At 14:09 You passed the Woodrow Wilson plaque without comment .......! And what about the fine example of the 'Art Deco' Woolworths Building. And the Bonnie Prince Charlie inscription on the M & S Building. And the fine Corinthian Capitals with the carved bull and ram heads at the market hall. And the James Street Baths, one of the finest Turkish Baths in the country, listed, and in danger of demolition. And since you were near Tullie House, what about 'The Cursing Stone'? You walked right past 'The Guild Hall' with the carved heads with no comment. It seems you walked past quite a lot of Carlisle without comment or without looking up!
Brilliant! Thank you so much for pointing it all out for me - I'm sorry I couldn't quite squeeze in all the information - there's a lot to discover in Carlisle as you've very helpfully shared with us :) I'll pin this comment so that everybody can see this excellent extra info! Thank you so much for watching and for your comment - I hope you enjoyed the video!
Hard to believe you didn't walk through the fantastic Cathedral grounds, you were almost there but veered away.....what! Never mind though, a great walk round a very interesting city.
9:31 although Newcastle City centre lies further north than carlisle city centre, the northernmost point of carlisle is slightly further north than Newcastle.
Another great video my friend. We went to the Lake District for a holiday and we went on a day trip to Carlisle on the last day. I have only one word. Underrated!!! There are so many things to see and do in Carlisle and I just feel like ‘The Border City’ needs more attention. So much interesting history.
I'm with you on that one! The history of Carlisle is so fascinating and a great example of the long, long heritage of border conflicts between England and Scotland :) Hopefully this video brings the city a bit more attention as you say, but it's certainly worth the visit for anyone who's thinking of the trip :) Thank you so much for watching - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video!
Absolutely! Carlisle Castle is one of the most impressive in England - and just one part of the city's riveting history :) Thank you so much for watching - I'm so glad you enjoyed the video!
Ah, you should have peeped over the Viaduct bridge for a panoramic shot of the view. Still very enjoyable though. Thanks for uploading! By the way, that puddle at 17:14 is annoying after heavy rainfall. All the pedestrians coming both ways try to claim the wall so the traffic doesn't splash them. It's been like that for years 😂
Thank you so much! I'm really glad to hear you enjoyed the video - there's a lot to discover in Carlisle (even more than I managed to mention here), but it's certainly a great city to explore :)
I'm very glad to hear it! Carlisle is a fascinating place to visit, and though I can't speak personally about what it's like to live in, it's certainly a distinctive city, and within reaching distance of some spectacular natural and historical wonders around Cumbria and Northumberland :) Thank you so much for watching - and best of luck with the move!
It is! Carlisle is a wonderful place to explore especially on a nice sunny day :) Thank you so much for watching and subscribing - it really helps me! And I'm so glad you enjoyed the video!
Enjoyed the video & walk around Carlisle . Fascinating history in the city . And one I have visited a few times. One thing that occurs to me , is how much cleaner some of these cities are . Compared to my own city of Birmingham . Testament to their local pride in their city . Good on you .
I agree! It's a fascinating place with centuries and centuries of history - and it's amazing to walk among it on the many gorgeous streets, which as you mention were nice and clean on this morning :) Thank you so much for watching - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video!
I love it too! Carlisle's history and heritage is as rich as they come in the north of England, and within a short distance of some of the country's most spectacular natural landscapes, and of course, Hadrian's Wall! Thank you so much for watching - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video, and I hope you get the chance to return to Carlisle soon :)
I wouldn't know if it's there myself - a little before my time I must say! But I hope that this walk around Carlisle brought back some nice memories of the city for you - it certainly is a great place :) Thank you so much for watching!
The course of the wall actually runs through the northern part of the city though are no remains the nearest visible part I think is Birdoswald which is something like 15 miles away
This is not my website. I simply love the walks. When you live somewhere for most of your life, you take the ancient buildings for granted. Seeing them through the eyes of a stranger helps you appreciate them anew.
Carlisle is really a market town NOT a city by city standards, it is only called a city because it has a cathedral. Not a lot to do as it is not that big. Quite cut off from the rest of the country so rather isolated. Best thing is it is close to the lake district however only so many times you can go there and rather too busy these days with tourists.
Lived there for three years after moving from Dumfries, hated the place was so run down in the late seventies.Found the people quite rough and very unfriendly.
Which confuse the heck outta me. I visited Carlisle numerous times and it never felt that big of a city. Honestly I sometimes have trouble recognising Carlisle as a city lol.
No. It says it is the largest settlement in Cumbria. It is a city because it has a Royal Charter granted in 1158. Size or wealth has nothing to do with it.
From April 1 1974 to April 1 2023 the non-Metropolitan District of Carlisle was by area the largest local government unit in the UK to have city status. The city Council was abolished in 2023 and the status of city has been returned to the settlement of Carlisle itself
Nice walk but the commentary........lacks facts. For example, the cathedral is small because Cromwell’s forces tore down the original nave to repair the castle after the siege in the Civil War. It is not small because it was once a church........
I didn't realise that! My research led me to believe the latter as you say - but thank you very much for pointing that out, it's always interesting to learn these things :) Thank you very much for watching - I hope you enjoyed the rest of the video!

In the 1950's I used to stay with a distant relative who managed the Palace cinema situated in Botchergate in a small arcade.LOng gone I expect.
I wouldn't know if it's there myself - a little before my time I must say! But I hope that this walk around Carlisle brought back some nice memories of the city for you - it certainly is a great place :)
Thank you so much for watching!
Demolished and replaced by an apartment block. Carlisle is nowhere near as good as it used to be.
@@CiderPang27 Thanks for your reply.
How far is hadrian wall from Carlisle?

I havent been in Carlisle since around 1965, is that not where Scotch Corner is located?.
Is this the website of Karen Blackadder?.
Just come across your comment. It is my home city and I am very proud of its 2,000 year history.
Scotch Corner is the opposite side of the country.

Lochside estate in Dumfries is gorgeous with such wonderful locals
@@deedub577 Sarcasm at its best. As part Scots, I would much rather live in Carlisle than Dumfries.
According to Wikipedia, Carlisle is the larges city in England.

If I remember correctly, whilst Carlisle is physically a tiny city, administratively it is larger than London.
From April 1 1974 to April 1 2023 the non-Metropolitan District of Carlisle was by area the largest local government unit in the UK to have city status. The city Council was abolished in 2023 and the status of city has been returned to the settlement of Carlisle itself
