I love seeing your videos of Stuart despite having had a bad fall up high on the mountain about 4 years ago. A big granodiorite boulder just decided that it was time to roll down the mountain. Unfortunately, I was in the path and was knocked off a ledge. It’s a really interesting story but it’s all about what was done to get me off the mountain by my partner and the Navy Search and Rescue team from Whidbey Island who risked their lives to pull me off the mountain under terrible conditions and fly me to the Harborview trauma center in Seattle.
I don’t remember a thing (although the granodiorite pebbles in my hiking pants pockets provided a hint) I hope to get up there again to look at that 91 mya pluton and the 150 mya Ingalls ophiolite. Some day…

My sons and I went to the Teanaway Rhyolite Quarry and lugged out three buckets of beautiful rocks. We saw you chucking gorgeous banded rhyolite picture rocks thinking No, No, don’t throw it out. Take it home… After hauling a bucket of rocks the mile and a half back to the truck our arms were several inches longer. Yes, that video was invaluable to us as avid rock hounds. We were glued to it. We appreciate all your videos.

    1) I don't care how many videos you do about Serpentinite; the rock continues to enthrall me. Its beautiful, and what a story! In some ways it looks like how I imagine a fossilized ocean would look.
    2) The care and affection you show your wife melts my heart. You guys are amazing!
    Thanks for everything!

Thank you Liz and Nick for this great video.
Liz: it takes A LOT of patience to hold back and wait while your spouse does their thing. We appreciate you being so generous with your time!
Nick: These videos are very special because you take us to incredibly scenic places that most of us will never be able to visit. You give us a wonderful insight to the beauty of Washington state and the Cascades. On top of that, you throw in a bit of geology: serpentenite, Mt. Stuart batholith pluton, Teanaway feeder dikes, as well as fault zones. Thank you for taking us along with you! Please keep making more of these…..

  • @SweetSunrising

My feedback on why these vids work so well, is because they have a strong visual and mindful component for absorbing the nuggets of information you'll share, and you give us time for making their connections with the scenery and pieces you're looking at along the way. I can take it and play around with forming some geological perspective in my own neck of the woods, and figure out the questions to be asking. Plus, the excursions are fun! I was just at a gem and mineral show, and a vendor was explaining the orange in a hematoid quartz I bought, now here I get to see that orange in the weathered iron-rich serpentinite outcrop you were pointing out-it brings more connections and familiarization for me. Plus it's great to keep showing us those color & texture changes in parts of the landscape that might be tell-tale signs of faults, it would be so easily overlooked in any other circumstance on someone's hike. It's amazing how that Serpentinite was originally basalt on the Pacific sea floor, and today it's a high ridge located ~2500Ft. above sea level. I'm always looking forward to your next field videos. So much fun.

And it really does only take once. My neighbors and I went on a hike along an old railbed on Sunday. I was excited to find some rock outcrops near the beginning and many more as we progressed. One of my neighbors took a side trail; when she rejoined us, she said, "You know, Liz, I looked for rocks the whole way. I've never noticed them before." Did I feel good, or what?

Don't apologize; your stuff is great. I called my brother to inform him of your works and he laughed. His side of the extended family have been following you for years and I was late to the party. There is so much that is known since my Geology 101 class in 1966 it's truly amazing. My brother wrote you about the marr volcano that is Battleground Lake and the Boring lava's. Anyway we are all fans and have nominated you for beatification. The highway books you recommended made our trip to the Oregon coast this summer most interesting; it was fun going toward the coast range knowing what we were looking at. We live within a mile Benton City and recently took our drone out to view the bad lands. You have added so much richness our lives. Keep up the good work and thank you so very much.

Great hike and spectacular views. I'm so enjoying the insights into what you're walking on and seeing that would never have occurred to me without your 11/2 yr [ish] enrollment in your Top of Ladder School.

RE Your comment about being uncomfortable about the richness of content...
Speaking for myself, as an oldie I appreciate your walks or sponateous streams, because they (particularly) allow enough time to absorb something new or clarify the geology - as distinct from a lecture style with its packed agenda of often unrepeated learning points.
Yes, and also the relaxed rambling thoughts and off topic moments too.

I love the hikes you take us on, the breathtaking scenery, the overviews, the details, and the narration. I know that you probably feel that much of it is redundant, but seeing the big picture and stories from multiple angles helps us, as pattern-seeking creatures, to retain the storyline and better recognize things like the various forms of serpentinite, faults, boundaries of terranes and various formations.

Thanks, Nick, for another great talk. I can just imagine that rock extruded from a mid ocean ridge, subducted a millennium later, but instead of being swept into the depths it's pushed up into the sky to form these mountains. Perhaps there are parts of the story that will be revealed with a closer examination.

All of your content is a joy like taking a beautiful hike with a knowledgeable friend. I think we absorb more with the relaxed conversational pace, gives us time to think about what you're saying while we look at impressive mountains and real rock examples.

I would love to see you come back and do another video on what might be some faulting and possibly some feeder dikes. Thanks to Liz for being so patient
