As a Aircraft Mechanic I have tried out the seat cushions in water, once water logged it may barely keep your head out of the water but it will definitely help.
And a couple more tips from someone that has taken aircraft cabins apart many times. The air from the air vent may be somewhat filtered but the hoses that the air passes through do not get cleaned and are very dirty inside, I always turn mine off. Also the potable water tanks that are used for your tea and coffee, are not cleaned very often. I choose to only have a drink from something that was bottled. The great cup of coffee can wait till I'm at my destination.

Note that a direct flight does NOT mean it won't make a stop or two. Direct just means you will not change planes at any of its stops. This is a very common misconception. If you want to only take off and land once, choose a nonstop flight.

    • @jamiesmiles8312
      @jamiesmiles8312 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +47

THIS needs to be pinned because I (as someone who has never flown, but plan to one day) thought that a "direct" flight meant I was going "directly" to my destination. I would have never thought that it would stop somewhere in between, even if I didn't have to deboard. I, personally, want to take a "nonstop" flight and didn't even know there was a difference until I saw your post. The wording is very deceptive (if, like me, one has not flown before). Thanks!!

Having survived a plane crash-landing in water with my small kiddos, I always check to make sure there are life jackets and an infant life preserver on board (and that I know where to locate it). It’s always wise to listen to the flight attendants’s safety briefing on every flight.

OK you wanted some comments…..former charter jet pilot here.
Never ever use the blankets….they are hardly ever cleaned at all.
    Always have your seatbelt on.
While the back of the aircraft is probably the safest place to be in the event of a crash, I t’s probably a better idea to be able to get out of the airplane quickly. For that reason, I typically sit over the wing next to the emergency wing exit, because I know how to open the thing, I’ll be the first one out, and I’ll be able to assist others.
The modern lavatory on your typical jet aircraft is not large enough for the mile high club, so don’t even try.
Be really nice to the flight attendants. They have a tough job.
Try to chill out….nobody wants to have to duct tape you to your seat.
    HTH.

Yes, I always wear my seatbelt when seated. I bring my own wipes to wipe things down when I board. I bring my own travel blanket, which I wash after my flight. One tip I haven’t heard mentioned, which I learned the hard way, is don’t wear pants that don’t gather at the ankle. Loose bottom or wide bottom pants will end up touching the floor if you sit or squat to use the toilet. I travel with a small cross body bag that I pull out of my carry-on and wear during the flight. I keep the essentials of phone, ID, hand sanitizer, hand lotion, tissue, and lip balm so I don’t have to keep pulling my bag out from under the seat. You are welcome. 😊

Yes, I have always tended to keep my belt buckled throughout the flight and my vent open. And I also tend to look for a seat behind the wings - there’s always a rush off when you arrive but if I can spend an extra 15 minutes reading in peace, it’s a bonus for me and usually not that much of a delay by the time I get through passport control etc. Generally there is a far higher chance of an empty seat beside me doing that too. So being the safest seats onboard is just another reason to choose that far back.

More than likely, there will be more space for me, and my stuff in the overhead bin.
in addition to that, the food cart / nutrtition is generally sitting stable there for easy access if I ask.
of course, I would be the very last off the Airplane, but I don't mind.
we have to wait for the Lines at Customs / Immigration anyways so why bother?

Hi, Megan. Your videos are always super helpful. These are my observations from flying since 2020. (1) I wear a mask whenever i am in public, especially on planes. I am 67 years old, have done a lot of flying over the past 40-odd years, and almost always got an upper respiratory infection (a couple of times going lower and ending up as pneumonia) every time i flew. Since starting to wear a mask, i have not gotten one of these miserable illnesses. (2) I just can’t tolerate running through airports to try to make connections any more. Often there is no option but a flight that gives you less than an hour of connection time. After my last experience, i will fly only nonstops unless it’s an absolute emergency. (3) People really do smoke in restrooms, especially on Amtrak. I’ve just been diagnosed with asthma, that I’ve probably had for decades but never had the right language to get a doctor’s attention. Any kind of smoke is a killer for me. Back in the 1980’s, when there were still smoking sections on planes, if i were seated in or near the last row of nonsmoking, i was in torment for the whole flight, breathing through layers of Kleenex or scarves. I am grateful that, at least on planes, my chance of exposure to smoke is much lower than anywhere else outside of my home. (4) There are all kinds of germs on those surfaces you mention, so i appreciate your suggestions for avoiding them. (5) I do indeed always keep my seatbelt on, as you do!
    Thanks so much.

I have been well aware that the middle seat at the back of the plane if likely the safest seat in case of accident. This was due to a person who was having a major psychological reaction to being in a seat that was very enclosed. I ended up sitting between a very attractive model and an interesting man who didn't mind talking. I have found that having good conversations can pass the time on a flight and make it seem to pass quickly.

The chances of a plane crash are way lower than the risk of you dying in a car crash in the way to an airport. When you factor that in, the seat you choose is - frankly - negligible. Better by far to choose a comfortable or convenient flight IMHO.

Sometimes the lavatories (or other passengers) smell awful and if you’re seated by them it can make you nauseous and ruin your flight. A dab of Vicks will mute that smell. I trade the minimal "safety" of the back seat( what seat is safe from 35,000 feet?) for the more usable middle near the wings seat that gives a slightly better ride as that is the most stable part of the aircraft. The air flow I hardly use due to cleaning issues. But when I do its always directed away from me similar to the air curtain you have at some stores. Maintenance of commercial aircraft is pathetic, compared to what we had to do each day for our aircraft to even takeoff.

My feet swell so badly and press against my shoes, not only uncomfortable in the flight but for about 2 days after, so I wear bedroom slippers. Something about the 'water' on the bathroom floor - you're going to track it either on shoes or socks, the only thing is, when you step in it with socks, you know about it. I think one of the most important issues is to have fastened your seat belt all the time. It has not to be extremely tightly, but in a way where you are not kicked out of your seat in case of severe air turbulences. In former times when I was younger, I flew quite a bit around the world and experienced sometimes awful turbulences where things were flying all around. This is very scary. Calming and instructing words of the crew may be very helpful in these situations. This, however, was not always the case. Heinz, 64, GER

I am about 100 pounds overweight. When I first board the aircraft, I show my boarding pass, with my seat assignment, to the flight attendant and request a seatbelt extender. On some aircraft the seatbelts can buckle, on others I need those extra inches. The attendants use the extenders for the preflight safety demonstration, (where they fasten the seatbelt). After the flight, I return the extender to the flight attendant as I exit the plane, so they don't have to go looking for it.
Also, I am one of those who keep my seatbelt fastened, just in case. No that I think about it.., maybe I should carry my own "sippy" cup, to prevent spills during turbulence.

On a safety note I've never been overly concerned with seat belts. They ain't going to save you if the plane goes down. At least until about 3 weeks ago. I was in Bangkoks Suvarnabhumi Airport when the Philippines London flight made its emergency landing. 1 fatality multiple injury. Turbulence had suddenly dropped the plane smashing anyone not belted in into the ceiling. To make matters worse they were serving breakfast, boiling water heavy carts smashing around. It got a lot of local coverage. Certainly belted up on the way home. A lesson more effective than the hundreds of safety videos I watched over the last 30 years.
