Oh lord, I just love your down to earth view on this subject. I could not count the times I have listened to an artist's explanation of their work and thought, "What? What does that even mean...what a load of made up nonsense." You always have a way of expressing things so practically, honestly, and clearly. Thank you for the constant inspiration, David.
This video is less than 5 minutes and I learned all I need instead of watching an 1 hour long video from an Art Professor listening to someone's opinions and filler. Thank You Mr. Kessler!
You are so polite about the art establishment so called statements! I worked in a UK Local Authority Art Gallery for a time were I used to read the statements of visiting artists, but when you actually conversed with those people their language was totally different and never used such words as printed. Summing up, I would call it pretentious art establishment crap. By the way, I love the down to earth no nonsense videos.
Brian Richardson thanks for the comment - you are exactly right. The statement is supposed to help viewers connect with your art, not alienate them from it. I appreciate you watching!
Ah it's really helpful to me, as I'm self taught Artist & applying for a competition, they've asked for Artist statement & that was nuts I wasn't finding something precise & to the point. Now I completely get that it's what actually about. Thank you for sharing. God bless you
@@davidm.kesslerfineart1717 Thank you so much means a lot. Right now struggling to write a good statement. Then I want to know how to be accepted in galleries as self taught Artist. Any key points.
Syeda Iqra Hussain don’t worry about getting into galleries. You can and will do much better selling work by yourself. There are lots of online resources that will give you what you need to know to sell your own work.
Thanks for watching Writing an Artist Statement. Leave a comment if you have written an artist statement before. Don't forget to like the video and share it with your friends. Thank you!
My thoughts and words have always tumbled around ,inside and outside ,me so fast I can never get a real grasp on them. When I paint my mind quiets and i have the ability to articulate everything Iv been desperately trying to say. Some times it’s a whisper but often it’s a scream! It’s the screams I gravitate towards the most with bold colors and expressive strokes. And as of yet Iv never ran out of things to say.
Watching this video was so helpful I love how he got right to the point and did not keep rambling on. most videos you come across they never really get to the point. So thank you so much for putting this video out I will definitely subscribe to your Channel! Have a blessed day,
Thank you! This and your Artist's Biography video are exactly what I needed to hear. I'm not an art's graduate and always find those types of artis's statements so wanky and have avoided writing a good one for myself for fear of sounding the same. Your description is perfect :)
Diane, there is a description for every video on YT. There is a small arrow on the right below the video. That drops down the description which is where you’ll find the link.
David: My art doesn't have a 'direction'. I paint abstract oil painting. I just experiment and see what happens. I love abstract art, but can't disagree with Paul Joseph Watson. Have you seen it? (so I'm still lost when it comes to a statement, not simple. I did not go to art school. )
LuckyGuu all art, regardless of what you do has some sort of process and direction. The more you can determine and define what that is the more successful you’ll be.
What do you mean 'process'? What do you mean 'direction'? These words seem abstract to me/confusing. I use a painters knife and smear paint on the canvas until it looks interesting. I don't name the paintings, which limits the viewer. When it doesn't look interesting/turns into a brown mess - I just scrape the 'gunk/mess' off and start over. I like to listen to Thai music while I paint. No, I do not speak Thai. I am clueless how to 'define' what I do. How would you define Hans Hofmann's work?
LuckyGuu I don’t have to worry about defining Hans Hoffman’s work - he did a great job of that himself-you need to read it btw. You just described your process to me. Process is simply the way you make your work-don’t over think this. Everyone’s art has a direction-you use oil paint to make abstract paintings - start there! Tone successful as a painter, you ha r to be able to describe your work to others - that is how you assist the view in connecting with your work. You should always name your paintings - titles are critical. You are giving the viewer too much credit. It’s your job as the artist to make a connection. “Untitled” will never make a connection or start a conversation about a piece of work. You need to think more like someone buying your work and less like an abstract painter!
Perhaps Hans Hofmann was a bad example. I don't think anyone except a toddler wants to hear how I 'smear' colors on canvas. I laugh when I read art reviews in the back of Art in America. My work is pure random. I don't see anything in my art, just a collection of interesting colors. There are no people or things hidden in my paintings. I think/believe I can compete with other artists I see in magazines, until I think about this statement thing. Q: What is the title of the painting behind you in this video? Thank you from Delaware.
LuckyGuu it’s all up to you - I’m just trying to help you out - if you don’t want any advice, that’s OK with me. Painting title is Alive Again - part of a series.
I had to sift through thousands of artists who had submitted work for a book. The worst part of the job was having to read artist statements. One person had an artist statement that was four pages typed of the most nonsensical word salad I have ever read.
ugh i wish my teacher could be this concise. I have to do a bunch of exercises of bullshit, and even though I have a very simple approach to art my teacher keeps pressing me for some deep philosophical reason why I make my art. hes an abstract artist and thinks everything needs to be Deep and full of bullshit.
Typical art school BS. Those guys just don’t get it. Sorry you have to go through all that. The good news is, when you get out in the real world you can do what you want! Thanks for watching!
Art school BS, I love it, at last an honest artist. I know when I read a statement full of BS like that one that all I am going to see on display is a bunch of unrelated trash taken straight out of a trash can and mounted for viewing. The only people that relate to that kind of art are idiots who have been told they are meaningful works. Never stop making your videos I love them.

Hello David, been a while, recently down in Greenville and thought of your classes. Still hammering it out, wishing you well.. thanks..
Hi Izzy, good to hear from you! You have to keep hammering, that’s what its all about. Merry Christmas my friend.
