We've been using this style of feeder in 5 gallon buckets for the past 2 years, and they work great! Hardly any waste. We cut notches in the bottom of the elbow so it can rest on the bottom of the bucket, making it very stable (about half of the elbow is notched out). Although the crows are eating the feed, you want to keep them coming around! Crows chase off the hawks. Put out pans of corn for them.
I've looked at several videos to make a feeder as our chickens cause a mess. Your's has been the best. And the soup can idea is a deal maker. Great idea. Thank you
Empty soup cans. GENIUS! I’m hoping I get to the point where I can grow enough grains and seeds to start making my own dry feed to go along with the kitchen scraps and greens that we currently feed. Something like this would be great!
Another thing you could use is a threaded elbow where you tighten a nut on the threaded end to keep it in place as well as you can get a threaded cap and cap it at night. Also before you thread the nut on you could put an O-ring on it then tighten the nut on the O-ring to make it water tight. It does mean you will spend a little more money but in the long run you will save even more money in feed from water and pests.
I love your high tech solutions!... and your chicken, pig, and calf math. Always a new way to think out of the box. I need to try your english muffin and sour dough recipes. Maybe next week. Too much to do now that it is 'spring'.
That's a good talented idea to stop the rodents away from eating the chickens's food. And thanks you so much for telling the wonderful details informations, that we'd never ever think of.
I actually made one for my chickens last year and still use it with no problems but never made a video for it because I am not too good at making videos so when I seen yours I thought this would be perfect for my website and it will get you views from my viewers too. I don't have very many on my TH-cam channel yet but I get 100 thousand views a week on my website.
Brilliant! You know, I really appreciate the practical tips, techniques and solutions you consistently offer on your channel. Your efforts are a blessing to me, and I'm sure to many others! :-)
Love the hi tech idea 👍👍 Just watched your diy water bucket 🪣!! Gathering info/ ideas… going to get chickens 🐓 this next spring. Been following & you two are amazing 🤩. Love the teamwork.🐓👩🌾❣️
Great idea, I have two of these , but they are NOT spill proof! The birds make a gigantic mess with these even more so than what I was using before. Inside or out such waste! a catch pan is what I am thinking at this point ...thus another thing to clean. For all we do to make our lives easier these animals have much more time to make us more work.
Thanks for sharing looks like a great feeder for your chickens and I love the quick way to keep other animals out of the feeder low-tech it works great. Thanks and have a great and blessed day :-)
Thank you for this video. We have a big problem with sparrows like a dozen or more trying to live with our chickens. I will try your idea and also going to add a little flimsy plastic strips I saw in another video . They said it keeps the sparrows away but chickens will stick their heads past them. But they didn’t have your 90 degree elbow idea which I love. Thank you. I subscribed.
very nice video! after watching TONS of videos on diy chicken feeders this was by far the best one! And you didn't even make it on video :-) Very enjoyable to listen to, easy to follow directions and information! Excellent!
Do you have a diy large container for water for chickens. I like the 5 gal diy you’ve demoed, but I wondered about one for a larger supply of water. Thanks
My, this looks familiar. 😜 I agree, this style of feeder is great. I made mine (and did a video about it) about 3 years ago. It worked great for my situation at the time.
Glad it's been working for you. We have been using this style for about 5 years and love it. There are a lot of great videos and versions out there to help people make them.
Yes, there are. I think the first one I saw was from a guy in Australia, but I can't swear to it, it's been so long. Yeah, it's a great yet simple design that works very well.
As I was watching the video, the whole time I was thinking “rats”. I have had some problems that I was able to resolve through better control of food. When I saw what you did with the soup cans I “genius”. A simple and elegant solution.
Excellent info as always, been watching for a while but getting chicks in a couple weeks. I have a starter coop and planning a larger run and placement of feeder and waterer. getting 6-8 chicks and since this is my first go at it, hoping for the best.
Very nice, thank you so much for this. We just got 21 chicks this year and they're about to go out with the other 11 chickens that we have, I've been researching ways to be more efficient on their feed because they waste a lot of food on the ground on their open feeders, this really helps, thank you. I may have to build 3 of these. lol
Ive been a subscriber now i havent been notified of any notification about any new videos. Just whining love your work will love you folks. Keep up the good work
Thanks so much I was going to going with another plan using PVC pipe but I have 46 chickens and I think this idea of yours is going to work just great. Will this same plan work with water?🤔
Great job on those feeders! I am curious to what the green thimble(s) were on the outside of the can, the feeder that was in service? Some sort of holders for camp lights (base for the little propane bottles)? Stay Blessed My Friend
Thinking of doing this style of feeder but my husband is worried about moisture. Does rain get in? Living in the south we have a lot of humidity, does that harm the feed?
Hi, great idea,, just a question: how do you keep the rain out ? at least one of the four holes must face windward ! can that not drive rain into the bin, and make the grain moist and stickey ?? when used outdoors ?
Yours was simply the bestest and easiest design on TH-cam, I made mine in a jiffy and I think the chickens will love it when they use it tomorrow (the silicone is still drying :)
We had serious problems with this feeder design. The dominant chickens will keep the others away or scared to put their head in it. Our egg production went way down. Your mileage may vary. I had to add another feeder. Thanks for sharing.
It can be hard to keep up with any improvements made over the years and I know with me I don’t have the capability to search for just your chicken (or pig or rabbit or whatever). What would be fantastic is if you pulled up old videos and recycle and re-edit them together. For instance, pull up all your videos on chicken feeders and start with your first rendition. You would then transition to any improvement or changes you made next followed by the next etc. You can explain which one you like the best or why you might have more than one type and then at the end you coup edit in your favorite build. Because homesteading can be an ever-evolving lifestyle it would be great to see how your homestead is evolving and show some of the best of practices for newbies who don’t end up seeing all of your older videos. And it would be a great way to freshen up the info on some of these cold winter days when you really don’t want to go out in the cold to video new subjects. I just rewatched your video on moving pigs when things didn’t go as planned and they escaped which I loved😂. Moving pigs would be great to show the evolution on your processes. Recycling/re-editing these topics would not only be very informative and show that even if you started with a good process you can always improve on it and it can help encourage other new homesteaders to see that they don’t have to be perfect once they step on their new property. Really enjoy what you share with us and think you both are excellent teachers. Always look forward to new videos and also watching some of the older ones too.
Great feeder! I was thinking you had some alarm set up to your smart phone to stop the crows! Old school tip are the best! lol Thanks so much for sharing how to make the feeder.
Love how frugal and humble you guys are. Inspiring.

I do much appreciate the simplicity and frugal ways you approach things and yet very functioning
3 questions for ya... how many chickens do you have eating out of it, what size pvc, what are the green things on the outside of can?
Built one of these today probably less than an hour just wanted to thank you for the idea and I love to watch your videos keep up the good work
I love your high tech solution. Farmers are so inventive.
I know we have it easy over here. God has an amazing plan for you guys!
We _love_ the high-tech soup can crow blockers!!!! Thanks for sharing!
This is EXACTLY what I was looking for! I have 3 chickens and 2 geese and none of them like soggy food! Lol! Thank you for sharing this!

Awesome video. Love the high tech solution to keeping the crows out!
This is brilliant, I have bought some extra piping in case I need to cover the feeding holds to keep rain out.
Great idea. And yup 2-3 inches of rain tonight yay spring
I did this about a month ago for our chickens and ducks and it was the best thing ever....i'm not spending a fortune on feed anymore.
Kerri Hatz do your ducks get the food wet and clog it?
@@rocasey1 No they did not get it wet at all. Both the Chickens and the ducks eat from it and we have not had any issues.
@Kerri Hatz
I also have ducks & was wondering if this method would work for them as well, thank you. What size PVC did you use, 3 or 4 inch???
Great piece:-) and high tech protection was super very super!!!!
Great idea for keeping the birds and yikes stuff out
the can you showed on the table had PVC elbows the second that you showed had some green rings around the outside what were those?
Brilliant! And I love your fancy crow repellent system.
That's a good talented idea to stop the rodents away from eating the chickens's food. And thanks you so much for telling the wonderful details informations, that we'd never ever think of.
Another awesome idea with the cans and the crows thank you Kevin 😀
love it - building one tomorrow :), fence is todays project
I'm definitely making a couple of these! Well... I sent the video to hubby to make a couple of them... 😄😂😍
Thank you so much for your common sense, practical advice and easy to watch/learn from lessons. I appreciate it very much. Love your channel!
This is BRILLIANT! I cannot like this idea more! Thanks for helping us newbie homesteaders out!
Pine Brooke Homestead .....Kevin and Sarah are always a wealth of great info for us homesteader newbies!!

I've thought about this in the past. Looks like it works. With young birds I do this, however never made the switch like this on older birds.
Brilliant! Glory to God!
Brilliant! You know, I really appreciate the practical tips, techniques and solutions you consistently offer on your channel. Your efforts are a blessing to me, and I'm sure to many others! :-)

Hhh beautiful idea..💚💚🌽🌽God bless you man
Real smart job Kevin especially them high tech cans !!
Great idea for dry feed...I ferment mine though.
Very clever

Love the high-tech solution. Smart idea. Really enjoy your videos. 😁
Great video!! I think you just solved an issue for me! Thanks, I'll be heading to the co-op today
Hey Kevin and Sara. Hubby was wanting to know if you could show us how your turkey feeder is made. He saw it on several of your videos
Thanks for sharing looks like a great feeder for your chickens and I love the quick way to keep other animals out of the feeder low-tech it works great. Thanks and have a great and blessed day :-)

Have you shared a video of your watered on the teepee? I'm intrigued

what do you use to drill the hole
I don't understand how the feed stays dry in blowing rain storms or blowing snow. Can you explain it.
thanks for sharing your Automatid chicken feeder with us Kevin !!

Thanks! Sometimes the simplest solution is the best. I consider the crows...rats with wings! God Bless - Kevin
Does the el is go up or down
How do your deal with mold issues through the eating areas?
Excellent info as always, been watching for a while but getting chicks in a couple weeks. I have a starter coop and planning a larger run and placement of feeder and waterer. getting 6-8 chicks and since this is my first go at it, hoping for the best.

What size PVC is that 3 inch?
Great thanks for sharing
nice idea dont remember if you told us the size of the holes, 2 or 3 or 4 inche?
Put a trail camera on it a night and see what kind of visitors your getting. Im going to try this with a 5 g. bucket. We only have 11 chickens.
Thanks so much I was going to going with another plan using PVC pipe but I have 46 chickens and I think this idea of yours is going to work just great. Will this same plan work with water?🤔
Wondering the same
Did you try this with the water and if so did it work?
My chickens and goats co-habitate. Do you think this is strong enough to keep a goat out?
What size hole saw do you use for this? Also what are the green caps on the feeder at the end of video?
Great job on those feeders! I am curious to what the green thimble(s) were on the outside of the can, the feeder that was in service? Some sort of holders for camp lights (base for the little propane bottles)? Stay Blessed My Friend
Awesome awesome awesome.thanks for the tip
How do you keep the winged rats from over eating?
Awesome thank You.
Thank you. I'm building one today. Sparrows are eating more feed than the chickens.
Love your high tech thing. Great video.
Do you think it would work for my ducks toO?
What is the name of those rubber boot collars on the outside of the PVC fittings? Thx!
Would this work for pigeons?
What are the green things on your 35 gallon garbage can feeder
Awesome chicken feeder Kevin! Thanks for showing us how you make these. Hope you and the family has a great weekend! :-)
Thanks CB! Hope you guys have a great weekend also.
Will they not eat a lot of feed (more than required)?
it loox great but how u keep mice out?
What are green rings on feeder?
What is the green ring on outside for?
I've been having issues with my cans qfter qbout 2 years of using this method. The layer pellets are molding inside.
Love this one a lot❣
Thinking of doing this style of feeder but my husband is worried about moisture. Does rain get in? Living in the south we have a lot of humidity, does that harm the feed?
I've done this except I used a rectangle shaped sturdy storage container. Feeders at both ends. It hold 3 bags of chicken feed.
Whats the things on outside of holes
And what are they for
Hi, great idea,, just a question: how do you keep the rain out ? at least one of the four holes must face windward ! can that not drive rain into the bin, and make the grain moist and stickey ?? when used outdoors ?
When you made this did you have to cut the pvc pipe? How many inches wide is the pvc and Also how many inches off the bottom
What kind of feed do you use crumble or pellets.
Like the ideas , Thanks for sharing.
What do you use to feed your chickens? I'm a newbie on raising chickens.
Yours was simply the bestest and easiest design on TH-cam, I made mine in a jiffy and I think the chickens will love it when they use it tomorrow (the silicone is still drying :)

Thank you

Would this method work on a rectangular shaped trash bin?
i have just bought those auto pedal feeders x 4 at £ 40 each christ i wish had seen this idea before brilliant
great idea
so helpful thx
