You should apply render with a plastering trowel and hawk instead of throwing it on the wall with a brick trowel.
You'll not only apply the render faster and more efficiently, you'll have less areas to fill after you've run the straight edge.
2 simple hand tools will increase your efficiency and finish by 25% Sir.
