This reaction was so much fun. I loved seeing you two start off trying to find some sort of logic or reason behind the humor and then gradually giving in to the absurdity. This is just a series of jokes loosely attached to the thinnest of stories. Just gotta go with it. Lol

22:45 The actress playing the part of “Jive Lady” (as she’s credited) is Barbara Billingsley, who played the mother in the late ‘50’s/early ‘60’s sitcom, Leave It To Beaver, a part about as far removed from a “jive-ass dude” talking character as you can get.
This was probably the first film with an after credits scene- cut to the man still in the cab at LAX, saying, “Well, I’ll give him another twenty minutes- but that’s it!” There were a few jokes sprinkled into the end credits, as well.

The woman who was thinking to herself that husband never has a second cup of cofffee... That is from a well known Tasters Choice coffee commercial from the 1970s. There are lots of little things like that that seem kind of random but were funny at the time because we had all seen the same TV shows, movies and commercials that the movie was making fun of. Basically if you see something that seems kind of like... what??? It's one of those moments that is lost in time. One of these days I need to make a video with clips from all those 70s media that they were making fun of for folks like you to watch before you watch this movie. In 1999 it was voted by film critics the funniest American movie of all time. It really was. But...

There are several gags that are based on things from long ago that you would not know about so those scenes may not make sense to you. The scene where the wife says her husband doesn't want a second cup of coffee and then he takes one and she says to herself "He never drinks a second cup at home" is a parody of an old Folger's coffee commercial from the 1960s. The scene on the beach where they get covered with water is a parody of a very famous scene from the 1953 film "From Here To Eternity" with Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr.

  • @mikejankowski6321
    @mikejankowski6321 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

What the other folks commented. Plus...
Back then you could smoke on a plane in the "smoking section". It's a strange idea to younger people but I had to live thru it.
The driving scene was a joke on the rear-projection technique used in movies. He wasn't even steering.
The Zipper speech at the end was a play on a Ronald Reagan film from the 1940s, Knute Rockne, All-American. He played George Gipp and that character had a melodramatic death. He was forever known as "The Gipper" and it even continued when he became president.
The egg bit is an old magic trick. The lamps were not to slow the plane, it was "every light you can get being poured onto the runway". I hope that illuminates the joke for you. :)
It's all just nonstop silliness, and I am glad you had such a good time with it. Great reaction!

    1. I guess I picked the wrong week to stop watching "first time reaction" Airplane clips.
    2. This movie requires more than one watch in order to catch as much as possible. Little things to look for:
Ted was in the Air Force but at the bar he's wearing a Navy Lt. Uniform.
Elaine's trombone sounds like a cornet.
One of the fish was a freshwater catfish.
A woman throws a baby into the air when the plane crashes through the window.
Captain Kramer steps out of a mirror before leaving for the airport.
The woman with the horse in bed is the creepy Captain Oveur's wife. She is also hitting on to Captain Kramer.
It's a jet but the background noise is of a prop plane.
The ambulance crashes after the plane lands.
    3. Otto/Auto pilot has his own webpage on IMDB
    4. Elaine has permission to sit on MY face.😍😋
    5. IMVHO Airplane II is good too, destination moon.

If you want to watch a good, serious airplane disaster film, I recommend watching Airport. Airport was filmed in 1970, based on a best selling book, and the movie launched the disaster film era of the 1970’s. It’s a really good film that except for the clothing and interior decor styles, holds up really well. Of course, the technology and passenger service experience compared to flying today looks pretty dated, but it’s fun to look at what airline travel used to look like. And the special effects still hold up well; the explosive decompression in the film still looks realistic today. But it was fun watching you react to this movie!

4:11 the joke about smoking or non smoking was that in 1980 smoking was still legal on most American airlines.
The two black guys were speaking jive it was a 60s/70s thing. The joke made more sense in 1980. 11:29 was in reference to a 1970s coffee commercial.
22:57 this joke was because the actress was on a 1950s sitcom called Leave it to Beaver and played a very traditional housewife, you’d really have to see the show to get why it’s funny to see her speaking jive.

You girls are so cute! Love your reactions!
This movie is a spoof on many current events of the time. (70's and 80's)
The lady thinking about how her husband didnt have a second cup of coffee at home and the little girl who likes her coffe like her men... those were making fun of a certain coffee commercial at the time. The eggs in the ladies mouth was a spoof on the popular magician trend back then. "Jive talking" was a real thing just like the show suggests, predominately with the black community. The term "Jive Talking" eventually became slang meaning someone who is purposely speaking nonsense to pull the wool over your eyes... to deceive you somehow. Or someone who is just talking BS.
The girl scouts fighting is a spoof on how aggressive those little girls were at selling their cookies door to door back then. Also, how competitive they were with each other since the scout who sold the most cookies got a prize. It lead to a lot of fighting among them. (Not physical fighting. Lol.) The Mayo Clinic is like a specialized hospital for major surgeries. So the actual "mayo" at the Mayo Clinic was a lame dad joke. When the guy said to pour light onto the runway... that dump truck was dumping lamps out onto the runway. Another lame dad joke. Lol.
Anyway, i love your reactions. Much love from 🇺🇸!

The thing about this film is a lot of the gags are making fun of old films and commercials. The 'he never asks for another coffee at home" is a direct line from a commercial. The scene on the beach with the sea weed is a riff on the beach scene in an old film "From Here To Eternity". So a lot of the gags might be lost on younger folks.

So many topical jokes in the movie where the meaning has been lost!
The guy in the cab was Howard Jarvis, one of the authors of the so-called "Jarvis-Gann initiative." It was (and is) important tax reform legislation in California. Having him waste a lot of money sitting in a taxi with the meter running was some pretty good irony.
Ethyl Merman was a well-known actress and singer. She was very recognizable at the time, and her appearance in the movie drew some pretty good laughs.
The woman who complained about her husband "never gets a second cup at home" was featured in a popular ad campaign for some brand of instant coffee. The people who cast the movie didn't know about that connection, and her lines were added later. The mind's whisper style of delivery parodied her commercials perfectly.
Security was different back then, and people were much more free to loiter around the airport.

He asked to buy a plane ticket. The salesman said: "Smoking or Non-Smoking". He replied: "Smoking", so she gave him a smoking ticket.
Through the 1980s at least, plane seats were designated as "smoking" and "non-smoking". When you bought a ticket, you were asked which one you wanted. Those were the good old days for smokers. Now, smoking on flights has been prohibited for years.

In Zucker, Abrahams, Zucker movies you have to watch them more than once. There's always something going on in the backgrounds. Even the end credits are goofy. You have to watch all the way through.

Other movies by the same directors: Naked Gun, Top Secret!, Hot Shots!, Hot Shots Part Deux!
Naked Gun is based on a short TV series by the same directors: Police Squad
An Earlier movie by them is The Kentucky Fried Movie. Less polished, but still has some laughs.

If you ever want to react to a great classic that you probably have not seen, please check out Heaven Can Wait with Warren Beatty and Julie Christie (and Charlse Grodin and James Mason and Buck Henry and Jack Warden and Dyan Cannon! It is a remake of Here Comes Mr. Jordan and was a huge hit in 1978 and made $98 million.
