There's probably more than a hundred videos showing how to sharpen a chainsaw but none instructs where to apply the pressure with the file. You make it perfectly clear and I thank you.
As a former instructor may I humbly offer a suggestion: When you overlay a voice instruction with instrumental music, it can detract from a technical discussion. The growing tendency is to entertain while supplying information. This results in a division of attention-something is going to dominate..what your saying..or the music..and many people will alternate trying to capture 100% of both(which they cannot) and fail to receive the max from your video which is interesting.
This^, They also could have used a 2 channel compressor to ensure that the music never interfered with the volume of the speaker. It becomes more obvious when the female speaker is talking because the music overlay is very close to the natural pitch of her voice.
Thanks Flickchaser for your very tactful comment. I will usually quickly leave any video that does this background music thing. I really wanted to hear this excellent instruction so I struggled through it. While I’m very, very appreciative of the video’s content; it was honestly a huge struggle to watch.
Because people today have an attention span of a gnat. They have to be entertained with constant sight and sound. If it were only voice, only the oldest 15% of users would get it.
I work with a couple of British people, and I always get a kick with them when anyone points out THEIR English accent....HELLO, the language IS from England!! Yeah, this girl is, well, a west coast girl...accents won't ever be her strong suit!!
Good lord, it took 3 full minutes of blather to finally get to the chainsaw blade sharpening. "When you use your chainsaw, it's gonna get dull". Gee, thanks. I did not know that.
I do commercial video production for a living. This video did give me some good tips for sharpening my own chain, but please hire a professional like me to do your next how to video. Seriously, I travel all over the country and do this for a living. I work for a long list of well known outdoor brands such as: Carhartt, Bass Pro, Nikon, Bushnell, Remington......and would love to do work for Stihl. Plus as a property owner, all of my small equipment is Stihl and I love the brand!

That is good information to know when getting ready to sharpen a chain. For about a year, I was purchasing new chains when the one on the saw was dull. I learned to sharpen my chains and have been keeping them sharp since then. I have a Stihl MS-250 saw which I purchased new to take the place of my cheaper Poulan saw which had given me great service. The new Stihl have not been of use to me since owning it and it has been to the repair shop many times, and it still don't start for me. The old saw I have works almost all the time so I have gone back to it until I just purchased a new Poulan Pro, which I have not used yet.
I found this video most informative, as new owner of a chainsaw. The detail was very good and easy to understand, I think using a large model of one of the links is very useful, thank you.
if you drag the file backwards it dulls the tooth. how does it do that? just because its the reverse movement of sharpening it must have the opposite effect?
Mr Pete thats assuming that the file is out of the box sharp but if its used it curls the edge anyway. i literally carefully break the curl of downwards on every tooth to preserve the chrome alloy plating on top. to prevent the curl one would have to use a much bigger file or polish the tooth which is illegal in some countrys. i get the feeling i think too much about it. so whatever i guess.
There is very helpful information here, but I agree with others' comments that the background music, marketing ads, and superfluous information (not to mention Jen, the attractive spokes-lady planted for the predominantly male audience) are extremely distracting!
Stihl sells a 2-in-1 shapener with pictures for instructions. It shows a 30 shave which I get, no problem. It also shows a 90 file shave and I don't understand this. I thought the video was annoying because of all the flippancy. Not a very good instructional video. Moreover, it did not show the use of this expensive file tool I bought (40€+)
The only thing I question is way would you recommend making each tooth the same? In my world that is misinformation. If each tooth is cutting the same thickness chip life is good.
Greetings from planet earth. Not sure about your world, but here on planet earth the rest of us know that if each tooth isn't the same length it isn't going to cut the same thickness chip. The teeth rake back so different length teeth will be different heights with respect the bar. At its worst, the chain will chatter and cut like crap.
My new stihl saw will never need sharpening!!!! Since my new chainsaw will not start, the chain will never get dull! I have owned many chainsaws, My first Stihl is the only saw I have owned that failed to start. spending more money doesn't mean you are getting a better saw. Save your money, buyer beware~!!!!
Confusing in that you keep changing perspectives of the teeth, e.g., you show drawings then show the teeth upside down from the drawing. One needs to replay constantly to figure it out.
Thankyou informative video please loose the music it makes it that much harder to hear comments and doesn't mix well with my extreme tinnitus sorry for bitching but that's just the truth of it 😅 cheers 🍻
All this safety nonsense in the USA is really over dramatic. I mean just look at the size of the gloves in this video. They're huge! I've been sharpening tools for 45 years and I've never needed gloves. What do you really think is going to happen if you slip? Maybe you should all where Kevlar vests just in case you trip up and FALL on the blade.
@@vaughnburrows With a marketing budget like Stihl should have, they can hire someone like me that can produce a professional video. Everything from lighting to audio levels not set correctly is wrong, and of course that terrible music!! I can tell this was shot by someone outside of Stihl that tried but is clearly not up to par to represent the company. They are using microphones(levels set too high) and lights which tells me it was not shot by the people that "make power tools". I do commercial video production for a living but I came here to get tips on sharpening my own saw chain. As painful as the video was to watch, I did learn what I came here to learn.
@@diversedad7954 I'm thinking they were trying to get a point across without taking too much money out of their own pockets, as long as they don't cut those same corners on their equipment I'm personally ok with it.
+Carlyle Lochan OK, there is a place for both. I for one want the technical information. One resource for you is your Stihl Servicing Dealer. He can help a great deal with your questions and mechanical needs.
All that fluff, and they showed 1 or 2 *seconds* of what I wanted to see, and even then, not very well. I use the exact same depth gauge as the one he had, but for some reason when I lay it down along the chain (so it is bridging about 3 or 4 teeth), the height of all those teeth prevents it from sitting low enough on the depth gauge that I'm concentrating on, so there is nothing to file off even though it really does need to be lower. WTF?
When I put my round file in the tooth it don't mate up with the groove already there it rest on the top and bottom if I file it it will have to remove metal before it gets to the groove. New saw new 2 in 1 sharpener both .325
That's not when you replace a chain. You need to send them to me long before that. Then I make things with them. Come one Stihl, send me the defects. I'll send you something nice made out of some.
Distracting "background" music, displayed sharpening tools that weren't even demonstrated & that soft0floppy way the 3 presenters bounce off each other, made this the least informative Stihl video I've seen to date. Clear, concise & to the point is what's needed. Sadly, this wasn't it. Fingers crossed for next time.

Hi, can you change the cutting angle from normal to a full chisel cheers.
hmm, don't a vise, don't have the guides, just the round file that came with my Farm Boss.
Can I touch up the blade by hand?
you can. there are some other vids on youtube to show you how to do this.
You can check youre own raker with a depth gauge, personally, I use a yard stick.
Music is annoying.
totally worth it
if you drag the file backwards it dulls the tooth. how does it do that? just because its the reverse movement of sharpening it must have the opposite effect?
If you drag the file backwards, you're pulling back on the thin/sharp edge of the tooth, causing it to curl a tiny bit.
Mr Pete
thats assuming that the file is out of the box sharp but if its used it curls the edge anyway. i literally carefully break the curl of downwards on every tooth to preserve the chrome alloy plating on top. to prevent the curl one would have to use a much bigger file or polish the tooth which is illegal in some countrys. i get the feeling i think too much about it. so whatever i guess.
Mr Pete its funny you mention that, because on another stihl video, they show the rolling sharpener and they file both directions, which seems wrong.

Some hardware stores will not sale parts or order them, the reason I went to echo now
at 8:30 it says to adjust the angle but no example is given
Very informative video with some good shots showing the methods.
Thank you so much….gorgeous lady

Cheesy as cheddar
Jen is welcome to check the length of my raker anytime
+Hsqu man She is so beautiful. I'd likely cut my fingers on the saw if she was close by.

ignore the first 1:44 minutes, it's all ADDS and MARKETING.. they don't start discussing the actual chainsaw until 1:44 into the video!!!
Please take on board some of the comments about annoying, repetitive background music

10/10 good stuff
I think they should increase the audio level a little bit, the background music is not saturated enough...
My brand new sthil chain must be dull right out of the box according to the wood chips
The only thing I question is way would you recommend making each tooth the same? In my world that is misinformation. If each tooth is cutting the same thickness chip life is good.
