Lol. "Why is everyone acting like they knew this all along?" Because we knew it all along. We pointed it out all along. When you finally start believing something that's been said for years it kind of proves that someone knew it all along. If you have to imagine it was some sort of lucky guess to make yourself look less gullible that's the definition of being smug.

OK my answer to "how did you know?"
I've never lived in the New York area. Most of my life is in California, and all I knew about Donald was that he was a guy who did some flashy stuff in his little corner of the East coast, then became a bit of a meme as a reality show host. So, leaving out the stuff New Yorkers were familiar with...
    1. He was a Democrat up until the point where he decided to run for President.
    2. His opening move in that campaign was laced with bigoted language. "[The Mexicans] are bringing crime, they're bringing drugs..." Anyone who's spent any time studying this knew that those who cross the border do so out of desperation and there's practically no terrorists, and a tiny minority of those are associated with the cartels. Frankly the main reason he did surprisingly well among Latin Americans is because he insulted Mexicans on a regular basis.
    3. His proposals to deal with complex issues were like a carnival barker selling Springfield a monorail: Boondoggles sold by a con man.
    4. Once he was sworn in, the first thing he did was impose a travel ban on all Muslims except Saudis.
    5. He marketed himself as this "genius billionaire" which financial tabloid rags like _Fortune_ accepted without due diligence, but you don't see his football league, his casinos, his university, his steaks, or his vodka anymore. He's a "genius" and yet he can't sell meat and booze to _Americans._
By the time the attempted extortion of Ukraine ("That phone call was PERFECT") rolled around, I knew he'd act like Mussolini or Hitler. He didn't respect the election when he _won,_ there was no way he'd accept defeat.

Within a couple of months of him being elected I realised it was all a con and he was actually a narcissistic self-centred self aggrandising grifter. It’s hard not to be smug when you see a pompous fool like Trump come a gutzer (Aussie for falling on your face). Solely because of Trump for the first time in my life in our last federal election I voted as far left wing as I could possibly get. The question is if I could see this all the way from Australia why the hell couldn’t people in America see it? I spent 10 years working in America in the 1980s, great country a lot of good people. But it is obvious to most people outside of the US what a craven liar he is and how unfit he is a leader. He lies to you because he can. He found fertile soil for his lies to take root and be repeated. Some need to learn to think critically, to be an observer (watch what they do not what they say) know your history and where these types of things lead. As soon as I heard he was running I was like surely they won’t because if they do it is going to turn out bad, and maybe not just for the US. Incompetent leaders surround themselves with even less competent people because they are threatened. His desire for loyalty superseded the desire for capability. He needed to surround himself with with sycophants and yes men because his ego can bear nothing less. Everything that Trump touches dies. At least now one can have an example of what a confidence man looks like. “Believe me, I am the only one.” This should have been your queue for your bullshit meter to be five alarm fire. The man could barely put together coherent sentences. All talk, no results. Took credit for others work and accomplishments. Still has no redeeming qualities at all. The writer also needs to think about how many times republicans (and probably himself) has demeaned, degraded or insulted democrats. I,ve said that if I had a dollar for everytime I have been called a "libtard", etc, I could pay off my house.
He also needs to remember that we have been trying to tell republicans all along. So, yeah, there's a bit of "I told you so" thrown in, as well.

Insults go both ways though, it's not just the right and if you try to point that out to someone on the left that they are being offensive the response is "good the deserve it because they are clearly stupid and support harmful policies".

For those of you who are old-school "Star Trekkers:"
“But they found it's a trap, like a narcotic. Because when dreams become more important than reality, you give up travel, building, creating. You even forget how to repair the machines left behind by your ancestors. You just sit living and reliving other lives left behind in the thought records.”

The thing is New Yorkers knew. And warned. And begged. But most of the country doesn't even consider New Yorkers part of America, so what they have to say goes unnoticed.
Smugness is of course never helpful and very, very rarely effective. There were accounts dedicated to persuasion and not mockery on both sides. But the smug went both ways too. Humans are human, even when we cling to our bubbles and refuse to recognize humanity in each other.

Thank you, Beau for your compassion and integrity in considering the perspectives of the people who were/are influenced by Trump and his associates. I have beloved family members who still believe Trump’s lies… it’s been difficult to manage how I respond to the comments of these loved ones.

I want to also throw out there that part of the smugness also comes as a response to the toxicity of the Trump era. Trump himself was a openly hostile figure in public discourse, smugness is a natural response to watching the people who embraced that toxicity full throatedly get taken down a peg. Not saying it's necessarily helpful or constructive, just adding a further explanation for where it comes from.

That's what I got too, a Trumper calling others 'smug' is a true case of pot meet kettle. Remember in 2016 when we were all mad that Trump only won off the electoral college, and all the Trumpers were telling us 'he won, get over it'? I think the guy just got so used to smugness while inside the information silo that he sees it everywhere he goes now.

I was a racist for not voting for Obama, a misogynist because I would never vote for Clinton, and accused of being faschist (at the very least) for voting for the man who didn't spend his career learning how to doubletalk and be politically correct.
But Trumps the toxic one. That's where it comes from.
