The Saturn and Neo Geo cores sold me on MiSTer, so for I haven’t been disappointed with either core, even with with Saturn still being a work in progress it plays nearly everything I want to play. The Saturn absolutely needs to be preserved with real hardware aging and games unfortunately being prone to disc rot
Agree, both Saturn and Dreamcast were criminally short-lived and underrated. So thankful and grateful for MiSTer. I patched Policenauts and enjoying it now!
Once again, the work done on the Saturn core makes it VERY easy for me to recommend over software emulation at this point in time. It simply has the best compatibility with everything and it looks/sounds better than what I can get from software emulation even on beefy PC hardware. Maybe someday in the not too distant future software emulation can catch up, but until then I'll just recommend people buy a MiSTer Pi or a DE-10 if they want to experience good and relatively affordable Saturn emulation.
My biggest reason to get into MiSTer was the Saturn core so this is great, thanks for the vid and btw to everyone the 8bitdo M30 Saturn/genesis controller is on sale for Amazon prime day, it’s a great controller
That's great news! I love the Sega Saturn core via MiSTer Pi on the CRT. I can't get over how great everything looks with scanlines. I'm playing Policenauts right now (English patched) and it feels like being transported directly into the City Hunter 80's anime!!
Play Snatcher next. A little more antiquated mechanically but as good of a story. If this is Lethal Weapon: The Game then Snatcher is Blade Runner: Kojima Edition
Would you consider making a top 10 to 25, whatever you want, video of Sega Saturn games, and how well they run on this core? I'm sure many folks have asked about certain games (I have about Radiant Silvergun and Soukyugurentai) working. I think that would be a great video you could point to when folks ask.
Elevator Action Returns has slowly become one of my favorites. I discovered it through emulation years ago. I've been playing it and Battle Garrega on the Saturn core recently, trying to make it through with the limited continues.
Love that this game finally came out in the US (on Steam) Which begs the question: What are some other import Saturn titles that would be successful to english speakers?
Despite everything I said last month, I did actually end up getting a mister from mister addons. (The people over at mister addons are super nice, by the way.) So far, the Saturn core is probably my favorite. It looks really good over hdmi with the medium setting preset for interpolation. I've been keeping an eye on the nightly builds and I'm astonished by how much progress has been made on it. There are a few minor issues that are still present, but overall, it's far better than emulation. This is actually perfect because my Saturn is on its last legs and modders want to charge twice the cost of a new system to repair it. I am actually glad I got a mister.
Not sure why my comment keeps getting deleted so here it goes for the third time: I have my Mister connected to a CRT television but I noticed that Mister will automatically enable 'NearestNeighbour' video filter every time (found under the video processing menu of Mister). I have to disable it every time I turn on the Mister or switch to a different core (i.e. Saturn to PSX core). Even though I save the settings after I disable nearestneighbour, Mister will default back to nearestneightbour. I even replaced the Mister.ini file with a fresh one but the same issue persists. My understanding is that nearestneighbour filter or any sort of scaling should not be needed if you are connecting to a CRT? Have you come across this issue and how did you get around it? Secondly, Daytona USA Circuit Edition (JP version) has audio issues where the background music and sound effects don't play at all. I also found that I couldn't boot into some titles at all such as Manx TT SuperBike (using the recommended BIOS of HiSaturn v1.03). Have you had any success running those titles?
I cannot commend srg20 enough for his skill and arduous dedication to the Saturn core, but a part of me wishes it could have bonus features like what Robert did for the PlayStation and Nintendo 64 cores.
I've been playing Grandia for the first time and absolutely loving it. Pumped to update the core tomorrow and see if any of the texture popping on background is fixed.
I find my myself elongating words the way you say “Esooooterica” at work. It drives people nuts. Thank you for giving me a new tool. The only thing I saw that didn’t look right was when bro just raw dogged that explosive barrel and rubbed his face on it while it was exploding and lived. Pretty sure it doesn’t work that way in reality. Oh…you meant whether the game looked true to a real Saturn? Then yeah, looks great.
Awesome, Saturn was my first console and I have a lot of games I want to play from that console. Although I have the original hardware (saturn v2, my favorite model), there were always talks about the disc rot and how saturn discs are easily scratched (my DBZ Legends copy was a prime example), and this way we can play without any issues. Also, memory card issues + RAM cartridge + that board to have FMV videos, and hopefully a gun that makes games like Virtua Cop 1 and 2 super duper playable.

hey i had a question about the bios setup as this is my first time running the saturn core. i'm reading the github and it says the file can be boot.rom in the /games/saturn folder or cd_bios.rom in the same directory as the cd image. from my limited understanding the saturn is not region free, so how do i properly place the bios files on my mister so that it uses the right bios whether i load a game from usa or japan? am i correct to put the usa bios as boot.rom in the /games/saturn folder but then for any japanese game place a japanese bios as cd_bios.rom in each game's subfolder? because for the playstation core i was able to put several bios files in the right location and it automatically chooses the bios based on the correct region for that game. hope my questions make sense, thank you!
