I met Richard once. I was writing for a small Nova Scotia newspaper and they arranged press credentials for me. I had arranged 3 interviews with drivers, one of whom was Kyle Petty. Petty's press guy called me on the Saturday and said Kyle had to be somewhere so if I wanted the interview I had to do it right then in the garage. This was at Rockingham in '03. So I beat it to the garage and the press guy introduces me to Kyle and we start the interview. I wanted to ask one really off the wall question to make my column memorable so at the end of the interview, I said, "Do you think NASCAR should race once a year on dirt?" He laughed and said, "ARCA cars are Cup cars and they run on dirt all the time. It would be fun, but it wouldn't be fair." Right then, I feel this arm around my shoulder... Richard stepped between Kyle and I and wrapped his arms around our shoulders and says, "What are you boys talkin' about?" Kyle said, "Technically, we're talking about you because you won the last race on dirt." And that started it... Twenty minutes with me, my favorite driver, and the King. Wherever Kyle was supposed to be, went out the window because he stayed the whole time. Most incredible experience of my life.
Yes he is! You can see the direct influence on the image of Burt Reynolds, which influenced the Dukes of Hazard, but the image is iconic. Long live the King!

Me too. It can't be easy, but Jr. seems to have embraced it. Fans argue back and forth all the time, but it seems like an almost universally accepted fact among those who raced with Earnhardt that Earnhardt would just flat out wreck people. They all knew it, and it was just part of who he was. Jr. clearly accepts all of his dad 100% which really is something to admire and respect.
Man, interview with Mike Skinner when he said they got into a fight, Dale, with a huge smile on his face, said immediately: tell us about that. Jr knew his dad better than us fans ever did, he knew he was a human with flaws. I love that he wants to know more, even if it was his dad being an ass or an angel.
Dale Jr. got to see a negative side of his father when he was growing up (his father wasn't really there). So he recognizes that his dad was a brilliant yet flawed human being, just like the rest of us
I don't think it bothers him. It didn't bother his dad. In fact his dad welcomed it! He wanted people to think that about him on the track. Fear goes with intimidation. When other drivers saw him in their mirror that's what he wanted them to think. If you're thinking about him you're much more likely to make a mistake.
♥️ Richard Petty ! He came to the Goodyear plant in my little home town and my 3 year old son hollered out , Hey Richard & he heard him & hollered back Hey Buddy ! My son is now 30 and still remembers that . Thanks Mr. Petty for giving my boy that good childhood memory.
Love Richard, I grew up about a mile from Charlotte Motor Speedway and when I was 4 or 5 years old they had some political event at the speedway and I always wanted to meat Richard so my grandpa threw me in the truck and we road over to the speedway and when Richard and all the politicians were walking out of a trailer my grandpa whistled and hollered to Richard this boy thinks the world of you, he turned around and walked right past all those guys and came over shuck our hands and rubbed my head he spent about 5 mins talking to us while all them waited on him to come back, he thought just as much of his fans and they did of him, I don't care if there is ever at 8 time or more champion he will always be the king.

At an IROC event at Riverside International Raceway when I was 7, Richard Petty was running with his driver's suit and helmet responding to the "all drivers to your car" call on the PA. He stopped and signed two of his famously long autographs for my younger brother and I and let my mom take a picture. Then he took off running again. The King is a class act.
One of the reasons I love Richard Petty is that he is a good hearted man who rejected racism during an era when it surrounded him. When Wendell Scott was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame his family was greeted by Petty backstage. After the even Wendell's daughter reportedly said, "People have no idea how many times that man 'accidentally' left a set of tires or tools or even a whole engine behind in the garage for my daddy to 'find.' They don't know because he's never bragged about it. So, I'll brag about it for him." Respect.

I met Richard Petty at a Pontiac dealer in 1992 just after he finished his final season. He was there on a public appearance and signed a poster for me. A true southern gentleman in every sense of the word. Thank you King Richard for so many memories.
Petty is a true champion. You can tell in the way he speaks. It's never "me" or "I".....always "us" and "we". Mark of a true leader and champion right there.
Im old enough to remember when petty was raceing, truth be told he and his team were nascars most notoriuos cheaters, but he was so popular with the fans much of it was winked at

I spent 10 minutes with Richard petty at the back gate of i70 speedway in Odessa mo when I was 19 years old. He was there with his truck team and was waiting to cross the track (practice was running) I went up to him to get an autograph and shake his hand. He is the nicest race driver I have ever met, period. He talked to me like I was an old friend, invited me to sit on his golf cart and chat while we were waiting for them to open the gate. Next day we ended up at the same little diner in town on race day for breakfast, he remembered me from the day before and sat at the table next to us, he chatted with me and my friends (other track workers) over breakfast, then when we went to leave we went to pay our tab and tried to pay his tab too, but come to find out he beat us to it and paid our tab first. There will never be another Richard Petty.
I'm SO glad the King finally had a "sit-down" with Dale Jr on the Pod while it's possible. To me, for Jr to not have had the chance to interview Richard Petty would have been the greatest opportunity lost to time there ever would be. Thank you to both Mr. Petty and Dale Jr for making this possible.

It seems that the best example of a chip off the old block applies if your dad happens to be Archie Manning. I think a Jr/Kyle Petty podcast would be an interview for the ages. I ain't saying there should be a 3rd person interviewer, No way!! Have it in a laid-back setting like Dirty-Mo. Back in the early 80s I was a UPS driver and delivered to many nascar teams. Long story short one of the teams gave me garage passes for the Richmond race. I was told do not take pictures do not ask for autographs. If you have one of these passes you’re supposed to be here. Just have a good time. Just about every big-name driver we tried to approach blew us off and would not even talk to us. However I saw the king Richard Petty sitting over on pit with his cowboy hat on maybe 10 minutes before they get in their cars. Me and my buddy walked Over to Richard and sat down with him and he treated us just like we were his sons. Had a good conversation with us laughed cut jokes with us. Then he said how would you guys like to have a picture. I sit down with Richard on the pit wall my buddy took my picture and then my buddy sit down and I took his picture and Richard shook our hands said thank you guys for your support took off his cowboy hat put on his racing helmet and got inside his car. That’s who Richard petty was. A pure class act.
I hope Richard Petty lives to be 200 ... I don't ever want to see him go. Thank God he is still with us and in good health. Absolute integrity, generosity, and class personified ... Long live "The King".
I was only a year old when he retired but I’ve learned all about his career, it’s amazing how he was at the first cup series points race in 1949 as a kid watching his dad and new WWII veterans racing in the original Charlotte track.

I could go into more detail but that day I got picked up by him and got to sit in his car and got his autograph. I watched him win at many places through the 60s 70s &80s. He was and still is a icon hero to me. Never be another king richard or silver fox david pearson. 2 of the greatest 305 wins between them 2. Nascar was something back then I miss it.
@@skinwalker893 I am always amazed how a lot of athletes remember races, games, the year, the lap, the quarter and so on. Guess when you're in that moment it's different and things stick with you. I am the same I can't remember what I did a couple weeks ago.
@@skinwalker893 They remember it because their careers have been well documented. It's the same reason Moms and Grandmothers keep photo albums. It's not difficult to remember stuff when you can look at a photo, film or read a story to help kickstart your memory.
Richards memory seems to be so solid still. You see guys on here that are much younger that don’t remember hardly anything about their racing years. I think this is the 10th time I’ve listened to this podcast or watched it
I met the King last May on the Kyle Petty ride. After 40 years of being a fan. He was riding his motorcycle in the rain, and still took pics with everybody and smiled big in every pic.
@@baddrivercam he was a little grumpy which is understandble riding a motorcycle in the rain at his age, but in every pic, big smile. It's almost amazing how he can do that for every fan no matter what he's going though.
That big long Petty finger: "Don't let that happen again." This man is a national treasure and it's going to be a very dark day in American history when he's gone. If you ever met him and spoke to him, you'd know what I'm talking about.
What a privilege to hear these stories from you and the king. I have always been a fan and love how humble you are Jr. Your dad was a bright light in racing and ill never forget watching him tear that track up as a kid. Never met Richard, my father inlaw did , back in the 70’s I think when Richard drove a 7up car in Cayuga , ontario. Met Kyle in an elevator at Michigan. These type of interviews are great , the old story telling , the stories they have! Winning, cheating, cheating to win , wrecks , highs and lows of their careers. As a mechanic who crewed for local half mile track champions in Delaware,Ontario make these stories very interesting and believable. Sitting in line at Bristol liquor store for Junior Johnsons autograph was great ,hearing his stories as he signed what ever you put in front of him was a treasure bigger than his autograph. Hope you get more great stories from more legends on you pod cast.
There's about a 95% chance I was in diapers at that race at Cayuga as my uncle was racing and my dad was in the pits. They used to pack em in at that track. I'm going to dive through the scrapbooks (thanks mum) and photo albums for that race. I have a beauty picture of my dad, uncle and Bobby Allison at Cayuga sharing a belly laugh from the looks of it. Cheers, Delaware is a fun little track.
@@buckodonnghaile4309 they had some great ASA (I think) races at that track , Molson 200 if memory serves me. A few guys tried over the years to make something out of it but didn’t succeed. Last owner put millions into it and supposedly had some good shows. He recently died and unfortunately,so did the track. ( Cayuga changed to Jusaka)

I'am a year younger than Jr when I was 5 I went to pickup my brothers from school with my mom and I remember them being extremely excited & they kept saying I can't believe we're going to meet Richard & Kyle Petty... it was 1980 in Slidell Louisiana at a Howard's department store ,Richard & Kyle were setup in the automotive "STP" section in the corner of the store, We were the only people there to see them ,I remember Richard picked me up & put me on his lap then passed me off to Kyle .I remember Kyle saying "I have a little boy about your age" I would absaluty love to have a picture of my 6 y.o. son with Richard & Kyle.
I’m right there with you. I’m an old East Tennessee boy and my dad and granddad took me to stock car races from the time I could walk and not have to be carried back in the 50’s. The King was always my favorite as long as I can remember. Back in the glory days of NASCAR you could tell the difference between Ford, Chevy and Mopar. That’s why it was called stock car racing. It was more brute force over finesse.

I met Richard Petty when I was a little kid, and he was near the end of his career. He was doing an autograph signing at the local auto parts store. We stood in line for hours, and The King was there for what was probably a whole day. I don't remember him because it was so long ago, and I really didn't know him as a driver, I just remember standing in line for a while. However, to this day, I don't remember any other driver just signing autographs the way he always would. There's more than the 7 championships in Richard Petty. He really did a lot for the fans.
Im glad this man is still with us kicking strong at 83 years old...i dont really remember it but i have a picture with him when i was 3 years old at his last race in Atlanta
I met Dale Sr. and Jr. at an AC Delco sales meeting. Both made short talks and then walked around the room meeting people, shaking hands, etc. Jr. seemed, relaxed and funny. Sr. was uptight, nervous and acted like he didn't really want to be there.
Before we both go, I want to say "thank you" to the King. Thank you for your excellence, and for you being you. I grew up when you and President Reagan had your special day. We have never met in life, but I thank you so much for you and your legacy and what you have meant to so many others. You Sir, a life well lived.
Think about it. This guy was in the stands as a kid watching his dad and a few drivers who were fresh WWII veterans in the first cup series points race in the first “strictly stock” race in 1949. The fact that he’s still involved in any capacity is amazing.

I came within feet of shaking Mr. Petty’s hand but missed out. It’s one of those regrets that I have lived with ever since. He’s One of my real life hero’s that has my total respect. Dale & Dale Jr are right up there as well. To sit and talk with the man would be a true blessing. Someday, Maybe I’ll get another chance... “I don’t get in a car... I put it on. It becomes a part of me. It’s what makes me able to do things others can only dream of.” Marriage killed my racing career.
I was a kid growing up in Germany,my first taste of NASCAR was in 1975 watching AFN American forces network beaming in NASCAR and immediately picked Richard as my guy and of course i became a Mopar freak, I know Mopars were pretty much done but AFN showed a lot of Vintage races to fill in TV time and Mopars were my love from Age 13 on

Richard Petty, in all the times I have been in the pits at any track, or have seen him at appearances outside the track, is the classiest and most gracious guy in the area. Every time.
i was at the petty museum, april 23, 2019. richard and two of his daughters signed a book i brought down with me. very nice family! everyone working at the museum are great! thank you all!!!
My fav Petty encounter; I was walking to my pit garage at Clt Close to the building when from the other side Richard was hauling the mail on a razor scooter and took me out at the corner of the building. He picked me up and as I dusted off he said If I drove like this every time on the track I might have had 201 wins. He was 65 at the time. One of my fav’s for sure.
Good ol Richard Petty he had some bad crashes back in the day that could have ended his life but thank God he's still with us this man is an Icon in the sport of racing.

He is the nicest race driver I have ever met, period. He talked to me like I was an old friend, invited me to sit on his golf cart and chat while we were waiting for them to open the gate. Next day we ended up at the same little diner in town on race day for breakfast, he remembered me from the day before and sat at the table next to us, he chatted with me and my friends (other track workers) over breakfast, then when we went to leave we went to pay our tab and tried to pay his tab too, but come to find out he beat us to it and paid our tab first. There will never be another Richard Petty.
I'm SO glad the King finally had a "sit-down" with Dale Jr on the Pod while it's possible. To me, for Jr to not have had the chance to interview Richard Petty would have been the greatest opportunity lost to time there ever would be. Thank you to both Mr. Petty and Dale Jr for making this possible.
@Elite Soulfly: I not only give you a thumbs-up, I wish I could give you a dozen more. You're 100% correct. Kyle and Junior are casualties of high expectations, not victims. It seems that the best example of a chip off the old block applies if your dad happens to be Archie Manning. I think a Jr/Kyle Petty podcast would be an interview for the ages. I ain't saying there should be a 3rd person interviewer, No way!! Have it in a laid-back setting like Dirty-Mo. Nothing corporate, Just 2 of the most famous sons of 2 of the most historic legends in Stock car racing recounting the most epic stories that are in their memories from a personal perspective. OMG!

I bought a brand new 1974 Charger because of Richard Petty running one in NASCAR. Back when "Win on Sunday, sell on Monday" really was the way it was.
People say he's overrated but I just sit back and think about '75. He was still dominating in the early modern era, it's age that killed his career.
I could listen to Richard Petty tell stories for hours!! and if I could just get his shop to help me with my 70 Petty Superbird tribute... :-)
Back in the early 80s I was a UPS driver and delivered to many nascar teams. Long story short one of the teams gave me garage passes for the Richmond race. I was told do not take pictures do not ask for autographs. If you have one of these passes you’re supposed to be here. Just have a good time. Just about every big-name driver we tried to approach blew us off and would not even talk to us. However I saw the king Richard Petty sitting over on pit with his cowboy hat on maybe 10 minutes before they get in their cars. Me and my buddy walked Over to Richard and sat down with him and he treated us just like we were his sons. Had a good conversation with us laughed cut jokes with us. Then he said how would you guys like to have a picture. I sit down with Richard on the pit wall my buddy took my picture and then my buddy sit down and I took his picture and Richard shook our hands said thank you guys for your support took off his cowboy hat put on his racing helmet and got inside his car. That’s who Richard petty was. A pure class act.
When the " King" wants to have a little talk with you , you better listen up good. Bless you your majesty.
I hope Richard Petty lives to be 200 ... I don't ever want to see him go. Thank God he is still with us and in good health.

I was only a year old when he retired but I’ve learned all about his career, it’s amazing how he was at the first cup series points race in 1949 as a kid watching his dad and new WWII veterans racing in the original Charlotte track.
@@thewoodseastofathens6026 I saw my first race at not quiet 5 years old. The 1964 daytona 500. I could go into more detail but that day I got picked up by him and got to sit in his car and got his autograph. I watched him win at many places through the 60s 70s &80s. He was and still is a icon hero to me. Never be another king richard or silver fox david pearson. 2 of the greatest 305 wins between them 2. Nascar was something back then I miss it.
I'm impressed with their memories. So many races, facts, people, anecdotes.
I don't know how they remember the dates from that many years ago, I can't remember what i did last week.
@@skinwalker893 I am always amazed how a lot of athletes remember races, games, the year, the lap, the quarter and so on. Guess when you're in that moment it's different and things stick with you. I am the same I can't remember what I did a couple weeks ago.
@@skinwalker893 They remember it because their careers have been well documented. It's the same reason Moms and Grandmothers keep photo albums. It's not difficult to remember stuff when you can look at a photo, film or read a story to help kickstart your memory.
The fact that this man is still here today has to be a milestone really Richard is the last real man in Nascar
Richards memory seems to be so solid still. You see guys on here that are much younger that don’t remember hardly anything about their racing years. I think this is the 10th time I’ve listened to this podcast or watched it
Richard is such a humble and kind man, I'd love to meet him someday.

I met the King last May on the Kyle Petty ride. After 40 years of being a fan.
He was riding his motorcycle in the rain, and still took pics with everybody and smiled big in every pic.
NFL is rigged that is how he has always been. He's a true class act.
@@baddrivercam he was a little grumpy which is understandble riding a motorcycle in the rain at his age, but in every pic, big smile. It's almost amazing how he can do that for every fan no matter what he's going though.

I love Richard Petty stories. He was one of my heroes growing up in the 60's.
That big long Petty finger: "Don't let that happen again." This man is a national treasure and it's going to be a very dark day in American history when he's gone. If you ever met him and spoke to him, you'd know what I'm talking about.
I met Petty at a cookout when I was a kid with my grandpa. He was the most down to earth dude. Awesome
What a privilege to hear these stories from you and the king. I have always been a fan and love how humble you are Jr. Your dad was a bright light in racing and ill never forget watching him tear that track up as a kid. Some generations will never know what they've missed. Especially if we keep rewriting history. God bless and keep up the great work guys!

Never met Richard, my father inlaw did , back in the 70’s I think when Richard drove a 7up car in Cayuga , ontario. Met Kyle in an elevator at Michigan. These type of interviews are great , the old story telling , the stories they have! Winning, cheating, cheating to win , wrecks , highs and lows of their careers. As a mechanic who crewed for local half mile track champions in Delaware,Ontario make these stories very interesting and believable. Sitting in line at Bristol liquor store for Junior Johnsons autograph was great ,hearing his stories as he signed what ever you put in front of him was a treasure bigger than his autograph. Hope you get more great stories from more legends on you pod cast.
There's about a 95% chance I was in diapers at that race at Cayuga as my uncle was racing and my dad was in the pits. They used to pack em in at that track. I'm going to dive through the scrapbooks (thanks mum) and photo albums for that race. I have a beauty picture of my dad, uncle and Bobby Allison at Cayuga sharing a belly laugh from the looks of it. Cheers, Delaware is a fun little track.
@@buckodonnghaile4309 they had some great ASA (I think) races at that track , Molson 200 if memory serves me. A few guys tried over the years to make something out of it but didn’t succeed. Last owner put millions into it and supposedly had some good shows. He recently died and unfortunately,so did the track. ( Cayuga changed to Jusaka)
All respect to Petty. Its nice to see an older gentleman who is so lucid and intelligent. We need more people his age to teach us young 40 year olds what's what.

I'am a year younger than Jr when I was 5 I went to pickup my brothers from school with my mom and I remember them being extremely excited & they kept saying I can't believe we're going to meet Richard & Kyle Petty... it was 1980 in Slidell Louisiana at a Howard's department store ,Richard & Kyle were setup in the automotive "STP" section in the corner of the store, We were the only people there to see them ,I remember Richard picked me up & put me on his lap then passed me off to Kyle .I remember Kyle saying "I have a little boy about your age" I would absaluty love to have a picture of my 6 y.o. son with Richard & Kyle.

I’m an old East Tennessee boy and my dad and granddad took me
to stock car races from the time I could walk and not have to be carried back in the 50’s. The King was always my favorite as long as I can remember.
Back in the glory days of NASCAR you could tell the difference between Ford, Chevy and Mopar. That’s why it was called stock car racing. It was more brute force over finesse.
Great stuff. Great to see Richard on the show. Petty's are some of the kindest and most honorable people ever. He was my favorite driver growing up.

The King, what an awesome personality and force of NASCAR. We so much enjoyed our time at the Richard Petty Museum, a must do for everyone.
I met Richard Petty when I was a little kid, and he was near the end of his career. He was doing an autograph signing at the local auto parts store. We stood in line for hours, and The King was there for what was probably a whole day. I don't remember him because it was so long ago, and I really didn't know him as a driver, I just remember standing in line for a while. However, to this day, I don't remember any other driver just signing autographs the way he always would. There's more than the 7 championships in Richard Petty. He really did a lot for the fans.
Im glad this man is still with us kicking strong at 83 years old...i dont really remember it but i have a picture with him when i was 3 years old at his last race in Atlanta
I met Dale Sr. and Jr. at an AC Delco sales meeting. Both made short talks and then walked around the room meeting people, shaking hands, etc. Jr. seemed, relaxed and funny. Sr. was uptight, nervous and acted like he didn't really want to be there.
Before we both go, I want to say "thank you" to the King. Thank you for your excellence, and for you being you. I grew up when you and President Reagan had your special day. We have never met in life, but I thank you so much for you and your legacy and what you have meant to so many others. You Sir, a life well lived.
I love Richard Petty and I get tickled every time he brings up that Martinsville race in '79.
Think about it. This guy was in the stands as a kid watching his dad and a few drivers who were fresh WWII veterans in the first cup series points race in the first “strictly stock” race in 1949. The fact that he’s still involved in any capacity is amazing.

I came within feet of shaking Mr. Petty’s hand but missed out. It’s one of those regrets that I have lived with ever since.
He’s One of my real life hero’s that has my total respect. Dale & Dale Jr are right up there as well. To sit and talk with the man would be a true blessing.
Someday, Maybe I’ll get another chance... “I don’t get in a car... I put it on. It becomes a part of me. It’s what makes me able to do things others can only dream of.” Marriage killed my racing career.

I was a kid growing up in Germany,my first taste of NASCAR was in 1975 watching AFN American forces network beaming in NASCAR and immediately picked Richard as my guy and of course i became a Mopar freak, I know Mopars were pretty much done but AFN showed a lot of Vintage races to fill in TV time and Mopars were my love from Age 13 on
God bless richard. i met him in 2018 or 19 at a car show in Ridgeley MD. my grandpa loves petty and was teary eyed when i gave him the photo of me n Richard for xmas 2 yrs ago.

Richard Petty, in all the times I have been in the pits at any track, or have seen him at appearances outside the track, is the classiest and most gracious guy in the area. Every time.
Richard's awesome if he made it through battling Bobby in 1972 and charging Charlie in 71 he has patience for anything
i was at the petty museum, april 23, 2019. richard and two of his daughters signed a book i brought down with me. very nice family! everyone working at the museum are great! thank you all!!!
My fav Petty encounter; I was walking to my pit garage at Clt Close to the building when from the other side Richard was hauling the mail on a razor scooter and took me out at the corner of the building. He picked me up and as I dusted off he said If I drove like this every time on the track I might have had 201 wins. He was 65 at the time.

Growing up my father always told me Earnhardt Sr was a dirty racer knocking people out of the race to win.
That was true and the reason that I did not like him. I'm sorry he died in the car but karma has a way of biting you in the a$$
