I was 24 when this came out in the 1970s. We never considered John Denver to be country. There was a lot of soft rock with a folk music sound back then.
The country music scene of the time didn't really accept him as country. He actually won a country music award, I can't remember which, but a quick Google search will tell you ... and on live television the person presenting it took out his lighter and lit the piece of paper on fire.
The human vibrato amp with the sustain of a pedal steel. Incredible pitch and strength in all octaves. He can drop onto a note and I swear to god he won’t budge off that one frequency for a whole lung’s worth. Good songwriter, amazing singer. The Karen carpenter of male pop.
I don't think John Denver is as talented on guitar as Karen was on the drums though. She's in a class by herself in singing also. You'll actually hear John's voice crack here and there, not elite in my opinion.
John wrote this about his wife Annie to make up for a quarrel they'd had. He did one dedicated to Jacques Cousteau called Calypso because he admired his work so much.
Just to add, they were at a ski resort and he wanted to go skiing and she didn't and they got in a fight, he wrote this on the lift. I think. It's been a while.
A few years ago, after serious heart surgery, I was having trouble with weakened lung capacity. My surgeon suggested singing along to John Denver songs to help improve my lungs. I'd always liked John Denver, but after singing along (admittedly VERY out of tune), I discovered a new appreciation for his breathing patterns as well. Love the reactions. Keep up the good work. Cheers from Oz. Glenn
John Denver was a great singer-songwriter & actor. He had so many hits in the 70's-80's. Some of his signature songs were "Take Me Home, Country Roads", "Poems, Prayers & Promises", "Rocky Mountain High", "Calypso", "Thank God I'm A Country Boy", "Sunshine On My Shoulders" etc. John appeared in several films & television specials during the 70's-80's, including the 1977 hit "Oh, God!", in which he starred alongside George Burns.
He wrote this for his wife after they had an argument. He left to cool off and wrote this song for her during their cool down. He came home and played it for her. 🥰I bet she forgave him. 😋😄 And no he's not Australian, he's North American, born in Roswell NM. His family are of German descent. His music is considered to be folk. Thank you for your reaction!! 🤩
Although he is known as a country singer I agree with others this particular song is more folk - whatever it is I have always liked this song, it’s calming and beautiful.
He might be thought of as country now, but he wasn't back in the day. He was variously labeled as folk or pop-rock. Even "Thank God I'm A Country Boy" didn't really fit into what passed for country back then. He was all over AM pop radio.
I saw him in concert. It was one of the most incredible concerts I have attended. No flashing lights no lasers, just him singing. His voice was just as good live as in the recordings. I remember the first time I heard of and saw him was on talk show. He was performing Leaving On A Jet Plane. At that time it was a major it for Peter, Paul and Mary. I was a little skeptical. I had heard Burt Bacharach sing before and he had a weak voice. Obviously John Denver was phenomenal. Not long after that he came out with Rocky Mountain High.
I attended two concerts of his. Both times he never left the stage. His band and back up singers took breaks and he stayed and kept singing, just him and his guitar. He was amazing.
Busking in front of my drunken relatives at Christmas time to John Denver was quite profitable for a five year old. My appreciation for all music and the natural wonders in life started with this guy. A good time to say thanks John
John Denver was one of the greatest song writers /poets ever. Annie Martell was his wife. This song was written for her and recorded in 1974. Please take time to listen to his greatest hits album. It is beautiful.

You should try "Sunshine on my Shoulders," "Rocky Mountain High," "Leavin' on a Jet Plane," "Fly Away" with Olivia-Newton John, "Poems, Prayers, and Promises" my personal favorite, and "Shanghai Breezes"! He's always been primarily known as a folk singer. Part of the folk revival scene that began in the 50's and went through thr 1970's. His music featured prominently on A.M. radio stations where all sorts of types of music was played, mainly popular chart hits. A.M. was listened to by the majority of people at the time. So John was a very well known and loved artist.
A beautiful, gorgeous unashamed love song written for his then wife, Annie Martel. They'd had an argument and he stormed off to ski. He said he wrote the song on a ski lift in ten minutes. I think most of us ladies would admit if we're honest that we'd love a man to write a love song like this for us. John Denver has one of the most beautiful singing voices ever put on tape. You can hear the emotions he puts into his songs. He struggled with depression (and alcoholism) and you can hear the sadness that was always in his voice. He was definitely an icon and definitely missed. He left us way too soon.
Beautiful song. My niece and her husband danced to this for their 1st dance about a month ago. Perfect song. Was really surprised because they like alternative rock
