The story line is (for those that don't understand it correctly, I know it can be confusing) The parents have gotten divorced and the mother has moved into a new house, you can tell from the boxes strewn around the house. The mother abuses alcohol and is fighting for custody of the child and the father and child protection services are watching her and keeping tabs on her. They probably know that she is a drunk and they are concerned for the child's safety. When the mother answers the door at the start of the game its the father. The mum won't let him into the house. He brought the bear. The child imagines the bear is alive and is a source of comfort. The phone ringing is child protection services saying that they and the father will be calling to the house the next day. The majority of the game is all in his imagination. The monster is his mother when she is drunk as she abuses him. The child collects the memories because he wants to remember his mother when she was kind. The ending is the father and the CPS arriving to check on the mother. They notice that the child is injured ( providing proof that they mother is abusing him) the child is most likely now given to his father and the mother is probably given help.

I love the way you go into the closet. When you close the doors, it becomes a massive weird place. But as soon as the door opens, and the light is on, it's just an empty, small closet. Really shows how the imagination of a child can make anything strange.
Same can be said for the stuff in the rooms or the layout of the house. While you know it and it's everyday stuff. The child might see it as something far different.
This was clever. I was expecting some kind of drunken, abusive father. I saw all the drawings of the little kid being attacked by a monster, plus all the bottles of booze. Combined with the sad looking mother on her own, I thought it was going to be a crazy father. But then I started to notice things about the monster. It looked kind of... feminine. With the long hair and everything. The drawings also had long hair, and the screams were high pitched. I started to think otherwise, and the end of the game proved me right. Was still brilliantly executed.

Ok so here's my theory: *SPOILER* This 2 year old's parents went through a messy divorce. In the beginning you can see a wedding ring tan line on the mothers hand. This divorce may have led to an alcoholic addiction due to depression and perhaps a struggle with custody rights ("I'll never let him take you away from me"). The monster is his drunk and angry mother, while the good memories seep through. In the end, I think the father either wins custody or the kid is sent to a foster home.
Well don't forget, in the final segment there's a different monster that, instead of wanting to be left alone by the child, is actively looking for him/her. My belief? The father is also one of the monsters. Why? You decide.

He only has white eyes because the child forgot what his fathers face looks like. See, the mother (or swamp monster) doesnt get the child when shes walking around, only when she sees him. But the coat monster actively tries to look for the child, that being a reason why the dad usually always comes to the mothers house, to try to take you from the alcoholic mother.
People are forgetting there are two separate monsters. One is the mother, the wild haired swamp creature and the coat monster. I believe that the two monsters represents *both* parents not just one. I believe the problem relies solely on the mother but the monsters are two different deties. 1:15:15 Has drawings of both monsters with a globe between them. 1:32:06 There picture of a man and a woman with a child in between them. Like the mother, while the child feels some good feelings towards its father (teddy) it also remembers bad things too. You hear muffled shouting and slamming doors. The kid knows *something* wants him but doesn't understand what. The coat figure has no face because the kid doesn't remember its dads face. The monsters act differently too, the swamp monster wants to be left alone while the coat monster is actively looking for you. But does this mean I think that the mum is right? No. I think the dad was right in taking the child. There are several scenarios in this game that hints that the kid has been placed in realistic dangerous situations (like opening knife drawers, crawling through glass). I just think its all grey and not black and white, since its clear the mother loves her child but shes just a bad caretaker and I think at the end she realises that.
I think the drawing at 1:15:15 represents his mother before she gets drunk is a completely different person than his mother, the drunk monster. The globe represents how the two are "a world apart." Notice at the end when teddy's arm is ripped off, the coat monster is the one who ripped it, and in the end it was the mother who had the teddy bear. Or maybe the coat represents the father's leaving and not coming back, because people put on coats when they leave.

Matthew cass I was reading other comments and they were saying that the mother runs out of alcohol and leaves the house to go to the liquor store some time during the night and puts on her coat and the coat monster is the same monster at the mother.
This game hits close to home for me. My mom was a drinker for a long time and every time she went through a divorce she just drank more. She's been through three divorces now and almost every night is a drunken argument, trying to reason with the unreasonable. This led to hard drugs which led to no money until the next paycheck. Still can't say I'm clean.. The craving is still there. But working long hours trying to get away is the only thing keeping me going. If you're in a similar situation and younger than me, believe me it's only going to get tougher. They'll tell you they are going to quit and that they will go to rehab or see a counselor for help, but it is usually a lie. The truth is most people don't recover from these things. But don't do what I did, just hang in there and get out.

Somehow this reminded me of "Pan's Labyrinth". Maybe more like the baby version. It was so sad. The baby tried to collect the good memories of its mom in a dreamish state, in a beautiful home suddenly collapsing by an overburdened and lonely mom. Lots of great messages in this game, This game every parent should consider playing before setting a young into the world heh.

What if she kidnaps the baby and you play as the father and now you have to find your son? Or the mother drugs the father and kidnaps the kid. Now you and teddy have to escape your mom's house of horror again. I know its dark but this game is pretty dark.
I really love the atmosphere of this game. Even most of the audio in the background of the game is something that would probably scare a child (obviously besides the ones that would make an adult freak shit) like boards creaking in the night and various other sounds ( I got scared to shit when that kind of stuff happened to me as a kid too ) . It's also kind of symbolic that in the beginning of the game, nothing is really a threat to you, or atleast that's how i see it,which kind of reflects on child hood memories of how the things that we were scared of were just imaginary or nothing we should be afraid of. Or maybe I'm over thinking this, but still, this game is great.
I suspected that the mother was the monster as soon as I saw that it had feminine features - more specifically, the long hair. Given that the person at the door in the beginning had a male's voice, I figured it couldn't have been him if the monster was female. I also figured it would've made a decent twist to the story. Of course, what really struck that thought home was the whole scene with the baby chasing his mother around in a pitch-dark room with lights only striking a single area at a time. Her vague threats about how they both wouldn't like it if mommy was angry, not to mention she practically changed into the monster right in front of us during that scene. Looking through the comments, I'm surprised there were some people who couldn't figure that out after watching that.
At 1:59 it sounds like the dad said, "I'm not allowed to give her that?" I assume he's talking about giving the teddy bear to the child but I thought it was a boy.

I think the bright light is more like salvation. Being lifted from a very extreme and dark situation where he could have been killed.

There are very few games that do so well with true psychological horror alone. The power of the mind combined with the world seen through the eyes of someone who literally cannot comprehend what he sees is very tricky to 'translate' into such a medium. That said, after watching this video I have to say Among the Sleep pulls it off brilliantly. First they appeal to your parental instincts (who doesn't immediately want to keep the child protagonist safe?), the sudden loss of your cute NPC companion (the teddy bear) and then yanking the rug out from under everything you thought you knew with the twist ending and a 'monster' who really isn't. A tearjerking job well done.
Its very sad that alot of babys have to suffer this... I'm saying this, since that my mother is the director of an orphanage. I had lived all my life with childrens and baby's that got away from their family for this type of things... And i always have to see the bruises of the kids when i help to recive them... It brakes my hearth.... In this moment, a new baby came, and he had his little leg broken, i take care of him when i finish school or when the workers need help... Its just so sad... :(
So were the events in the game a dramatization, reality, or completely fictional? It's hard to say, some parts seem way too fantastic to have any real life equivalents, and some parts just don't make sense (the crib falling over in the beginning, I doubt the mother would do that herself if she wants the baby to "get away from her") I feel like the whole thing is more about the child coming to terms with what's going on around him than anything. The memories appear to be "safe havens" where the child can hide in mentally while the terror of what's actually happening occurs around him. In the game he collects these memories and uses them to unlock a big door in a playhouse. I believe the playhouse represents his mind, and putting the memories in those little contraptions represents the child putting aside the "good" memories of his mother to see her for what she really is. Teddy's arm being the key that unlocks the vault door could represent the act of the child's mother ripping off teddy's arm the nail in the coffin which allows the child to realize that his mother really isn't fit for parenting, and that allows him to accept his dad as his new parent.
This game has been sitting on my wishlist for a long time as I wasn’t sure I really wanted it. But now that I’ve seen this I think I’ll finally get it. And it’s on sale right now which is even better.

There are few people whose commentary enhances ANY gameplay (though they do exist) and there are some games like this where a silent player-character is actually essential.
I think the worst thing is that this isn’t happening to an adult, or kid, but a literal baby. Imagine being born then 12 months into your adventure into life, you’re facing sleep paralysis demons with a teddy bear.
I know a lot of u guys are confused so I will tell you what is happening. The baby is abused by the mom and the mom is an achoholic (sorry I spelled that wrong) and the dad wants the baby but the mom doesn't want to give him the baby. Also, the baby imagines that the teddy bear is real. And the baby imagines that the bear is the dad helping him get to the dad, if that makes any sense. Also, the mom is the creepy monster. I've always loved this game Edit: I'll explain it to some people so basically the baby has the teddy that the father gave to him(and no the father is not connected to the teddy at all sorry) and that's why you heard the shouting and after the divorce the mother started drinking and when she got frustrated she turned into the monster and lost control and the reason that everytime u die you wake up in ur room is cause the monster(the mother) puts u back in ur crib also the reason the mother put teddy in the washing machine is cause she is trying to get rid of teddy also if u go to the museum u get a close up of all the characters and u get the cut out ending of the teddy becoming possessed but back to the game basically u start to see memories to help u figure out what happened and as the game continues u start to notice things and fond things out to help u in the game and the mother starts to follow u and u have to go to different places I'll edit more now in a minute

I don't think it was just a drinking problem, considering the intro with her screaming at someone. And I suppose it is to do with the issues with family for a young child or baby and how it can affect them being amplified by the child's mental state. Since the baby was only young, it was more prone to experiencing fear due to it's young mind. Add to that issues with the parents, and this can create unusual feelings and such for the child, as the imagination of the child can make events seem for scary and monstrous.
OHHHH I GET IT! This is the story of a divorced couple, it was the moms turn to have the baby, but when the dad came back she wouldn't let him have the baby, to cool off she used beer and whine, she became angry under all the stress.
when i was 2 my mother was ill like this but not alcoholic, mentall illness. i used to crawl upto the attic where there was a closet fake wall and sit there with my blanket and stuffed animals and doll in the pitch black behind the sliding door just listening to her down stairs because i was terrified of her. i would create imaginary friends in the dark and fall asleep there in my hiding place till my father came home. i was terrified of my mother she killed my brother and tried to drown me too. she later was put in a mental hospital. i still feel save in the dark where no one can see me. this game made me cry but was amazing to watch thank u
It's really refreshing to see a game where the protagonist isn't just some gun- or scanner-wielding guy. But while the concept was really good, the delivery was a little half-baked. It bothered me how 85% of the sounds were not related to any kind of enemy -- just sounds meant to creep you out, which gets annoying when you hear them so often. Also the levels were kind of long and repetitive, and it took forever to actually see an enemy. I guess the ending helps make up for that since it reveals the whole thing was about child abuse; it's always good to touch on touchy subjects and all that.
I was so obsessed with this game as a kid, and it still holds up even now. Such a unique, creative concept that has a lot of all-too-real elements. This game means so much to me.

What the fuck did I just see? This game is simply...amazing. Yeah, it's a bit unsettling because it's from a child's POV, but wow...just....amazing. Who would have known a game that basically simulates the symptoms of psychosis could be fun! XD

The story and symbolism of this game reminds me of Silent Hill, which I love all the symbolism of Silent Hill. And the Style of the game reminds me of Alice: Madness returns. How things from IRL are spotted across all stages but still have their own identity. And the Gameplay reminds me of the Amnesia Series. Its seriously as if Silent Hill, Alice and Amnesia had a threesome and ACTUALLY had a baby. (pun intended).

No. I think the dad was right in taking the child. There are several scenarios in this game that hints that the kid has been placed in realistic dangerous situations (like opening knife drawers, crawling through glass). I just think its all grey and not black and white, since its clear the mother loves her child but shes just a bad caretaker and I think at the end she realises that.
I think the drawing at 1:15:15 represents his mother before she gets drunk is a completely different person than his mother, the drunk monster. The globe represents how the two are "a world apart." Notice at the end when teddy's arm is ripped off, the coat monster is the one who ripped it, and in the end it was the mother who had the teddy bear.
Or maybe the coat represents the father's leaving and not coming back, because people put on coats when they leave.

This game hits close to home for me. My mom was a drinker for a long time and every time she went through a divorce she just drank more. She's been through three divorces now and almost every night is a drunken argument, trying to reason with the unreasonable. This led to hard drugs which led to no money until the next paycheck. Still can't say I'm clean.. The craving is still there. But working long hours trying to get away is the only thing keeping me going. If you're in a similar situation and younger than me, believe me it's only going to get tougher. They'll tell you they are going to quit and that they will go to rehab or see a counselor for help, but it is usually a lie. The truth is most people don't recover from these things. But don't do what I did, just hang in there and get out.

Somehow this reminded me of "Pan's Labyrinth". Maybe more like the baby version. It was so sad. The baby tried to collect the good memories of its mom in a dreamish state, in a beautiful home suddenly collapsing by an overburdened and lonely mom. Lots of great messages in this game, This game every parent should consider playing before setting a young into the world heh.

I really love the atmosphere of this game. Even most of the audio in the background of the game is something that would probably scare a child (obviously besides the ones that would make an adult freak shit) like boards creaking in the night and various other sounds ( I got scared to shit when that kind of stuff happened to me as a kid too ) . It's also kind of symbolic that in the beginning of the game, nothing is really a threat to you, or atleast that's how i see it,which kind of reflects on child hood memories of how the things that we were scared of were just imaginary or nothing we should be afraid of. Or maybe I'm over thinking this, but still, this game is great.

Plot twist: the baby was probably born with a perfect mind
I suspected that the mother was the monster as soon as I saw that it had feminine features - more specifically, the long hair. Given that the person at the door in the beginning had a male's voice, I figured it couldn't have been him if the monster was female. I also figured it would've made a decent twist to the story.
Of course, what really struck that thought home was the whole scene with the baby chasing his mother around in a pitch-dark room with lights only striking a single area at a time. Her vague threats about how they both wouldn't like it if mommy was angry, not to mention she practically changed into the monster right in front of us during that scene. Looking through the comments, I'm surprised there were some people who couldn't figure that out after watching that.

There are very few games that do so well with true psychological horror alone. The power of the mind combined with the world seen through the eyes of someone who literally cannot comprehend what he sees is very tricky to 'translate' into such a medium. That said, after watching this video I have to say Among the Sleep pulls it off brilliantly. First they appeal to your parental instincts (who doesn't immediately want to keep the child protagonist safe?), the sudden loss of your cute NPC companion (the teddy bear) and then yanking the rug out from under everything you thought you knew with the twist ending and a 'monster' who really isn't. A tearjerking job well done.

So were the events in the game a dramatization, reality, or completely fictional? It's hard to say, some parts seem way too fantastic to have any real life equivalents, and some parts just don't make sense (the crib falling over in the beginning, I doubt the mother would do that herself if she wants the baby to "get away from her")
I feel like the whole thing is more about the child coming to terms with what's going on around him than anything. The memories appear to be "safe havens" where the child can hide in mentally while the terror of what's actually happening occurs around him. In the game he collects these memories and uses them to unlock a big door in a playhouse. I believe the playhouse represents his mind, and putting the memories in those little contraptions represents the child putting aside the "good" memories of his mother to see her for what she really is. Teddy's arm being the key that unlocks the vault door could represent the act of the child's mother ripping off teddy's arm the nail in the coffin which allows the child to realize that his mother really isn't fit for parenting, and that allows him to accept his dad as his new parent.

There are few people whose commentary enhances ANY gameplay (though they do exist) and there are some games like this where a silent player-character is actually essential.
I think the worst thing is that this isn’t happening to an adult, or kid, but a literal baby. Imagine being born then 12 months into your adventure into life, you’re facing sleep paralysis demons with a teddy bear.

Also, the baby imagines that the teddy bear is real. And the baby imagines that the bear is the dad helping him get to the dad, if that makes any sense. Also, the mom is the creepy monster. Edit: I'll explain it to some people so basically the baby has the teddy that the father gave to him(and no the father is not connected to the teddy at all sorry) and that's why you heard the shouting and after the divorce the mother started drinking and when she got frustrated she turned into the monster and lost control and the reason that everytime u die you wake up in ur room is cause the monster(the mother) puts u back in ur crib also the reason the mother put teddy in the washing machine is cause she is trying to get rid of teddy also if u go to the museum u get a close up of all the characters and u get the cut out ending of the teddy becoming possessed but back to the game basically u start to see memories to help u figure out what happened and as the game continues u start to notice things and fond things out to help u in the game and the mother starts to follow u and u have to go to different places I'll edit more now in a minute

I don't think it was just a drinking problem, considering the intro with her screaming at someone.
And I suppose it is to do with the issues with family for a young child or baby and how it can affect them being amplified by the child's mental state. Since the baby was only young, it was more prone to experiencing fear due to it's young mind. Add to that issues with the parents, and this can create unusual feelings and such for the child, as the imagination of the child can make events seem for scary and monstrous.
And the guy at the end must have been CPS.

when i was 2 my mother was ill like this but not alcoholic, mentall illness. i used to crawl upto the attic where there was a closet fake wall and sit there with my blanket and stuffed animals and doll in the pitch black behind the sliding door just listening to her down stairs because i was terrified of her. i would create imaginary friends in the dark and fall asleep there in my hiding place till my father came home. i was terrified of my mother she killed my brother and tried to drown me too. she later was put in a mental hospital. i still feel save in the dark where no one can see me. this game made me cry but was amazing to watch thank u

It's really refreshing to see a game where the protagonist isn't just some gun- or scanner-wielding guy. But while the concept was really good, the delivery was a little half-baked. It bothered me how 85% of the sounds were not related to any kind of enemy -- just sounds meant to creep you out, which gets annoying when you hear them so often. Also the levels were kind of long and repetitive, and it took forever to actually see an enemy. I guess the ending helps make up for that since it reveals the whole thing was about child abuse; it's always good to touch on touchy subjects and all that.

What the fuck did I just see? This game is simply...amazing. Yeah, it's a bit unsettling because it's from a child's POV, but wow...just....amazing. Who would have known a game that basically simulates the symptoms of psychosis could be fun! XD

The story and symbolism of this game reminds me of Silent Hill, which I love all the symbolism of Silent Hill. And the Style of the game reminds me of Alice: Madness returns. How things from IRL are spotted across all stages but still have their own identity. And the Gameplay reminds me of the Amnesia Series. Its seriously as if Silent Hill, Alice and Amnesia had a threesome and ACTUALLY had a baby. (pun intended).
