The fact that you’re walking below sea level around the edge of the world’s biggest man made island is awe inspiring, not boring.

The cap. I bought a woolen cap (Dutch: muts) for my 90 yo mother in fancy girly colors with a pompon as a replacement for the boring high-tech she had. Did not really look into it when I bought it. Turns out it has an inside lining rim of sheep skin that covers the ears and in the frequently windy Dutch weather that is really very useful.

    • @LetsMeetAbroad

Haha yes, the muts are a life saver.

I loved this video! 40 kilometers flat terrain or not is "work". By the end of the video I could feel the exhaustion that you were feeling. I so look forwards to that day when I can travel again to your beautiful country and once again walk through the countless cobble stoned narrow streets in quaint little towns, cities and villages.

You guys do great videos. I just started watching you. Great footage and editing. My wife and I walked 6 Caminos in Spain and Portugal, so I can relate to what you're going through. Though 40K days would be an exception for us. Usually we walked 25-30 Km. We used to train weeks ahead of our caminos walks. I think you guys might like to walk a Camino de Santiago.
I love your travel videos, they are well done. There is so many bad travel videos out there, so yours are a breath of fresh air. We make travel videos as well, but not vlogs like you do, I couldn't do that, they are more like slideshows with beautiful pictures, but no commentary. You are very talented. Would you share what gear you are using especially on the production side, like software and hardware. I am due for a computer upgrade. I use PT AV Studio to do most of the slide show and DaVinci Resolve to process the videos as well as the Adobe products to edit the pictures. Davinci is running rather slow on my current computer and that's in 1080p. I use Windows, but would consider switching over to the dark side if that works better. Recently I am getting the background music from the TH-cam library, but I am not so crazy about that. Any suggestions? We are in the process of moving from the US to Portugal/Spain and I need to switch over to a laptop. We just got back from Panama and Colombia and I am working on those videos now. Recently finished Equador and Iceland. I'll be traveling to the NL on the 16th of April, I'll be mostly in Limburg, but perhaps we can compare notes???

      Thanks Martin,
Yes, 40km was long. We were super sore the next day.
We usually edit our videos on davinci resolve, it works great on the new M1 Mac books/Mac book pros. They have a dedicated version for the M1s. We recently switched from windows pc to a M1 Mac book pro. Now we have more flexibility and can edit from wherever we want.

@@LetsMeetAbroad I recognize the (sore) feeling. Good tip about your hardware. Thinking about getting a MacBook. I also use davinci for the video parts of my publication. What is your source of music?

Long distance walks in this flat country are best done in a constant and relatively fast march tempo. The challenge is to maintain speed and just go on. That speed will also keep you warm. Never stop before you are halfway, but say at 60% and then maybe another stop at 85%. At these long distances, make sure you have something like a camel back beverage supply. What you actually are testing is your blister resistance for ling distance hikes in relation with the fit of your shoes and the quality of your socks. You really need to repeat this a lot to get thicker skin under and around your feet that is well attached to the underlying tissue (because when it comes loose that becomes a bloody blister).
The best approach is not to start with 40 km but much less, say 10, repeat that and over a couple months add 5 or 10 every couple weeks.
As to hikes in Nepal, the Dutch completely flat geology at sea level does not prepare you for long hikes at Nepal altitude. At all. Maybe there's a very tall office building in your daily life where you can walk the stairs up to, say, 100 m high a couple times per week. What is much harder than climbing long distance, is a long descent, so in the example of such a building, after you do not get tired anymore from walking up the 100 m, try to walk it down. These 100 m may not seem like much but compare to a long hike with a several hundred height meters difference. In the mountains, like the Alps, the best approach is not the flat country march tempo but a rather slower one - an old Swiss man taught me "if you go slow, you go good and if you go good then you go fast" as I was walking too fast to his liking and he was right, especially in the descent.
In training, next you may want to try e.g. the Mont Blanc hike again as exercise / preparation for Nepal, after a couple days acclimatization and hikes at, say, 1000 then 2000m. And, in building strength, start with very lightweight backpacks too. In general up to between 2500 m and 3500 m altitude people do not suffer from altitude sickness (oxygen deficiency), but above certainly need a cautious approach.
Also note that some of us have sprinter genes and others marathon genes. Which one you are can easily be seen in your anatomy and it is clear that Myra has the endurance genes, not the sprinter's, when Adi is more on the sprinter's end of the scale and so needs a lot of training to build endurance capacity and reserve.
As the Nijmeegse Vierdaagse got mention, it would be a good idea to see if you can learn from people who have frequently done that.

As you probably discovered, the hardest part of long distance walking is not physical, but mental. It gets so boring. I usually listen to a book with headphones on my phone and that makes it tolerable. In your case, since you're vlogging, that doesn't make for a great proposition. Anyway great work and well done. Look forward to watching more of your videos. As I said a breath of fresh air in a sea of horrible travel videos.
