if Arafat accepted two states why did he walk away from every peace agreement? Not a single Palestinian leader ever accepted the legitimacy of Israel. It’s not clear that esteemed Amy Ayalon still understands the Palestinians. He does understand Hamas, but not the rest of them

Very nice of you. He is 78 year old. He actually came from the Navy. Didn't make his carrier in the Shin Bet. He was the head of Shayetet 13. The Israeli Navy Seals and IDF Navy main general. He is very left wing. Very honest and dissent human being. Strong advocate for the 2 state solution. Like most Shin Bet heads.

I now know Amy Ayalon and his vision of the conflict and the future thanks to this podcast. The man knows what he is talking about having been a director of Shin Bet. His vision of the future two state solution, where PA together with Arab countries who recognise Israel, rebuilt and normalise the Palestinian state is credible and worth negotiating. It’s the best solution proposed so far.

Not necessarily so. He is a warrior and an Israeli patriot, no doubt about it. Whether he has a scientific and intellectual background to comprehend this problem in its depth, is a big question.
      Why do I say so?
      1. As a tool of resolution of this conflict he offers the two-state solution. That is despite the fact that Palestinians NEVER wanted to have a state of their own. They never had, never strived and never tried to create one, despite multiple opportunities and extremely lucrative offers. Worse, when pushed by external forces to create some proto-state, they ended up with a bastard PA and a monster Hamas.
The two-state solution is an idea invented by the looney Western intellectuals who know nothing about ME, don’t know it and don’t understand this is a completely different civilization working on different principles.
They don’t even understand such a very simple thing that Palestinian society has not reached yet the degree of maturity to espouse its own nation-state dream. It is a very primitive, underdeveloped society stuck in 14th century. This is exactly why they don’t need the state and did everything to escape being bogged down in this outlandish Western concept.
      2. The idea of two states living side by side peacefully like a wolf and a lamb, does not take into consideration Israel’s security. With introduction of that state, Israel will be 12 km wide in its narrowest spot. Which is nothing for modern artillery. That means signing away your own sovereignty allowing your potential enemy to decide when and how to strike by dissecting you on two halves. And with this major vulnerability strike they will, as they will not be able to resist temptation.

A good interview, but I missed the spiritual aspect which is basically the most important. That is the core of the problem, not to say the problems we struggle with here on earth, but on different levels of course.
We read about what will happen next in Israel and with Israel in several places in the book of books, the Bible. I am referring to the Prophet Ezekiel chapters 38 and 39. But we find this important theme in several places in both the OT and NT.

@rp1049 He is not telling the truth about Palestinians wanting two state solutions. Even after Israel pulled out from Gaza in 2005, Palestinians in Gaza didn't take the opportunity to build a free, peace loving society. Half of them voted for Hamas in 2006. Ayalon was one of those in favor of Israel pulling out from Gaza. It was a disastrous move in hindsight. Especially when you consider that palestinians are not in favor of living side by side with Israel.

I think Ami Ayalon himself doesn't understand the relationship between Hamas and the Palestinians. In fact, he made the same error as Western media and politicians, considering Hamas as a foreign intruder in Palestinian society. At the same time, the reality is Hamas is a part of that society! All members of Hamas have their families in Gaza, they're their own people! Saying Hamas is using people in Gaza as human shields means that they're using their own brothers, sisters, parents, cousins, and friends as human shields. Sorry, but I can't believe this...
