I know this is a few years old but omg I'm so grateful to finally stumble upon this video. It was hard to find someone doing this exact model. I was about to smash the whole thing out of frustration
Thank you for this video. As a single mum who some how broke the pully on the mower yesterday I was shocked to find my exact mower in TH-cam with a fantastic video to replace the cord, super easy instructions to follow so thank you thank you saved me the cost of labour to get it fixed!
This video was awesome! Mom said the pulley broke so I drove down expecting to fix either the rope or the spring. I found the clip fell off, and watching the video helped me. Popped the clip back on and reassembled and she started right up
After failing and the repair center said 2+ weeks, I tried TH-cam again and found this - was perfect for my Poulan Pro 550. Trick was turn till tight & aligned (wasn't 7 turns) and cut cord exactly the same length as broken one - the Poulan cord runs up the push arms. Thanks Hank!
Good video mate. I'm reassembling my mates old mower that he pulled apart 3 years ago because it had a broken pull start cord. It has exactly the same starter assembly that is in your video. First off, he had too much cord wound on so it would rub against the pulley housing and jam. He had also lost that long center compression spring so I had to make one out of some spring steel, and thankfully it works like a charm. But there is one thing you have overlooked, there is a small thin washer that goes under that cir-clip/pin that holds it all together. If you look at the white Cam piece center hole you will see there is a small recess (maybe 1mm deep) which you fill with grease and the washer keeps the grease in place and it also stops the pin/clip from scouring the white plastic cam.
Just fixed my Briggs & Stratton. Thanks for the easy to follow instructions, that took the guess work out of play. Now many years of cutting will be followed by many more cuts.
Graet video I broke the cord on my snowblower and took apart the coil to try and fix it and opened up a can of worms, This video set me on the right path and got it working aging. Much appreciated.
Thank you so much for this step by step informative video. The string and spring on my mower got tangled up and I was able to pull it apart and put everything back. Much appreciated!
This was very very helpful thank you so much you saved me a ton of money by just reinstalling the old one. Very good instruction clear concise and to the point I love it
Thanks for posting this. I actually had a complete assembly that included the spring for a Brigss but in the process of installing it, the clock spring unwound on me. Yeah that was my fault. Anyway your method of getting that spring back in place worked for me. Great job!
Hank you are a life saver! I knocked one of the pawls out. It did start with one pawl but I removed the cotter pin and the unbroken pawl went back in and works fine now! Thanks man!
I've found too on these, they did a rather big redesign on these in 2015, the quality went up considerably. I have a 2016 Bolens that's amazing to use, but my 2014 lacks in comparison, same engine too. In 2015, the governor springs changed, the recoil cup changed, the air box changed, and it looked to me like the thickness of the aluminum changed.
Hank, I just got done fixing one of these that the plastic tab inside the upper housing that retains the other end of the spring had broken off, I drilled a hole in it and put a small metal screw in it, so far works good.
Roger camp that's my issue mine is a bit different then this video , but my little plastic piece has fallen off dumb design if you ask me. So the screw you mention that's to replace the broken little tab?
Thank you for the the video. I'm looking for the part number of the light plastic piece that has springs inside and outside of it . Not clear in any assembly drawings for my Murray mower.
I just fixed a power washer with this similar shroud. I noted a piece spinning and stopping right underneath where you pull the cord. It still runs but im wondering what could have broken off. And if I would have to replace the whole cover of it. It looks like fan blades spinning and stopping
Hey hi I have a mower just like that one but I need the starter cup (just the white and yellow thing with the spring). Where can I get it? Can you sell me one? Can you point me in the right direction to get one? Thanks.
Thanks for this upload. I have a mower with a Briggs 550ex engine. Bought the recoil for the 500e engine (because it looks identical.) Snapped it into the shroud easy peasy, can pull the cord, but it will not rewind. Looks like it isnt meshing with the starter cup. What a pain, I'd take an older Briggs any day over this plastic junk!
G'day All, Thank-you very much Mate!! You Just saved me $56!! I wasn't putting tension on the spring & the screwdriver trick.... Whiteman Magic!! Now I'm going to knock over a Tallie & then I'll knock over the yard!!
I have the exact one youre working on in this video. The holder on the bottom of the shroud for the spring broke off being plastic of course. Any idea where to get a whole nother shroud for that spring to be hooked on?
Well Adam I have been working on one with the exact same issue, I drilled a hole in the shroud in around the same area as the broken tab and put a small metal screw in it to give a place for the spring to hook onto,so far it seems to work but I haven't replaced the rope yet,it was broken off as well, hope this helps.
This video was a godsend. I had taken the rewind starter apart and for some reason couldn't get it working after reassembly. Because of your video, I come to find out that I was missing the large spring! Thank you so much for the video! Note: I can't find the spring and I don't think it can be ordered separately. Anyone know where I can find one?
Thanks! This will help me, however my issue is, I think, the pin that holds everything in place popped off or maybe broke which led to my whole issue (I believe)...well the pin is gone , does anyone know if this is something I should be able to find at a hardware store?
Does anyone know the part numbers for this assembly? I ordered what should have been the correct 450e recoil starter assembly from Briggs and it's completely different (has two little wings that pop in and out as it spins). They insist it is correct, but it is NOT. My mower is exactly like what is featured in this video. How can I get these parts? Someone help please. It's driving my crazy.
Awesome video. Pull mechanism on my mower just came loose. The retainer clip was bent wide. So I bent it back into shape and reassembled it with these instructions. Thank you!
I had to tug the handle to get mine to recoil, it only recoiled a little at a time.... it was because the coil spring had a bunch of rust causing the spring to hang up on itself from all of the friction. Sprayed a bunch of wd40 in the spring area and it freed up perfectly. 7 year old push mower kept outside.
My keeper thing came off and messed up the circle white thing and the off white circle thing with the ears on it. Would you have a part number to those items?
I wonder why did briggs use the rachet paw for ever then switch to this design then switched back.. smh my issue is i changed the spring now when i pull the rewind it wont catch to the cup on the mower. Almost like a slipping clutch on a car..
lawnside82 im having the same problem right now & ive broken the plastic piece the coil connects to inside 😭 - my concern is that all the pieces i took off aren’t the same as the 593595 complete assembled one....i don’t know what to do now - how do i think like a man to fix my mower
Thanks Hank! I have engine 09p602 0019 with flywheel cup 544 on it. The replacement recoil assembly is $40+. Do you know where I can find just the broken plastic pieces so I can save a few $s? Thx
You have better luck than me most of mine the plastic tab on the top piece is broke on me lol. Still ive got alot of cheap mowers because thats all thats wrong with them.
Thanks dude it was super simple. I figured it out because I thought you had to crank the spring then get it on then I found your video it was simplistic mower fires right up.🫡🇺🇸🙏🏻😅

This extra step was exactly what I needed because I forgot where the small washer went. Thanks to you and Hank for the major help!
Just fixed my Briggs & Stratton. Thanks for the easy to follow instructions, that took the guess work out of play. Now many years of cutting will be followed by many more cuts.

Wow searched for hours and this video was the exact model as mine. Thank you left a like 👍🏼
Great guide. First timer here and this helped me reassemble the unit. After attempting to start, sadly my spring/coil still needs replacing after.
Thank you!!! My father has dementia and decided to work on the lawn mower. I could not figure out the coil mechanism

Awesome video and thanks.. you didn't babble on and on, you had a great way of explaining & showing how everything went together properly..

Great video. Much appreciate the information and the process followed. I found this video extremely helpful.
So glad I found this. I was about to set my mower on fire. Watched this and was back up and running in 5 minutes. Thank you
Thanks dude! My starter fell apart after starting the mower and I had no idea how to reassemble it.
Thanks man you saved my ass after struggling trying to find a east wat to put the coil together 👍
I have to deal with this system for mowers that I get in for repair all the time
Keep up the great videos 😀👍🏻
Thank You! After looking at several video's this is exactly what I needed to see.
I was winding it up wrong... video was a big help, thanks!

@@jolenegilvary692 yes I put it through the top of the housing and the end of the spring anchors to it,so far it works good.
Thank you for the the video. I'm looking for the part number of the light plastic piece that has springs inside and outside of it . Not clear in any assembly drawings for my Murray mower.
Thanks !!! This video really helped after I had already screwed around for an hour first.
Great stuff,I tried to get the spring in a few times, obviously the wrong way and nearly lost my fingers, after 2 days I have found this,ta.
Such a pain in the ass to fix. Thanks for the reminder of what I was doing wrong.

There was a model design change from 2014 to 2015
Do you need to remove the string to wind it up?
Great video, it was a big help!!!
Thanks
Hello, what is the white plastic ring on underside of the black cover housing?
The only video that helped me repair this mess I made.
Just what I was looking for, Thanks 👍👍
G'day All,

If one of the two fingers on the grabber break off will it cause no start issues?
No the engine wont rotate
Sadly I got my dads friend to fix my pull cord and I just happen to found this video and it’s the same as my mower lol
Hi does anyone know where I can buy the same exact recoil with cup and everything
My keeper thing came off and messed up the circle white thing and the off white circle thing with the ears on it. Would you have a part number to those items?
There are not part numbers for these unfortunately. You’ll have to replace the whole part
