Burlingame: A Hidden Gem

  • Burlingame is a neighborhood in the San Francisco peninsula that has miles of shoreline and near perfect weather. It hugs the widest part of the San Francisco Bay. Both sunrises and sunsets can be seen here over the water. This neighborhood of 31,000 is truly a hidden gem.
A blanket of clouds usually coats the surrounding mountains, which cools the area. This is especially true for the western half of San Francisco, where it’s pretty cold and cloudy throughout the summer. Burlingame is located just south of where the clouds break and just north of where the summers get hot. It’s a climate sweet spot. Not a single month in Burlingame has an average temperature above 72 degrees. Cool, misty mornings are cleared and warmed as the sun rises. Throughout most of the year afternoon temperatures are in the 70s. When the sun falls the temperature drops. Evenings are crisp and pleasant, even during the peak of summer.
Burlingame is a 10 minute drive to the San Francisco airport. You can watch the planes land over the Bay. There’s no humidity here, so there’s barely any bugs. It has easy access to city life, to silicon valley, the Pacific Ocean, the ancient redwood forests. The thing about spending time in Burlingame is, you just don’t really want to go anywhere else.

Im from Brazil. I was an exchange student in Burlingame High School (go panthers) back in 2001. I am forever greatful for that experience. I had the most amazing host family. Thanks BHS and thanks Studebaker family. Love from my hometown in Brazil.

Great video! I have friends around the world and occasionally I like to share with them what it is like where I live. The biggest downside of Burlingame is housing cost. I was fortunate to buy many years ago and even then, my family from a not inexpensive city out of state were shocked at how much my place cost. Other than that, it's pretty perfect.
I have a running joke with my brother that I can be as provincial as I want as San Francisco/ other businesses will come to town and I don't have to go to them. Case in point: right after, my Portland friends took me to Salt & Straw, one opened up in town. I just learned I don't have to make the trip to San Mateo anymore for Backhaus bread. (I'd been trying to lure Rustic Bakery down from Marin county.) And we have Pizzeria Delfina and Philz as well.
For the comment below about racism, I had one experience more than 15 years ago: I was visiting a friend and an older lady would not let me park on the PUBLIC street in front of her house. I ignored her and just parked anyway. But that's it. The town - although it might not seem like it - is about 30% Asian-American/ 15% Latino/a and there is a higher % of mixed-race couples/ children than most cities. It reflects the Bay area's general population and vibe.

i definitely always thought that burlingame and surrounding areas must have the best weather in the world for my taste. never too hot (most important part), not too cold like northern states or too humid like the south US. SF seems too cold in summer while san jose and inland its too hot. even san diego beach communities cant compare.

Hi Nate. I was wondering if I could use a few clips of Burlingame from your lovely video for a background on a website I am putting together for a local political campaign.

Burlingame was created as a private country club for San Francisco millionaires in the 19th Century. As inflation goes its now mostly only for multi millionaires and billionaires. But enjoy the dream.

If you want a little starter home. If you want a decent house look closer to 5 to 7,000,000
