So you saw the great comedy duo Rick Mayhall (Flashheart) and Ade Edmonson (Baron von Richthofen) together. Now you've got to react to 'Bottom' their slapstick, violent humour in the TV series (1990's/2000's) and Live is legendry. You'll love it. Their early comedy outings include the groundbreaking 'Young Ones' that had cult following in the early 80's.
My great grandfather was in the flying corps. He lasted more than 20 minutes. In fact he lasted until the third battle of Ypres. Shotdown over no man's land. No idea if he died in his kite, in the crash or if he survived all that and was killed in the ground. So this is a rather special episode of Blackadder for me. Especially as Flasheart was chosen to represent the RFC. Glad you enjoyed it.
Rik Mayall and Ade Edmonson together is always a special moment. I see a few others have mentioned the show Bottom ( with the two mentioned ). It would be unlike any show you have ever seen. Shouting, swearing, arguing, fighting all with a healthy dose of stupidity thrown in.
Obviously, it goes without saying but I'm going to say it anyway: it takes a very special comic actor to do a cameo in a legendary sitcom starring the likes of Rowan Atkinson, Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry to steal the show in every scene he's in. And Ade too. Two of my all time favorite lines in any comedy: "How lucky you are to find ze toilet so amusing. For us it is a mundane and functional item but for you... ze basis of an entire culture" and "For you, a man of honour, ZE HUMILIATION VILL BE UNBEARABLE!"
Rim Mayall on being asked to appear in Black Adder had one demand, he got the funniest lines and could act his character to the extreme. The guy delivers every time.
This episode always makes me smile. At college, my Dad was in the same play as Rik Mayall, and was higher billed too. He also had a higher rank in the RAF than Flasheart. Two facts he likes to remind me of whether we see this episode.
Rik Mayall…an eternal legend who is still loved and missed to this day. Lord Flashheart was one of his greatest roles, and yet he was only in two episodes of the original series. It says so much of what an amazing character Flashheart was and what a leviathan of a performer and comedian Rik truly was. WOOF! 🫡
He was actually in the last episode of the first series as well. But because of contract with The Comic Strip he was listed as Mad Gerald in the cast list.
@@jimcook1161 I’d genuinely forgotten that. Probably because Rik’s performance as Lord Flasheart - and Blackadder Series 2-4 being a massive improvement over the first series - overshadowed everything else.
Rick mayall was a comedy legend gone way before his time. He appeared in the young ones which was revolutionary at the time. He is also very well known for Bottom and the new statesmen. Bottom live plus the series are really worth reviewing.
Rik Mayall and Ade Edmondson started in comedy together as the Dangerous Brothers. Try and catch them in the Dangerous Brothers World Of Danger, doing their impression of the 1970s film The Towering Inferno. This was their first time on British TV together I believe. I was hooked from that moment. Rik Mayall, in a solo roll, played a character called Kevin Turvey Investigative Reporter.
Ade Edmondson (The Red Baron) and Rik Mayall (Flashheart) were a comedy duo, they had their own hilariously mental series called Bottom, you guys have to do it.
The line was originally ’Sound’s like Battersea Dog’s Home here!’ but Rowan Atkinson just couldn’t say the line because of his stammer so it was changed to Cruft’s.
21:43 Baron von Richthofen- "Finally the two greatest gentlemen fliers in the world meet. Two men of honour, who have jousted together in the cloud-strune glory of the skies, face to face at last. How often I have rehurced this moment of destiny in my dreams. The valour we two encapsulate, the unspoken nobility of our comradeship..." 22:06 Lord Flasheart- "Puff!" Love this. Gets me every single time.
Adrian Edmondson (playing Baron Von Richtofen) and Rik Mayall (playing Flashheart) were in an 80's comedy series called The Young Ones, which is worth checking out.
Bottom and Man Down need to be on your watchlist, Rik’s energy is always off his chain and his five mantra for life at Exeter University is an absolute must for any time you’re feeling down x
Agree with all the comments how brilliant Rik and Ade are and this is the best episode of all the Blackadders…loving watching your journey through all the Blackadders. 2TU!
This series was aired back in the UK in 1989. In 1994, I was in the Royal Air Force in Saudi Arabia for a 4-month tour. There was little or no entertainment. Sattelite services were limited and even the US forces channels didn't show much. As it was, most US Air Force personnel I served alongside had seen and loved Blackadder, especially season 4. We had a VCR and TV combi back then and someone had donated the Season 4 boxset. It got some wear. Nightly screenings for both US and British airmen. One of the things that kept me sane, pre-internet and proper cellular phones with text messaging.
This episode is for sure in the top 3 of the entire series! It is however not even close to the series finale. IYKYK. Can't wait for the video on that one.
You totally got this now! It's sheer quick wit ..and so many one liners . You really need to watch it over and over to catch them all really...it never gets old. God it's so well written.. best comedy of all time . ❤❤❤
Had the pleasure of spending a few minutes in the company of Rik Mayall about the time he was becoming famous, its a memory I treasure, as much fun in the flesh as on film. You should watch him and his comedy partner Ade ( the Red Baron ) in Bottom.
Lord Flasheart played by Rik Mayall is part of a long time comedy double act with Ade Edmondson who plays Baron Von Richthofen. Check out, The Young Ones, or, Bottom, or a performance of their alter egos, The Dangerous Brothers. Like, Bottom, extremely violent, comedy slapstick.
More Rik Mayall (and Ade Edmondson and indeed Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry) can be seen in "The Young Ones", "Filthy, Rich and Catflap", "Bottom" and "The Comic Strip Presents..."
This episode is a beautiful mix of the totally over the top Flasheart, and the cynical smart Blackadder, flavoured with a sprinkling of little gems from the rest of the cast. It was good to see you guys enjoying it. Keep Reacting.
Hilarious slapstick comedy duo Rick Mayal (Lord Flasheart) & Ade Edmondson (German Officer) can also be found in 80’s series The Young Ones, the Comic Strip & Bottom (which you should definitely check out) - Rick Mayal also played Mad Gerald the insane dungeon prisoner in Blackadder series 1

The Darling joke was only supposed to last a few jokes in the first episode and that was the end. When the audience went mad over it roaring with laughter they wrote it in throughout the rest of the series
Rik Mayall was originally cast as the poltergeist Peeves in the first Harry Potter film Apparently he was so funny that none of the kids could keep a straight face, so he got paid even though all his scenes got cut
Some classic double acts in this episode with Rik Mayall & Ade Edmondson and Stephen Fry & Hugh Laurie. As well as their sketch show 'A bit of Fry & Laurie' Hugh & Stephen were brilliantly cast as Jeeves & Wooster in a TV adaptation of the classic P.G Woodhouse books. As others have said Rik & Ade are great in Bottom and started out as the Dangerous Brothers before starring in 'The Young Ones' which was a groundbreaking show when alternative comedy started in the 80s. Lord Flashheart is inspired by the character Flashman from the series of books by George MacDonald Fraser which are hilarious. The books are a combination of historical fiction, boys own adventure and comedy and are one of the funniest reads you'll ever encounter. Flashman was originally a bully in the classic book 'Tom Brown's School Days' but Fraser took the character and made him into a wonderful anti-hero.
