Last night, on his WABC (NYC) radio show of 8/5/23, Tony Orlando interviewed Andy Kim about the songs he wrote or co-wrote. Andy talked about the success he and co-writer Jeff Barry (also thankfully still with us) had with Sugar, Sugar. Tony surmised there were a thousand cover versions of Sugar, Sugar. So, I decided to see how many I could find on the 'Net to listen to. I listened to a dozen or so that were actually issued by record companies. as well as artists who only sang it on TV performances and versions recorded by individuals and indie bands. One of the hits on youtube was for this version. What struck me in the first 10 seconds of listening was how close this version is to the one recorded in 1971 by Sakkarin, a nom de plume for the UK's Jonathan King. But then I noticed this could pass for a straight-up lesbian song in 2023. A woman trying in 1969 to release Barry and Kim's song as written would not go far. I wanted to see if I could find any commercially released records from 30 - 50 years ago sung by a woman. I only found two so far. While there were a few foreign language versions sung by woman, I only know German. I found a 1969 version by Marion in German (v=zxsWZxJr4FU) in which the lyrics were completely different and gender neutral. I prefer your version to Marion's. I also found a 1989 recording by Annie Amazulu (v=k1Q3q9SjNNg) in which she replaces all instances of 'girl' with 'boy'. Of course this song is popular at weddings. Its a good song with a great arrangement. But some guests may be asking each other "which team does she bat for?" Timed August 6, 2023. WABC archives their shows for several weeks.
"Sugar, Sugar" isn't an easy song to cover. When done by other singers, it sounds like a parody. Wilson Pickett's version was good. This cover could use some background singers. Hand claps too, but The Archies have the definitive version.
Not the real Archie’s. The real Archie’s were made up of studio musicians with Ron Dante, lead vocals, Andy Kim & Toni Wine on backing vocals, together they provided the voices of the Archie’s using multitracking. It was the most successful “bubblegum” pop single of all time.
the electric guitar is very loud, it is supposed to be an accompaniment, not a guitar concert, the main performance is led by the singer, it is what happens when there is a lot of personalism in some musicians who want to be noticed.
Weird everyone else was saying the guitar wasn’t loud enough! I guess if it’s true what they say and the truth lies somewhere in the middle, then it must be mixed just right!
