    I wonder if there is being represented in passages like this a split in society between popular culture and another heritage which I'll call philosophical culture. I'm not talking about a class division; rather it is the popular culture of plays and poems and, likely, some of the mystery traditions. This popular view of the gods personifies the randomness of fate (which played a big role in Greek astrology), that human beings are playthings of heartless forces. // In contrast, philosophical culture seems to want to present the gods as pure instantiations, or sources, of virtue and ideals such as Beauty. The two views don't work well together and so there is a tension between these two groups. // Thanks for posting this.

    The impression i got was that he was saying the poets made up stories about the gods for allegory or entertainment, not really that he didnt believe in them
