Quite possibly the best combo of a band and a an anime I have ever seen. Sabaton is one of my all time favoite bands, and Gate my actually all time favorite anime. This combination, as well as the choice of song---Gods be damned, I got the shivers straight up and down the spine again.
GATE somehow reminds me of a game of Civilisation V on easy. Overrun their warriors with infantry, and bombard their cities with bombers while archers are trying to shoot them.

This really reminds me of Slade Stuart's "Salvation War" series. Similar themes: fantasy medieval world (except this time it is literally Heaven and Hell) tried to pick a fight against the modern world. Found out the hard way that spearmen in phalanxes wouldn't do jack to a motor-rifle division.

First incorrect, the roman legions use esplorers and don't start conquest with an attack, second point, this anime is the espression of japanese nationalism reborn.
You should read it again. I said the anime Empire have nothing that made Rome great although it is heavily inspired by the latter. So good try but no sauce. And yes this series have nationalistic sentiments in it but it's still a fun series and I don't think its propaganda. It's just the author's own sentiments seeping through.

Then I simply said that the initial attack as in the anime would never have been made by Romans, indeed there is a Japanese film (taken from a manga) that is really fun that better explains the view that was Roman, Thermae Romae. I understood what you wrote, I just wanted to say that the Romans did not attack as you see in that anime, I'm not a pacifist, I saw the series is full of gratuitous violence, technological disparity makes me see genocide and brutal executions by the Japanese army. In fact, it has a simple and fairly stubby plot, so there are hours of endless massacres.

The story is almost akin to a propaganda piece in how it portrays the Japanese SDF. Lots of praise and hoping to find a peaceful solution and bashing of international influence. (At least in the anime). However, aside from that it’s a pretty interesting concept and the animators and writers do a relatively good job of portraying what would happen if a modern civilization met a fantasy world head on in combat. I’d watch it just for the animation, slaughter, and other subplots but skip on the parts about international relations and trying to make peace with the empire as they seem to be pushing it in terms of believability.

Knowing Japan, and the countries that hold up Japan, some form of Imperialism would have occurred due to Japan’s general lack of natural resources. Having such an opportunity isn’t something they would squander. At the same time, the U.S. would’ve likely supported Japan’s push into the GATE if they were allowed access to the new world as well. The only main issue I could see occurring is trouble with the UN. However, The U.S. having veto powers would easily be able to overturn any intervention. If there was intervention, it most likely would’ve been in the form of Peacekeepers ensuring no war crimes were committed and The Red Cross and the he UN trying to distribute aid to those less developed towns.

not to mention , one gate means you always can make more one way or another...so even if one nation like japan secures 'thers' since they not know the 'craft' there be nothing saying the empire or other nations on the planet not would gambit if pressured to hard.. such as a nation slaughtering ther armies with impunity starting to advance on broad front ,and open more gates rather selling access to the land to strip mine it to other modern army powers to so that the 'giants' at least fought each other as much like they trampled on the natives... it be sort of analog to what various american native tribes hade to tolerate to get ''allies'' to even the scales after all.. and a clean world of magic with only medival resistance might be a tempting target... but like all old empires learned early on , its always lees hazzle to settle wilderness then it is to try and take over others lands ,the same sort of lesson mega corps also reluctanty learned its simpler to be friend with the locals and leet them have the bread crumbs then antagonice them and have the strip mining constantly being sabotaged by endless guerila war from countless small bands with no central command/authority to negotiate in ther name.. so unless one placed the story in some centurie forward future with uss having extreme energy and material shortages and zero solar system infra structure... learning how the gates are made and if they can be 'directed' I think would be a greater concern asside from obvious dual agenda to establish diplomatic relations to ward of future pointless attack atempts.. to start probing for worlds with only wilderness instead be lees hazzle in all categories ...not to mention a state like japan with limited natural resources should be fully able to garner extra material support from other un members to ensure they can 'secure' the gate for ther own and other un nations joint studies of it ,and...scouting and diplomatic forays , i mean magic asside the risk a beast capable to BBQ tanks that also could fly and that dedicated anti tank weaponry only at best could go toe to toe with and in many situation be at a disadvantage might accedently travle through the gate...or be herded into it ,or deciding the metal driving humans tasted better ..and was far more of then the local ones... ,might be one motivating factor not only to make it a joint effort to guard the gate and study it ,but also to dampen the greed of those without morals ..such as mega coperations just wanting to 'arrange' the displacement of all natives and start strip mine the world to 'support the un forces' ...since its hard to do proffits and any efficient resource extraction if things that can withstand modern weapons and melt years worth of infra structure and hardware be attracted by any 'larger' efforts to 'develop' an area ^^ ops...got a bit talkitive there i guess , sorry just nice to see another thought on it that not ended and began with ''huha huha , nationalism good ya'' or such things

Gate is funny because the Japanese defense force use are very American in their solutions, Dragons? Has it heard of sidewinders, Magic? I have a standard issue FAL, Heavily armored Knights? Ha we have mortars. It is in my opinion the most believable Magic Vs modern tech available.

well done amv the song goes well with the scenes chosen and shifts to matching scenes that go along with the lyrics. 8/10 alot of amv are garbage cause the theme of the song doesnt go well with the clips or miss aligns with the lyrics. one of the best clips ive ever seen was one where it looked like the characters in the anime were singing the song. (saw that one ages ago dunno where or anything just the coolness factor of detail)

That was explained in the show, light novel and manga: -Japan forbid anyone else from interfering with the GATE, since it is after all in the middle of Tokyo. US didn't want to endanger Japan's sovereignty so they respected tei decision pledging to only intervene if situation get's out of hand. -Also, Japan's government declared that entire world on the other side ofthe GATE 'special area of Japan'. Making it official Japanese territory, and JSDF has no problem operating inside their own borders.
To be fair, every single country in the world would do the same. It's only natural, you got attacked, you defend yourself and then you strike back. It's not like the US didn't do that more than dozen time already, in our own reality.

Even if US is Japan's ally Japan is still sovereign nation and it it says "no US army involvement" - there won't be one. The story explains that US official response was "we are to overstretched in Europe and Middle East and have no troops to spare + Japan wants to solve this themselves since it is on their land and their own citizens got killed in the initial invasion". Unofficially US is letting Japan go and "make mistakes" only for US to be called to assist them, it's much cheaper to do so than to contribute a LOT of resources for something you are not sure what it is exactly. Same for Russia and China, if GATE opened in Moscow or Peking US could also jsut sit down and be quiet if they do not want their military involvement. And no, there is no other GATE appearing. There is specific reason why in the story. I suggest that you give anime a try, if you are already that interested in why this and that.

The empire is lucky the gate didnt show up in russia in japan and usa theyll probably try negotiating but in mother russia it wont be an unwinnable war for the empire it will be extinction
+MidnightmoonRR This is taking place in the year 2010-2012 ( Light Novel was written when Bush was still in power ). JSDF has more modern equipment but across the other side they went with older weapons and equipment so that, in case of retreat, their enemies would not be on the same level. Besides, their enemy is medieval age level, even if you took World War 2 equipment you would still overrun them.
+MidnightmoonRR also the type 64 is still used by the JSDF in real life because of its quality and effectiveness (it's more powerful than the new model cuz it's a 7.62 mm while the type 90 is a 5.56 mm)
It's for the same reason that many countries still use M60 Pattons and leopard 1s instead of newer tanks. They are still in supply, and tanks are extremely expensive, so they use them as long as the can. Why send your best tanks when they face absolutely no legitimate resistance? Why not instead save the best tanks for defense?

+brewdle toaster Actually not exact parallel. Magic is real thing and you have races other than Humanity there. But yeah, Empire = ancient Rome. And it's allies are like protectorates that Rome had. But unlike our Rome the Empire of GATE has no strong opposition on continent to overrun them ( unlike Rome who had barbarians to overrun it from Asia ).
Where is all high level spellcasters, meteor storm, minderape, scry/die, necromancy, immunity to nonmagical weapoons. Modern soldiers can surely destroy all low to mid tier fantasy setting forces, but it takes one top rtier rogue or archwizard with time stop and they totaly screawed.
There's no point in comparing them unless one provide specific examples for comparison. One is fictional and the other is reality. We can make fiction however strong or weak. So unless we choose a specific example of a fictional world to compare ours to, there's no point. Additionally military prowess isn't measured simply by raw power. Even the strongest military force is limited by its logistical capability. One does not need to defeat the enemy on the field in order to win.
I'm pretty sure you are referring to something in the anime, but since I haven't seen it yet, I'm going to make a warhammer joke If I can think of a clever one anyways...

Knowing Japan, and the countries that hold up Japan, some form of Imperialism would have occurred due to Japan’s general lack of natural resources. Having such an opportunity isn’t something they would squander. At the same time, the U.S. would’ve likely supported Japan’s push into the GATE if they were allowed access to the new world as well.
The only main issue I could see occurring is trouble with the UN. However, The U.S. having veto powers would easily be able to overturn any intervention. If there was intervention, it most likely would’ve been in the form of Peacekeepers ensuring no war crimes were committed and The Red Cross and the he UN trying to distribute aid to those less developed towns.

ye that sounds like something i think to if one would try to be realistic with about the diplomatic vs military interaction in it when you basicly have a world that sure ,got wildlife and mystical powers that could make things troublesome...but nothing that endure the sort of attrition a industrial army can sustain ,or well to some point since that shows japan with how the soldiers coments on that they not have any of the newest military hardware due to how all that deepends on gps and stuff ''a bit unreal in itself i guess since any army using gps also have redundancy for if they hade to operate without it'' either case made me think its quite close to modern day so it sounds like the writter/writer made japan of the show a bit more imperial then it is...but then agen ,no culture expert so ehhh..

and in its arogance etc after centuries of no internal threath it couldet solve by simply drowning it in manpower at home it opened more then one portal..or , a few episodes into it elements in the empire that are slow learners 'expends' some sort of limited reosurce to open secondary and third portals thinking they make 'flanking' counter attacks....only instead they piss of africa and europe aswell wich considering the limited but on the ground information from japan likely decide not to fuck around but counter attack through the gates on ther teritory as soon as possible ,to start study the gates themselfs possibly causing an interesting twist of say every other member in the u.n along with japan puting the states and the other super nations an ultimatum either they stop fuck things up with the veto's wich dont make any sense to be 'special privlige' of them in the club anyway or they can be 'members' in ther own 3 man club since this sort of global concern now showed it cant be treated like 'regional' affair ,and also....this time it was a military inferior entity that opened gates...
what if it is drone and modern military protected sages of an genocidal expansionist empire next time ?
not to mention , one gate means you always can make more one way or another...so even if one nation like japan secures 'thers' since they not know the 'craft' there be nothing saying the empire or other nations on the planet not would gambit if pressured to hard.. such as a nation slaughtering ther armies with impunity starting to advance on broad front ,and open more gates rather selling access to the land to strip mine it to other modern army powers to so that the 'giants' at least fought each other as much like they trampled on the natives...

and a clean world of magic with only medival resistance might be a tempting target...
but like all old empires learned early on , its always lees hazzle to settle wilderness then it is to try and take over others lands ,the same sort of lesson mega corps also reluctanty learned its simpler to be friend with the locals and leet them have the bread crumbs then antagonice them and have the strip mining constantly being sabotaged by endless guerila war from countless small bands with no central command/authority to negotiate in ther name..
so unless one placed the story in some centurie forward future with uss having extreme energy and material shortages and zero solar system infra structure...
learning how the gates are made and if they can be 'directed' I think would be a greater concern asside from obvious dual agenda to establish diplomatic relations to ward of future pointless attack atempts..
to start probing for worlds with only wilderness instead be lees hazzle in all categories ...not to mention a state like japan with limited natural resources should be fully able to garner extra material support from other un members to ensure they can 'secure' the gate for ther own and other un nations joint studies of it ,and...scouting and diplomatic forays , i mean magic asside the risk a beast capable to BBQ tanks that also could fly and that dedicated anti tank weaponry only at best could go toe to toe with and in many situation be at a disadvantage might accedently travle through the gate...or be herded into it ,or deciding the metal driving humans tasted better ..and was far more of then the local ones... ,might be one motivating factor not only to make it a joint effort to guard the gate and study it ,but also to dampen the greed of those without morals ..such as mega coperations just wanting to 'arrange' the displacement of all natives and start strip mine the world to 'support the un forces' ...since its hard to do proffits and any efficient resource extraction if things that can withstand modern weapons and melt years worth of infra structure and hardware be attracted by any 'larger' efforts to 'develop' an area ^^

Gate is funny because the Japanese defense force use are very American in their solutions, Dragons? Has it heard of sidewinders, Magic? I have a standard issue FAL, Heavily armored Knights? Ha we have mortars. It is in my opinion the most believable Magic Vs modern tech available.

alot of amv are garbage cause the theme of the song doesnt go well with the clips or miss aligns with the lyrics. one of the best clips ive ever seen was one where it looked like the characters in the anime were singing the song. (saw that one ages ago dunno where or anything just the coolness factor of detail)

That was explained in the show, light novel and manga:
-Japan forbid anyone else from interfering with the GATE, since it is after all in the middle of Tokyo. US didn't want to endanger Japan's sovereignty so they respected tei decision pledging to only intervene if situation get's out of hand.
-Also, Japan's government declared that entire world on the other side ofthe GATE 'special area of Japan'. Making it official Japanese territory, and JSDF has no problem operating inside their own borders.

Even if US is Japan's ally Japan is still sovereign nation and it it says "no US army involvement" - there won't be one.
The story explains that US official response was "we are to overstretched in Europe and Middle East and have no troops to spare + Japan wants to solve this themselves since it is on their land and their own citizens got killed in the initial invasion".
Unofficially US is letting Japan go and "make mistakes" only for US to be called to assist them, it's much cheaper to do so than to contribute a LOT of resources for something you are not sure what it is exactly.
Same for Russia and China, if GATE opened in Moscow or Peking US could also jsut sit down and be quiet if they do not want their military involvement.
And no, there is no other GATE appearing. There is specific reason why in the story.

+MidnightmoonRR This is taking place in the year 2010-2012 ( Light Novel was written when Bush was still in power ). JSDF has more modern equipment but across the other side they went with older weapons and equipment so that, in case of retreat, their enemies would not be on the same level.
Besides, their enemy is medieval age level, even if you took World War 2 equipment you would still overrun them.

Hell, you could take their entire country with one Abrams.
It's for the same reason that many countries still use M60 Pattons and leopard 1s instead of newer tanks. They are still in supply, and tanks are extremely expensive, so they use them as long as the can. Why send your best tanks when they face absolutely no legitimate resistance? Why not instead save the best tanks for defense?

Where is all high level spellcasters, meteor storm, minderape, scry/die, necromancy, immunity to nonmagical weapoons. Modern soldiers can surely destroy all low to mid tier fantasy setting forces, but it takes one top rtier rogue or archwizard with time stop and they totaly screawed.
There's no point in comparing them unless one provide specific examples for comparison. One is fictional and the other is reality. We can make fiction however strong or weak. So unless we choose a specific example of a fictional world to compare ours to, there's no point. Additionally military prowess isn't measured simply by raw power. Even the strongest military force is limited by its logistical capability. One does not need to defeat the enemy on the field in order to win.
