I didn't expect you to dislike it that much. I know story is different, but even as someone who doesn't like adaptations I found it quite enjoyable. Plus you know this was made for the new generation of kids, who are more likely to take interest in 2/3d animation. The movie is my absolute favorite, but it did scare me when I was younger.
Can we all please agree on this: Out of everything wrong with this movie, Benedict Cumberbatch and their version of Welcome Christmas were not part of it.
I agree that the Grinch having a book about Christmas AND being really good at girft wrapping makes no sense. He hates the Hollyday, why would he have so many things about it? that and his twerking was awful XS The animation is pretty BUT the characters, plot and humor are not well done. Also, the music is either cringy (Grinch rap) or not memorable. Another bad thing in the movie. The Grinch past makes no sense. Why would he be the ONLY KID in an orphanage? Why nobody visited the building if they knew it existed? Why they were no adults to take care of him when he was young? The Who's were mean in the Jim Carrey version but that's also cruel. Rejecting a kid cause he's different than yours, never sending him letters or visiting the orphanage is so selfish and mean. The Grinch didn't deserve that ;(
This adaptation to How the Grinch Stole Christmas may not be my favorite (the original 1966 version is my fave)but in my opinion, it’s still pretty good for what it is.

Honestly, the main reason I don't like this movie is because it's just bland. Like it's not god awful, but its not memorable. And the modern touches like the remix of the Grinch theme really date it, too. It's just another illumination movie. Inoffensive and marketable. I don't really care for the live action movie either, but I will give it credit that I remember it. It's definitely iconic and Jim really carries the movie for me. That's another problem. Benedict Cumberbatch is a great actor and it's not that this performance is bad, he does fine, it's just soooooooo bland. Especially compared to Jim Carrey who is just constantly bouncing with energy and the original cartoon who is just oozing with malice and contempt. Even the Grinch's design is bland. There was originally art for the movie where the design was closer to the Chuck Jones cartoon and it looked really good but they ended up de- Grinching his design I guess in an effort to make him more sympathetic to kids, but all that does is confuse the moral of the story. While the Grinch is the protagonist, he's also the villian! He steals everything from the Who's! And not even because he wanted their stuff! He did so they wouldn't have their presents and decorations and he could chuck it off a cliff! He had every intent of taking away what he thought made Christmas special in an attempt to upset the Who's, and only had a change of heart when he realized he was wrong. It's not that he's not a sympathetic character, people can definitely relate to him, but he is the villian of the story and his design is supposed to reflect that. Having such a non-threatening, boring design and a bland performance and the sympathetic backstory they try to add in makes it seem like he's supposed to be the hero of the story and that his crimes were justified. When the whole point of the story was that he was wrong for trying to steal Christmas! The blandness of the movie just ruins it's own story and it's not even that hard of a story to tell.
I really like this version but it’s probably because I didn’t grow up watching the original or the live action versions, didn’t even watch the live action one until a couple of years ago. I’ve noticed that anytime people grow up watching something and they see a remake of it later it’s never as good, so even though I really like it I can understand why a lot of people don’t.
Here's something to make you stop and think: Sure, we see the grinch being hassled by the whos to enjoy Christmas, but consider this: can you IMAGINE if it was just someone who simply celebrated a different holiday? THAT'S ultimately why I can't stand this version.

I did like a couple of the elements (Max for one thing, and Benedict Cumberbatch is still King) I was just not a huge fan of the Grinch's backstory. It just doesn't make sense that simply because he was left in the orphanage he chose to hate Christmas specifically. I also totally feel they fashioned this Cindy Loo Who after Agnus from Despicable Me.
True, it might not be as good as the live-action film, but I've seen worse. It is definitely better than The Lorax in my opinion. And you can't deny the animation looks really good and I never thought Benedict Cumberbatch could voice the character so well.

The Grinch rap song was awful plus it makes NO SENSE since his teeth and fur are perfect. He doesn't have yellow dirty teeth and termites in it. The Jim Carrey version got that right AND his personality too. This new Grinch is not a jerk, he plays pranks on the Who's and they aren't scared of him. Illumination didn't understood this character at all! Shame on them XS Cindy lou is soooo boring in this movie. All she does is trying to help her mother and capture Santa, that's it! She's not cute and innocent like in the cartoon or proactive and kind like in the Carrey version. If she wasn't in the film, it won't make a difference. Basically, this girl is useless! One of my complaints I had with this movie is how the "Who's" are designed. They look too human! This movie and "Horton hears a who" were both made by universal...and yet the way the "Who's" we're portrayed during Horton looked PERFECT! Why not just use some of the designs from THAT movie for THIS movie???
1966 animated original holds a nostalgic place in my heart. It was always replayed when I was a little girl. (In the 90's) but my dad was born in the early 60s and introduced me to it so I'll always love it. My mom introduced me to the books because she loves reading. And I love Jim Carrey. So loved the love action. This one was too bland for me, but kids like it... sooo, I guess
Since you dislike this movie, I would like you to give another Who story by Dr. Seuss adaptation movie a try. It's called Horton Hears A Who, starring Jim Carey and Steven Carell. Don't feel pressured to watch the recommendations btw, for some reason I have a feeling you do. It's just a recommendation you can watch off camera if you want to.

Forget bout whatever original one there is, this movie really made me laugh and is overall turned towards young watchers and it’s got very great animation and the grinch is hell funny. If adults watch this movie to give their serious adult point of view on this just don’t watch it and don’t rate it. I found it awesome and funny

For example about 90% of the Whos have normal looking hair instead of goofy hair like in other versions. Also that screaming goat is annoying.
I liked this when I saw it in theaters but looking back it’s so cringy that I’m not surprised that I haven’t re-watched it since and I re-watch pretty much everything movie wise at least once but two movies I can say outright that I never re-watched are this and Last Christmas and with that one it was the mid-movie twist that killed it for me because up until the twist it was a genuinely enjoyable Christmas romance. I appreciate that you’re honest in your commentaries and you’ll actually say outright why you don’t like something if you didn’t enjoy it instead of sugar coating things so you don’t upset people.

This version is a completely different take on the story, so I understand why you didn’t like it. My favorite version is still the original animated version. I kind of liked the Jim Carey version, but not really. You know how you said you didn’t like CindyLou in this one because they changed who she was? Well that’s exactly how I feel about the Jim Carey version with regards to the Who’s. In the original animated version, the Who’s always understood the true meaning of Christmas and were never materialistic or commercial about it. It was the whole point of the story. They all taught the Grinch how wrong he was, not just CindyLou.
