  • Everyone knows that Mario Kart is successful, but is it the most successful video game franchise of all time? Well, there may never be a definitive answer to that question, but in this video, I make a case that Mario Kart could very well hold that title. Mario Kart is obviously not the only series to have a claim as the most successful franchise of all time, so please let me know your thoughts below the video!
Also, as there are several other strong cases to be made for other gaming franchises, would you like to see more content like this? If so, give the video a like and post down in the comments!

This was a great watch. I had no idea just how prolific it was in terms of sales, especially in comparison to some of the other racers out there. Personally, my favorite racer ever is F Zero GX, and I would love to throw my money at Nintendo to get a genuine sequel or updated version to that. Crash team racing Nitro fueled is also outstanding. Point being, while there other great racers out there, I think we all owe our respect and appreciation to Mario Kart for laying the foundation.

@@MrDrBoi Your analysis essentially explained why Nintendo can't bring back F-Zero.

51 million copies for Mario Kart 8 is insane and it's only gonna keep going up. Great video!

Mario Kart has and always will be a system seller, and Nintendo knows this. I personally am one of those buyers that always waits until the next Mario Kart drops to commit to a Nintendo system, and I wholeheartedly believe Mario Kart 8 Deluxe releasing so early in the Switch lifespan helped propel that console to its juggernaut status. I don't think its position as a consistent seller is guaranteed though. Mario Kart 8 at time of release was unquestionably the best the series had ever been (whereas DS and Wii and 7 had some low points), and I'm legitimately unsure where the series could go from here.

It's not only that the games have sold more it's how relevant the game series is today
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is still being updated at least until late 2024 with new versions of older tracks or just randomly new tracks and the original was released on the Wii U in 2013 and 8 Deluxe is the #1 best selling Mario Kart and #1 Switch game sold
meanwhile other games in the genre haven't had a #1 best sold on it's system since the 90's and 2000's Mario Kart is an extremely consistent video game series becoming even more consistent now

Yeah, relevancy is a huge part of the sustained success for sure. I imagine for a majority of people it is the old racing game they know.

I personally don't separate Mario Kart as it's own brand. It's simply part of the overall Mario brand. Also I think Mario Kart 9 will surpass 8 because we have been waiting for 9 for a long time now

Mario Kart 9 needs to be on the next console though, and it needs to do *a lot* to compete with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
If MK9 released for Switch, loads of people would say "why pay for this when I have 96 tracks on MK8D?" I think MK9 in general has a lot to live up to, and it'll be an uphill battle to maintain the series dominance.

I wish there was a way to verify the profit margins for the Namco arcade Mario Kart entries. Since there have been at least 4 of them, I imagine people still drop quarters into them.
Though I imagine Mario Kart Tour isn't nearly as viral as something like Pokemon Go.
