  • A much requested topic - we are going to dive into the waters of when British Rail ran boats (ships) in the form of British Rail Shipping and International Services, then Sealink UK, then Sealink British Ferries, then Stena Sealink Line, then Stena Line, then... Well, you get the picture. We'll try to demystify things.
If you like boats (ships), arguably the trains of the sea, then this is the episode for you!

Loved the very early roll-on roll-off train ferry. Always game to be a guest.

Sorry to have missed this one - working in the marine industry, as well as being a rail enthusiast, this is a bit of a collision of interests for me. There's a lot of interesting naval architecture that goes into train ferries; ships like carrying trains about as much as trains like going on ships!
It's interesting to note that the 'Caledonian' bit of Caledonian MacBrayne actually goes back to the Caledonian Railway - and the PS Waverley was built by the LNER. All those Scottish railway stations conveniently adjacent to ferry terminals are part of a very old vertically-integrated transport system.

I think the 1016 on the front of the Thumper is a pre-tops set number. The Southern Region used them on multiple units and suburban & push-pull coach sets, it might have been a holdover from the Southern Railway.

It's the original number of the unit pre-TOPS

The squiggly gold maggot logo thing looks kind of like the Royal Navy lieutenant rank insignia.

As an island surrounded by lots of smaller islands, I think boats/ ferries should be much better integrated with trains than they currently are. Rail Sail thankfully exists but should be much better promoted, especially for Ireland, Northern Ireland and the Netherlands. I am not sure if the various Scottish ferries have any integrated ticketing with rail at all, the same with services to Calais, Roscoff and Santander from Portsmouth or Plymouth. Newcastle lost its ferry to Norway years ago. Last Autumn, I found it was possible to have a combined rail and hovercraft ticket to go to Ryde, Isle of Wight and the speed of the hovercraft (crossed in just 10 minutes when Wightlink takes 22 to 40 minutes depending on the service!) meant it was a suitable daytrip from London. A special bus included with the ticket is timed for both the trains arrival at Portsmouth and Southsea and the vessel at Southsea Hoverport Terminal, which made the journey pretty decent on the connections side. Surprisingly it also accepted railcards making it not so expensive at £36 return for everything, it gave an idea of what is possible when the different modes are made to work together, instead of competing with each other. Apparently hovercrafts used to go from Dover or Folkestone to Calais and branded as Seaspeed, I wonder how much faster they are than the ferries on offer now? Ferries are very slow. And yeah we have Eurostar now but tbh it has been squandered, last I used it, it was cramped and very expensive and the way it's ticketed makes it a bit useless if you don't live in the southeast, LNER seem to be copying them and making any flexibility a robbery! It leaves a lot to be desired. If trains and ferries hope to win people over from flying and driving, they need to be more convenient, cheaper and just integrated. London's Thames Clippers are pretty successful for leisure and even commuting now because of the way fares have been worked out. It goes to show, transport is like a tool, none of them are truly good for every possible journey but are good at the specific things they do, which makes the dominance of driving even more frustrating. Most of my family love driving but every one of them said if the trains were better and more affordable, they would use them. And funny you mention Motorail at the start, they thought such a service would be great for the long crosscountry journeys as driving all day is tiring and the service would bring the best of train and car. Amtrak runs such a service from just outside of Washington DC to Florida. Also, not sure if people were aware but when British Rail was first nationalised, they also inherited the rail hotels often above the big terminus stations (eg St Pancras, Lime Street), hotels are another thing I wish were more integrated with trains. Nothing better than staying somewhere near to frequent buses and trains.

The commentary sounds like a rambling, unprepared ad-lib. It could easily have been condensed to 20 minutes.

Sealink always reminds me of the TV series Bergerac. A Sealink ferry with the BR double arrow appeared in the opening credits for a good number of years after it had been privatised. I do also remember travelling on a Sealink Stena Line ferry, Pride of Dover, while on a school trip in the early ‘90s. Had a very tasty cooked breakfast.
