While the social commentary about the ruthlessness of capitalism are obvious, there is more to the series, Squid Game, so let's take a look and come to a better understanding about what Squid Game teaches us about human nature, incentives and the meaning of life.

I just finished watching it. And although the violence and blood made me extremely uncomfortable, the storyline and the psychology of the characters needed to discussed further which is how I got to this video

My favorite scene has got to be where gi-hun lays next to his mother. You expect him to cry or scream over her death, but he’s so emotionally worn out that he just lays there. God it’s so beautiful
The front man also described the game as "egalitarian" ostensibly everyone gets treated the same but the rigors of the game alter how you treat the elderly, women, and migrant workers

@@niko-ni6ps once one of the guys actually could distinguish the glass from one another and determine which panels where safe (solving the challenge through merit instead of guessing and dying), the Frontman dimmed the lights to stop him because the guys with the golden masks told him to, cheating the contestants by moving the goal posts cause they're winning.
Basically, the guys with the money can change the rules whenever they want to make things more fun for them, yet they can kill you if you break the rules. They're hypocrites, they should hold that L if/when someone can solve the problem.
Here is my interpretation:
The old man was guilty on how he made money throughout his life. Therefore, he wanted to proof that everyone is equally bad in order to relief his own guilt before he died. That's the real purposes of the games; the games are not just for entertainment. Yet, the main character has changed the old man's view and showed him that humanity still exists. Yet, sacrifice has boundary. The main character is willing to sacrifice the money, but not his life, for preserving integrity.
I think its more that the old man represents the capitalist ruling class, the people with real power have a dim view of human nature ( as is the homless man at the end), as it justifies their reasons to expolit and increase wealth no matter the human consequence, people need controlling as given the chance they will end up killing and robbing each other hence they need leaders and 'owners' to rule over them.

@@johnnyjohnson947 Exactly this, no disrespect to the Original commenter, but it’s mind boggling how people still try to sympathize with the old man. Maybe it goes to show how brainwashed we are into thinking the ruling class are humans like this and share the same feelings and “potential” empathy as us, which would be true, except you can’t ignore the class differences between us and them. The capitalist class has long since alienated itself from the rest of humanity, no matter how hard people like bezos and musk try to appeal to the masses, they will never genuinely feel what it’s like to live life under a capitalist society that always undermines your efforts and work when your purpose in life is to live content and happy with your family and surroundings, rather than constantly seek profit.
Even when the old man forced himself to be in the position of the average working class person, he was still more privileged and indirectly cheated his way into survival til the end. And a perfect way to demonstrate this is when the fights break out in the room, he immediately gets on top of everyone else, fearing for his life (which i believe was a genuine expression of fear, it wasn’t him pretending to be someone else) so much so, that the frontman force stopped the fighting as soon as the old man called out for help.
The old man, never once in the entire competition felt sympathy towards anyone, he treated everyone as disposable, despite the fact he could’ve ended everything right there and then, but didn’t. I hope people stop misinterpreting the show and stop sugarcoating the class conflict in the show.

I found his character very interesting and heartwarming in a way.
Although he wasn’t content with his life, he wanted others to see that even with the money guilt will hold them back and they would still feel in discontent.
It was more of an experiment, and a way for people that are watching to learn that the journey is more than the end result, and also helping people and empathy plays a big part as to why he wanted to show the majority of people don’t have a good heart.
The last scene he was in played a big part in that, and whether he saw the homeless man being helped or not, it showed that there is still signs of humanity left.
So honestly, it felt like a mixture of an experiment and content for himself since he didn’t enjoy his life until it came down to his life.
It was a learning curve for the other characters like #456.
It showed the lack of empathy in some characters during the squid games like the doctor and homeboy with the glasses, this is because their incentive was the prize money and they did anything they could to gain the advantage.
However, with that advantage they felt guilt, mostly seen with the man with glasses and #456.
The difference between #456 and the man with glasses acknowledged his guilt but it was never enough to effect him, as opposed to #456 he acknowledged his guilt but he felt bad and was effected when he cheated il-nam.
I think it’s more to il nam than just being evil for the sake of it, he taught a lesson to the viewers and to #456.
Humanity, kindness, empathy, it’s important.
And although il-nam made a game that involved killing and death, he did it for fun, because living can be full of regrets and you only get one life on earth so you can miss out on the fun.

I find it curious how netflix would fund a show with this subject type, i think its well made and the themes are resonating with ppl to such a degree that its been so popular. ' In a time of universal deciet, telling the truth is a revolutionary act' .... so i feel that its striking a chord with so many ppl talks more to the state of culture currently than to the gravity of the themes, but nonetheless its great to see something that has substance and is not treating the viewer like a moron. I agree with you tht there seems to be a sugar coating of the themes in certain parts of the press, like they are saying its a commentary on the debt problem in s. Korea, even though the vips were all forign and from different countries, done imo to portray a globalist group with their countries of origin being of lesser importance.I liked your assesment, some great points made.
This analysis reminds of Japan and Korea two countries that have high number of suicidal rate. Instead of focusing on finding what true happiness in life is, most of them only focus on being rich and how much money will they gain which makes them feel miserable and stress, but not just in these two countries but this apply to other people out there who focus on momentarily pleasure called money.
Just to remind you guys, people overrate the value of money, well yes money is substantial to our life, but it isn't our everything. Sure we may be able to buy many things using it specially food, medicine, and water but if we're talking about love, trust, friendship and happiness, money is just another piece of paper with writings on it...

@@Its_Asteria Front man stopped the fighting among participants and opened the lights of chamber after noticing the high temperature of old man while he did nothing to stop earlier fights. This gave an idea there was some kind of favour against old man.
The old man no, but the brother being the front man was really obvious from the beginning, because having one person mysteriously disappeared and misterious frontman was too much of a coincidence
i knew the detective's brother is the front man; after the police officer of the detective found his brother's name amongs the winner's list of 2016; without any trace of him in the Outside world!; but i could never guess that the old man is the inventor of the games!; mind blowing.

I agree and disagree at the same time. I think in exteme circumstances such as war, poverty, genocide, imprisonment, etc.. people must force themselves into animal instincts to survive. Morals are for humans, its foolish to get angry at a lion for eating a baby zebra. The lion is not feeling guilty, just munches on its bones, it will even kill lion cubs. When humans turn into animals, they do what they need to do.
But where I agree is that most people resort to being animals without justified extreme circumstances. Like black friday sale at the mall is not reason enough to be an animal. The social norms, rules, judgement, laws all apply.
@@dwaynejpeterkin Don't watch too much movie and series. In case of life and death, almost all will cling to life because it's in your biology to survive. Until and unless it's family and very dear ones, no one is losing life for a stranger like in this game. The way Ali was treated reflected this perfectly. Kindness is not rewarded and you shouldn't be kind just to get a reward. We should do good things just we want to not because we want good things to happen to us. Took me some time to figure this out.
Great review. I hated those reaction vids where they say the participants had a choice when there was actually no choice for them. How fair and equal is playing tug of war when you're a woman or old man? I mean weak? Is that really fair? When the players figured out how to cross the bridge, the front man who was talking about fairness all the time turned off the lights. Is that fair? Sang Woo thinks he was alive only because he worked so hard and others are dead because they are not as smart, but was it really? People who we thought must have done wrong things and deserved bad situations, could just be unlucky or was born with poor conditions. It's like they just got the bad starting point to play and chose the wrong step on the bridge when others got the good starting point and chose the right step by luck. Also, about the players coming back knowing they could die. Does that make their deaths suicides? Think about why a sucide is also called the social murder. Unlike most other famous death games, in this show, players are not killed directly by other players at least during the games. They are mostly killed by the authorities as the result of losing the cruel life games. That's telling us something. These are the questions director is throwing at us and not many reviewers seem to get it.
The games are not forced. It's their choice to return. They did. This shows you that a lot of these participants didn't learn even in the face of death. They're willing to face death rather than return home and make a difference. This is why for me I can't feel bad for most except a few(Ali was cheated by his boss and pickpocket girl was cheated by the trafficker). The rest knew the end game. They returned.
@@hangguy209 but the only reason they returned it because the world outside of squid game was just as bad for them. But at least in the games they had a chance of winning, when outside there was no hope at all.

Very good. One detail that you might be interested in is the title of the last episode. It is a title of book, which is a required reading for Korean H.S. it is a commentary of what being too poor in society does. Book is about a couple who is very poor, and wife who is malnourished. One day wife tells her husband to not goto work.. but it was a day when he could earn some good money to feed her, so he leaves and works the entire day, and when coming back he buys wife's favorite food she wanted... but subconsciously he feels that his wife is dead. This is what happened with #456. He gets a hint that his mom is not responding to calls... but he had won...

I mean that’s the problem with w “free will” because they were essentially coerced into it.
The devil shows up as everything you wanted and in the end you sell your soul for it. So while yes you have the money and whatever else you wanted, it’s still meaningless and your life is still empty and that’s what we see at the end of the show.
Was it worth it? Clearly not for him . And I think that says a lot about his character. Because had it been the girl who won she would have actually made some good use of the money and she woulda had her family back. Cuz that’s just the kind of person she was before the money. Same w the businessman: bet he woulda lost it all in poor investments once again.
If you’re empty and lacking purpose and meaning before the money, it ain’t gonna change it once the money comes in. We can see that for him it was more about the THRILL of gambling. That’s what really put a smile on his face. The fact he won! So even when he got robbed by the pickpocket he just found another way to gamble his life away. It was never about the money for him. It wasn’t about having enough to provide for his daughter so he could finally be a good dad. Unfortunately. The money changed nothing for him. But the game, the experience he had, that’s what mattered to him. Just like the old man said: it was a nice experience . I’m not surprised he turned around and went back. He was never gonna be a father cuz that’s just not who he is. Even with all the money in the world

You know when you are in english class and as a class are annotating a book so it suddenly becomes more interesting this video was exactly that

Sangwoo was ready for war. He saw the games as war. Now in war you have your own countrymen you never betray but in this game, your own friends are your enemy, because only one can win. I dont like what sangwoo did, morally he is deplorable without a doubt. But like war, squid game is hell, morals are out. Ruthlessness is the way you play, if you're not willing to go all out ruthless, then you should have never reentered the game. The only moral dilemma was to enter the game in the first place, once you agreed to play you agreed to kill, thus no other moral dilemmas are to be considered, you need to be in war mode. I dont see many critize other characters when they were killing their opponents in tug of war by tugging harder and win. Is it less evil, less sinful, less wrong if murder is that of a stranger or if it's someone close to you?

This analysis, very strategically, avoids most if not all of the anti capitalist notions of the show
well, the show is as much a critic on capitalism as of communism or any other apparent egualitarian system - which is really authoritarian.

I also found that pretty bizarre lol. I mean, all art is open to interpretation but I think the anti-capitalist messaging is really heavy handed if you know what to look for. I mean, Gi-hun literally has a PTSD flashback of when cops killed his coworker at a strike (which was inspired by the real-life Ssangyong motors strike in South Korea, where a union literally fought the police after being mistreated by their employers) and the VIPs very obviously represent the worlds billionaires who make the rules others have to play by. At least in the case of the US, and I’m sure South Korea, government corruption is rampant and corporations more or less game the system so that they will always come out on top, no matter what, leaving very little true opportunity for working class people, who fight each other in order to survive instead of fixing their anger at the ones puppeteering the whole thing.

I had not heard of this show until watching a random SNL skit, I don't watch regular programming for years now, I know Hunger Games, and Lost ( just plain stopped watching lost for the weirdness. I've never seen one episode of Game of Thrones, all the witch ones, or werewolves. I was thinking this was a real lottery of some kind in a digital sense...
Never watched it. But I will now.
The ironic thing about all this is that we only need to eat, a warm place to sleep, and antibiotics. But we always want more or things that are worthless like a fast car or an expensive house. But life is painful and money makes it less painful. We could pay for hospitalization when sick. We can pay for oxygen when we can’t breath. It’s about pain and suffering and money makes it less painful.
A fast car or an expensive house is only "worthless" if you make it that way. The biggest limiting thing in life is time. If someone wants to spend that limited time in a fast car or expensive house, who are you to tell them it's worthless. People who fixate on how others spent their life are often some of the unhappiest people in life..

One thing I didn’t quite understand is how the brother ended up being the front man???
Because early in the show we see the cop going to his apartment cuz his mother says she hasn’t seen him around in a few days and that he disappeared and the landlord says he’s behind on rent and he’s got one of those cards in his bookshelf, so the whole time the show is alluding to him having been one of the recent players that went missing for a few days. But clearly we see he was a player in 2015 and won. So like... none of that shit adds up to me and the show didn’t really explain it and I’m and abt it. And the cop brother asked “why?” Just before dying and THAS WHAT ID LIKE TO KNOW!!! The fact they never explained that is so annoying. How does one become frontman? Why? Why didn’t he just go live his life with the prize money?? Etc cmon I NEED ANSWRS!!
So I believe that if you win the game you have a chance to become front man.And obviously the VIPs and the front men are very evil, watching many people fight to the death, and we see at the end that the main character died his hair red which is symbolism and I believe in the second season the main character will be part of the VIPs or the front man because at the start he was a good guy and he got so caught up in the game and he had forgotten about his daughter and he was thinking about the game instead of his daughter. You need to read this article I’m about to send, it explains it completely. It’s actually messed up how much they manipulate us.

In the essence it's painful to see that people are willing to bet their own lives on the line, only to have tiny chance of getting rid of their financial problems. Sort of depicts how root of all evil in our world is money. People really falling so far into the debt that they cant function as humans anymore, only mere ghosts to society and their own loved ones. Just sad.

The whole concept of the game being “fair” is so contradictory. The creator being in the game with no stakes, the “everyone is equal except here’s a game where teams with strength end up winning except the team with the creator who knows strategies and even then they only won thanks to a last minute trick that wouldint have been there without the old man stalling most likely. Then the glass game with going first. Dosent matter if the numbers are blind it’s not an equal opportunity when you have a 2 to the power of thousands of getting across vs everyone else

He's not a very complex character
I mean even when was it fare, the old man was protected through the red green light. So this shows the hypocrisy of the game organizers. The rules are only for the poor, but not the rich. I found it on the same lines on parasite movie.
