Intel haxm there are several issues with the Windows version of qemu that have not yet been fixed by Intel. Once those are ironed away then we can try Windows. Once that works OSX is the next logical step. If you want to run OSX then get manjaro and install qemu. Next there are detailed guides in my channel for installation of Monterey on Linux using QEMU.

Thanks for the guide. It worked perfectly for Manjaro. The only problem that I have now is that it starts only when I set socket/CPU count/cores per socket/threads per core as 1. I have 4 cores and 8 threads. It wouldn't be that much of a problem, but Fedora doesn't want to work with only one core. There is very little information about it on the internet and I can't find any solution. Please help.
You have not mentioned how many sockets you have, I presume 1. Then for your machine, set socket count as 1, cores per socket as 4, threads per core as 2, Cpu Count as 8, Maximum number of hotpluggable CPUs as 8. This is the max configuration. For lesser configs set socket count as 1, cores per socket as 2, threads per core as 2, Cpu Count as 4, Maximum number of hotpluggable CPUs as 4. Tell me if it worked.

While creating a machine, once I make it to "Machine Summary" and hit Finish. Nothing happens. No matter how many times I press Finish, it doesn't create a machine. Any solution? I believe it has something to do with adding a hard disk.
If your hunch is true delete the old hard disk that you may have added and create a new one for your machine by following the steps closely as demonstrated at 10:55. BTW which OS are you trying?

You have just stated what I've witnessed with Windows installations. Sadly Intel just looks the the other way with HAXM improvements and bug fixes. There is no help on this one though.

Windows on Windows in QEMU is in itself a difficult choice. Look at WHPX instead of HAXM. GPU passthrough is complicated enough on Linux, maybe you have lots of time on your hands to try that on Windows. If you need GPU passthrough I would strongly suggest Linux as host with QEMU and Windows VM as guest to pass through GPU. Best of luck.

That is strange. First delete the machine from Qtemu then browse to the folder where the machine's qcow2 disk was stored and delete it. Should work as a reset.
Hi, can you make a guide on how to build qemu and qtemu from source in windows, I tried using MSYS2/MinGW and i cant get pass config as explained In the build guide. Qtemu source has new features and fixes that haven't been released yet, and the new version of qemu has opengl disabed but I've read it can be compiled to have these features enabled again.

Could it be that QtEmu is very buggy? I have the same problems like others - i tried now Manjaro, Ubunto, Win 10, Win 11... changes all settings also from other videos, but QtEmu dont start at all. VT is disabled - i restarted after it, ... QtEmu just dont start after pressing the play button... i have no more ideas.. I have a 12700k, 3800Ti, 128GB DDR5 RAM but i cant get it to run.
Please enable VT in BIOS; it is required for virtualization. To confirm check on the Performance Tab of Task Manager below the CPU graphs Virtualization should read Enabled. Next follow my video closely to run Manjaro or Ubuntu at least. Forget running Windows or Mac with Intel HAXM. I've tried several times in vain, HAXM is full of bugs which Intel does not care to fix. QtEmu is old software which represents only a small fraction of the capabilities that QEMU has to offer. If you want to test the real power of QEMU learn it's command line and use WHPX for acceleration, not Intel HAXM. Hope it clears your confusion. Best of luck.

This is a fedora linux kernel problem. Use a different version of fedora which has a different linux kernel version.

Which OS are you trying to install? For win 7 I would recommend version first try the latest supported 2022-04-19, if not then 2021-12-15. Do not go for a rc release.

Greetings brother....I do not own a Ryzen so have zilch experience. Stil, if you want to run macOS on your PC, I would strongly suggest dual boot Windows and Arch Linux. Then on arch install qemu following which you can use the dhiru kholia guide to install latest macOS ventura on your machine. I have detailed the steps in this guide th-cam.com/video/_5XVYF4CwR4/w-d-xo.html . If ventura does not work go for next lower version till some macOS works. Hackintosh is headache which requires lots of time, patience, trail error and some luck to. macOS VM's are straight forward. Best of luck.

HAMX has multiple issues which Intel is in no mood to fix. To see the real error try running the same configuration VM through the Windows command line.
I have same issue, when I click "play" to start virtual machine, nothing happens, I get no errors.
There are many errors, the software just just not report them to you. If you want to see them, write that same machine config on the command line using QEMU and fire up that machine.

The QEMU conf through the command line is a critical one which I have to build myself. When I'm free I'll make a tutorial about it.

Want you can but can you.... I doubt because HAXM has serious issues which Intel leaves unaddressed. I bet you will find yourself sweating installing Windows leave alone macOS. If you want to run macOS in VM hop on to Arch, get qemu and virt manager. I have several tutorials to guide.

1. uninstall haxm, reboot computer, install haxm, reboot computer. 2. Some linux distros are finicky, try posting on kali forums regarding observed behavior of kali.

Try Manjaro if it goes thruough. If yes then there is something wrong in your configuration or Ubuntu ISO; if no there is something definately wrong in your configuration. Have verified you have installed HAXM correctly and that it is running as a kernel driver? Keep me posted.
I was trying to install Kali Linux, and it wouldn't open up like what you said, the problem was the wrong configuration of CPU settings, change each of those values, and rerun, see if it works, mine got fixed when I used the same CPU settings as the video.

My machine will not start
HAXM has been archived by Intel and is no longer supported. Should you need to use HAXM the last QEMU version that supports HAXM is 7.2.8. So download that version of QEMU for Windows and try again. Hope it helps.
@@HikmatEUstad Ive checked the qemu site and it appears 7.2.8 isnt available on windows. the closest one to 7.2.8 is 7.2.0 in the 2022 folder

@@HikmatEUstad 7.2.0 does work! with one issue tho. now qtemu doesnt work properly but running it all through manual CMDs seems to work

No matter how hard I try, I can not get QTEMU to start a Windows XP Machine, I have everything set up, I have the Install disc iso set up, changed boot order to be CD first, etc but everytime I click play it instantly stops, I'm at my wit's end here, I just want to play old school games that wont run on windows 10 anymore, but I'm about to give up on that dream
The closest I have gotten a VM to work is by using the newest QEMU by itself but I can not for the life of me get audio to work when I use standalone QEMU 7.2
Edit: I needed to downgrade QEMU to version 7.0 to get it to run with QTEMU 2.1, currently trying to install Windows XP again, hopefully it runs as fast as QEMU 7.2 standalone but with Audio
Edit 2: sound is still broken, I give up, I've been trying the past 6hrs and I cant get this damn thing to work, the closest I have gotten to sound is an annoying glitching beep after the desktop loads
Which accelerator are you using with the standalone version of QEMU? You must be aware that you have 2 options i. Intel HAXM and ii. WHPX; suit yourself. The reason I mention this is because you want to play games.
I surmise you are using -device ich9-intel-hda for audio in standalone QEMU. Try -device AC97 and report back.
Patience and tenacity pays off.
Hey, I'm not getting the same options for machine types. You've got different architectures, arm, mips etc.. I've got none of that. What gives?
EDIT: Oh this is futile. I followed this to the letter, and when i click to start the machine it immediately goes back to stopped state. Useless.
Reinstall qemu with all options selected. I can vouch that other than Windows and macOS other platforms play nice with haxm. I have even run Androidx86 th-cam.com/video/9sHJD7FASaI/w-d-xo.html
my Qtemu doesn't look like that one
Make sure you have the official version from gitlab.

For some reason , when i start the virtual machine , ( on it ) it just starts and ends instantly , it doesnt show up a error , what do i do? ( the error says , Entry Point Not Found”
Which OS are you trying to run? Is the ISO bootable?

@@wyzwaniejana336 QEMU on windows is experimental. Additionally HAXM is fragile; therefore do not raise your hopes too high. I've just gotten to run Linux, Windows crashes.

Linux VMs should work if your configuration is correct. Forget Windows and macOS

@@itsrealplayer162 The qemu configuration in the gui is not being supported by the Intel HAXM. I found that if I remove haxm and use whpx some of my machines work. Minimal testing would be to use tcg as the accelerator. It is great to hear that you can use qemu without the gui.
QtEMU is problematic. I just use terminal QEMU and things always work perfectly.
Oh, have you tried running Windows as a guest VM on a Windows host with HAXM or WHPX. Was it perfect?

im trying to use haxm but its not working i tried using haxm 7.2.0 i could not install it it says my cpu is not supported and idk why couse i was able to install the latest version of haxm
