    Gotta love Unicron's introduction. He comes in from between two stars and eats a planet, and at this point we have absolutely no idea exactly WHAT Unicron is. A robot? A planet? Some kind of space station? It's only later when he converses with Megatron that we find out that Unicron is actually a sentinent character, and only at the end do we realize that he's actually a giant planet-size Transformer!

    @LoneStag-wg3ne 5 ปีที่แล้ว +470

    There is something about this scene that I've always found so incredibly unnerving. It coincides with the idea that our own universe is so large so unexplored and unknown, as well along with the fact that anything out there could reduce any evidence of our own existence down to zero in an instant. The universe is so expansive and beautiful yet at the same time terrifying, there are so many thing in our own galaxy and in the bigger unseen universe that pose such a great threat to use and we would be hopeless to stop, just like the people of Lithone we would be completely oblivious to the danger until we unexpectedly find it sitting outside our front door, and would have little no time what so ever to escape it. Seeing as how things on this scale do happen out there, its unsettling possible this scene has yet to find us and we may not know it until comes without warning.

    • @gc3k
      @gc3k 4 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      A black hole could pop up tomorrow and devour every last atom of Earth, and that wouldn't change the fact that Earth has existed for billions of years, largely without being disturbed by asteroids or other outside dangers. Those are pretty good odds, relative to the lifespan of Earth's inhabitants over the years centuries millennia etc. But that only accounts for forces of nature, instead of intelligent life, like I don't know, a mechanized planet-eating behemoth

Even in Transformers, it basically takes a miracle to stop Unicron every time he shows up in the franchise, and we have nowhere near the level of technology the cybertronians do, so we'd be completely helpless if some giant planet eating machine made by an alien race suddenly showed up at our doorstep.

    This scene made everyone in the theater, kids and adults alike turn to each other and say 'whoa'.. but still had smiles on our faces because this was awesome. It left an impression, but not terrifying, just impressive. Also, looking back, the music makes the scene. Well done.

    The only thing that we know of to ever escape Unicron's gravity while he is feeding. :(
    Also, people keep wondering why Unicron is never seen or otherwise detected by the inhabitants of a planet/moon/etc. until it is too late. To me, the answer is simple: Unicron moves _that_ fast, at least when he's "on the hunt".
    Note how quickly Unicron passes by those suns. You have to be moving pretty damn fast just to fight through their combined gravitational pull alone without any effect whatsoever. That's easily faster than any ship or anything else we see in the series. By the time he moves close enough for the inhabitants of his target to see him, there's nothing they can do about it. Unicron likely only slows down just enough to engage/devour his prey.

    • @adamxue6096
      @adamxue6096 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Considering how Transformers have shown the capability of traveling past the light speed limit.
      Yeah, those two suns were GIGANTIC, they would have such an intense gravitational pull it would be unimaginable.
      I think Unicron does accelerate past Light speed, not gonna even try to go in on the science on that because it is literally impossible.
      But he needs to slow down before coming to his destination...
      Other wise the force will be enough to just literally crush him and the planet or anything he hits.
      It is also possible that Unicron does have anti-detection through electromagnetic means.
      I would bet that he has, as others seemingly is unable to know where he is most of the time.
      I mean if you know a gigantic planet eater is searching for snacks, you would try to know where he is 24/7.
      Either he moves so fast and jumps so much that he is unable to be tracked, or he has the worlds best camouflage system that only he will turn off when he starts feeding, and doesn't need to hide anymore.
      Considering that Transformers did damage him quite a bit when he transformed and the fight actually went on a while, yeah, Unicron will have a bad time if he comes in and they are all prepared, either leaving him an empty planet or ain't going down without a complete assault.
      Which, sure, he can deal with most, if not all of the planets. But the damage can stack on quite heavily, and Unicron is smart enough to avoid that.
      Until he got to Cybertron, which he really felt like torturing.

    • @chrissonofpear3657
      @chrissonofpear3657 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's certainly impossible to accelerate that fast without warping space.
      I don't think even a handy aether theory's gonna help there...

    • @Deined
      @Deined 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Nah, Unicron definitely not going at light speed; he would've otherwise passed those suns in much less than the blink of an eye.
      It's safe to assume, though, that he's doing a _hell_ of a lot of Machs in speed, though. That's easily fast enough to approach a planetoid without being seen until the end.

    • @adamxue6096
      @adamxue6096 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Deined
      Well, if he were going at light speed he would blitz pass these suns very quickly.
      (But, that said, we don't know how fast he is moving exactly. But take note that even just between venus and earth(Calculated with a medium number) is about 2 light minutes, meaning that is how much time light takes to traverse through the distance.)
      (He could very well be still scarily close to the speed of light(Scarily, as in, any speed higher than 1% of speed of light.))
      But I assume that he has already "slowed down" at that point.
      You see, since slowing down does take time and probably fine adjusting is needed(Because planets move, duh, on a solar system scale you can miss a planet you want really easily if you come at it wrong.), it is safe to assume that Unicron most likely was slowing down when he approaches them.
      Also, no, just approaching a planetoid with a shit ton of machs isn't gonna do the trick.
      You see, light travels at the speed of light, and so unicron can be observed with... not even the best astronomic equipments that these civilizations can get their hands on.
      Now ofc, it wouldn't be so hard to be prepared for Unicron if you can observe him.
      But you can't, at least, those people show that unicron seems to just pop in and out of existence, eat a planet, and is nowhere to be found.
      Which is odd, because even earths technology today have potential to discover and trace him, it would be a bit pushy for earth to do something like that since Unicron doesn't emit a lot of light, but the chaos he brings would definitely be observable.
      Now, even with the lag between unicrons light reaching the planets, and how much unicron moves in between those, you can fairly easily get a general idea of where he is heading.
      And if you see him on a course that is towards you... well either evacuate or fight to the death.
      But these people seem so unprepared, as if they knew he existed but never expected him to be there.
      That means he has ways of by passing pretty much all detection.
      Which implicate that he has some ways of dodging all of those.
      Either, his systems are so ridiculously powerful, he can camouflage(Do note as well that he can't just send out random signals, he must actually hide himself from either shining out light or emitting certain wavelengths)
      Or... he can travel at, or, actually, more than the speed of light.
      Either literally, or by means of teleport eg generating a worm hole etc.
      Now why I think he does...
      First of all, he was nearly completely capable of knowing what happened on Earth, like immediately after it happened, able to detect the autobots on the planet of junk.
      And transformers have developed the technology of space bridge, which is, teleportation.
      Which means that Unicron might eat a planet, accelerate and teleport to another location.
      This means tracking him efficiently would be impossible.
      I do not think he can physically accelerate through the speed of light.
      Simply because... Damn, physics...
      Also as an observation point of view.
      When you move faster than speed of light, well... it isn't what you would think as in you would never appear in front of peoples eyes.
      No, but for them, causation and result seems to be screwed up.
      It is as if I drank the coffee first and then filled it up with coffee.
      It is like watching a video backwards, this can be easily proven by drawing tachyons on a space time diagram.
      You realizes that for some observers, he would be everywhere, at the same time, and for the rest, causation would be fvcked.
      But ofc this isn't shown, and because teleportation seems to be a technology that they do possess, I think it is safe to assume that Unicron has some sort of ability to warp through space and time to another location.

    He doesn't have a genuine all-consuming hunger. He's not a force of nature. He has no real need to destroy a planet.
    He even has faster methods of doing so, he just doesn't use them.
    He does this, because he is genuinely offended by the mere existence of reality, and wants to destroy everything as slowly and painfully as possible.

      Unicron as a whole is a "Multiversal singularity"
      Until some guy (Namely Nexus Prime) made that not exactly true anymore.
      But he was actually a force of nature, he exist to destroy, he exist to eat away the planets.
      The dude creating Unicron in the G1 Universe is simply a way of implementing him into the universe.
      But now the creature does hold the title of G1 Unicron creator as of now, since Nexus Prime decided to fvck with everyone and destroyed Multiversal Singularity the concept itself.
      This allowed for different Unicrons that isn't actually avatars, and more like a fragment of the whole thing.
      Which actually made the possibility of "Shattered glass" Unicron.
      Who was a GOOD GUY, and turned the evil Optimus Prime into Nova Prime to actually do good things.
      However it is not really sure if Primus is effected by Nexus Prime, as Primus seems to origin from something bigger than the multiverse.
      This made different continuities a reality, and these doesn't effect each other anymore.

    It would be great if they remade this movie. One day, Lithonians go about their lives in peace and happiness. Then astronomers and scientists monitoring the skies deliver the devastating news to the world governments. With less than a day left, the governments are unable to keep the extinction level event a secret. The alarms begin to sound off, and the world becomes silent as it contemplates its fate. Unicron's shadow blots out the light from the neighboring star. The planet erupts into chaos as the Lithone's citizens fight their way to the desperately-constructed escape ships. Unicron's horns pierce the atmosphere, scorching the surface of the planet. Historic cities are pulverized as Unicron's horns crash into the planet to begin his feast. Just a few ships carrying Lithone's only remnants of its existence manage to escape Unicron's gravitational pull. As all traces of life and activity fade from the planet, Unicron is glowing with replenishment, as it prepares to seek out its next planet to devour.
    Imagine all that with the latest animation and cg!

      The scene is already too classic as is, remaking this movie is totally unnecessary. The hand-painted cell animation in this film already suits it perfectly, modern animation and CGI wouldn't be as good.

    What? 35 years now? 35 years I've been watching this scene. Back when I would rent the VHS from basically any video store that had it; because if you're an 80s kid you *know* finding Transformers the Movie on the shelf was damn near impossible, I would constantly rewind this scene. 35 years. There's beautiful science that I think it was my first experience with. Nebula, a Binary star system, a blue and a red star, massive solar prominences. Then Unicron, serenely passing between them. With genuinely spectacular and haunting theme music. I love the details on Unicron, the way his hull? Skin? He's a planet sized Transformer and appears to have polar ice caps. Or would they be continents? A gold ring of an equator. Planetary rings that are basically his battery charge indicator. Then the happy every day lives of the Lithonians. Then a very hungry Armageddon bears down on them. Then he eats, digests, and glows. Satisfied with his meal.
    There was more that struck me about Unicron. Star Trek's the Planet Killer (believe it or not, I hadn't seen Star Wars by the time this movie came out). The way Unicron's maw produces a column of light when he speaks reminded me of Light Hope in She-Ra, which I also loved, which granted even more of an otherworldly godly feel to him. And of course Orson Welles voice.
    But this scene. In 2:26 seconds, they showed what a Transformer deity looks like. And why you should fear the evil one. And it has STUCK for decades.
