Dude your tutorials are incredible. This one is awesome. I took ten years or so away from production and composition and it's been a joy to get back into making music
Great stuff Reid (as always)! You mentioned being surprised at the 808 name for the distortion effect and thought it might be a coincidence. As it turns out, the term "808" is a big deal in the guitar world for a totally different reason. The "808 circuit" refers to the architecture of the original green Ibanez TS808 overdrive pedal. It's also commonly known as the "Tube Screamer." It's probably the most popular (and emulated) guitar pedal ever made. It's almost always included as an effect for any guitar amp modeling software. Guitar nerds (myself included) will sometimes refer to that particular overdrive as an 808.
That’s awesome! I own the 1981 Classic Ibanez TS-808 (with the original malaysia chip before they shortened the name to TS808 without the dash - ) it sounds great and is in mint condition still!! 👍🏻
Here’s a vocal production tutorial where Karra records and mixes the Acapella from “Push & Pull” using Pro Tools (99% Stock Plugins) th-cam.com/video/2ABojDKeOQI/w-d-xo.html
Thank you. I'm trying to figure out how to match up the rhythm of my keys and 808. I recorded my keys first. Need to put to a beat detector. Don't know how to do any of this if you can help pretty please:)))
It's called the 'tube screamer 808' because one of the models of Ibanez guitar pedal 'tube screamer' is called the TS808 (the other type his the TS9) completely unrelated to the 808 Roland drum kit bass drum sound but a bit of a coincedence none the less.
Thank you! Love your content. How much do you low-cut on your kicks when you have trap songs? I see so many different answers someone yesterday I saw said up to 60 😳
Hey can you show us how to get clipping 808s like in "Miss the Rage". Especially how to master and export a Song like that from ableton. I dont get how to keep the dirty, clipping sound in the final mix.
When mixing songs with both 808s and kicks- I’ve often noticed that certain notes of the 808 pattern are out of phase with the kick, but only certain notes. So, I end up having to split the 808 melody into 2 separate tracks, one track with the polarity flipped, the other not. And this is both before and after processing… Why is this?
Why are your studio monitors so close to the wall? Where is your acoustic treatment? You're one of my most trusted puppets for music production and I just got through deep diving into setting up my new studio monitors, took everything out of my office room to totally rearrange so my desk is in the center of the room and I've got a $200+ lowest budget minimal set of a well regarded acoustic panel kit in my Amazon cart (can't recall company name), hemming and hawing over whether to buy it or shell out more for the more expensive mid tier set, and I don't see you doing.. like.. *anything* these studio monitor setup guides said! The tweeters for the top speaker isn't even aimed at your puppet ear level let alone 60° angles to your puppet head. I just don't know what to think. Does any of that stuff make such a difference if the most trusted puppet in the business isn't bothering with it?
Hmm ... didnt understand anything. Thought to learn something about 808 and what that is. You dont even explain waht 808 is at first and than you jump into it, in a complex environment and talk about respect? I think, this has nothing to to with respect, its creativity. Advice from me ... keep it simple. The ability to keep it simple is intelligence.

you would if talking about a ts808 and not a ts9 or a ts10 which sound different
Aside from your mixing techniques, you are a such a great musician. Sometimes, I'm just listening to the songs and not the tutorial itself. 😊. Thanks.

There's a free plugin called A1 Stereo Control I use to only put the frequencies below 125 Hz in mono on the bass bus and widen the frequencies above.

What I do is load them in simpler and use the actual envelope on the sample section
Nice video as always but I think you might need a few aspirin after every session for some reason. Most entertaining mixing tuts hands down.
Watching this damn puppet Bob his head has me dead! I'm gonna have to rewatch later to actually pay attention to what he's saying LOL
What made you start using sidechain compression instead of manual ducking? Great tutorial btw
