The whole Up-B/Side-B thing has always been worse for me since Zelda is my main and accidentally using her side B has killed me a LOT due to it pointless putting you in freefall.

      Ive gone through crazy button changes and i still got use to it. I now play the default abxy setup rather than the old style i used. I may have adapted bc im younge (13 at the time) and my brain is still developing. If u r young u can do it! If you're an old people though it will take more time. I cringed as i adapted pretty much every time i played. Its so weird and annoying to get use to a new setup but it is doable if you really want to! :D

    Obviously the best controller is the Odyssey controller.
    Pros:
    -THREE control sticks
    -A reset button
    Cons:
    -When plugged in, you'll have to find an overlay of the stage you're playing.

    • @Jinnbow
      @Jinnbow 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Noah Triche For me, it's almost the exact opposite, and exactaly for the reason stated in the video, but also because I run off the ledge and use u my jump immediately, without recognizing it. As someone who plays with Tap Jump on, how do you cope with this?

    • @-Gnarlemagne
      @-Gnarlemagne 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Noah Triche Sometimes you need to get a little bit worse in order to get even better. I switched to having jump on Z and I was so bad for about a day, but I genuinely think it's one of the best decisions I ever made.

    • @metrih7
      @metrih7 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jinnbow Happened to me too. Practice paying attention specifically for the halo that appears at the beginning of the double jump. Might take some practice, but it's beneficial to realize if to keep going off stage or to retreat.

      @bbeeeper3346 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Guess it was pretty easy for that to slip by him, since even I didn't realize he missed such an important thing.

    • @-Gnarlemagne
      @-Gnarlemagne 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +William Tannery Double sticking is also completely replaceable by putting jump on a trigger button or by using claw grip, which is already optimal as it stands due to the enormous benefit you gain for buffering aerials, so if you're *really* trying to optimize your control setup, tap jump has one less benefit, making it objectively worse than tap jump off.

    • @bluetannery1527
      @bluetannery1527 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Zren I primarily use the older 3ds model, the one with one shoulder button on either side and no c-stick. It's definitely suboptimal, and whenever I use my cousins Wii u I use the classic controller.
      I forced myself to learn tap-jump off, switching from tap jump to the x button. It took like a week of consistent practice, but at this point I don't really ever know how I used tap jump at all.
      U-tilts and u-airs without doublejump are so damn useful. Imo, up-b/up-smash out of shield benefit isn't worth sacrificing u-tilts/shield wiggling/u airs.

      That would mean you would need to use the controllers either in a really weird way so your left ring finger and pinky would use the 1 and 2 buttons or your left thumb but that would mean you couldn't move.

      +cwjakesteel I'm using the pro controller, c-stick set to attack, and I do nairs by jumping with X and just hitting the c-stick with my thumb into the upper right corner. It works most of the time, I haven't practiced that much.

      The lack of ridges is good for Up Bs which can go in all directions, because it makes it easier to slight-angle.

      Something interesting to note is that bidou is not necessarily the most optimal control scheme for every character. For example: Cloud is pretty easy to do snappy movement tech with, and heavily uses aerials that require another input while bidou is active. Alternatively, some characters struggle with movement tech that is easier with bidou, but use special moves so often that having bidou active takes away the character's best moves.

      I prefer the biduo su statute with a trigger and the C stick, set to attack.
      I'm pretty new to dmash bros, so creating extreme controls that differ from the regular controls in extreme ways is easy to me to adapt to. I COULD do biduo since one of my triggers is special too, but I like tilt stick for perfect pivots and easy air space tools.
      My character is super floaty, so this is that hard to do for me

    I think the ridges on the sticks are entirely subjective: I actually dislike the ridges because 1. getting perfect directions without is actually much easier than you think and 2. the ridges make it harder to slide the stick around the edge, because of the stop a ridge attempts to do on the stick, and the lack of ridges makes it more fluid. Not to mention, I've tested; the Ryu command inputs are EXTREMELY lenient. So much that I can do a Shaku by started at back-down instead of all the way back, and do shoryus literally by just doing forward down forward.
    I like no ridges so much more.

      +Gustavo Badillo Theoretically, it's just flat-out better than not using it. In reality, a lot of players have trouble controlling it effectively, and it can also cause tendon problems. Buffered aerials are so much easier with the Pro Controller since the C-stick is right next to the trigger buttons. I like the GC controller, but having to stretch my index finger and thumb so far apart is kind of uncomfortable. Also that tid-bit at the end about removing the battery and plugging in the Pro Controller to the Wii U...can you still leave the battery in while it's plugged in to just save time from the tedious task of removing and inserting the battery? Or will it still run the risk of desyncing?

    • @moka6058
      @moka6058 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe what he meant was that people tend to forget to desync the controller before leaving which makes things complicated for other players. The only reason to remove the battery is because once you unplug the controller, it instantly switches off and hence you can't "forget" to desync. Plugging it in with the battery inside will just charge the battery while you play. The cable has no effect on the sync with or without the battery. It just powers the controller.

    For those few fellow Robin mains out there:
    Even if you set the C-stick to Attack instead of Smash, it will still use the Levin Sword for aerials if it is available. And you should always use the C-stick for off-stage Levin Sword dairs, because if you do a regular smash input, you will fastfall and not make it back; this makes the GameCube controller your optimal choice.

  • @DarkDragon2344
    @DarkDragon2344 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    For wii-mote & nunchuk I've found the most optimal setup to be as follows:
    Tap-Jump - ON
    Special Move - B
    Standard Move - A (You could swap this with special move, but you should put these two on A & B)
    Jump - A+B (Stick to tap jump only)
    Grab - C
    Shield - Z (This can be swapped with Grab, as this is more so personal preference, but you should have these 2 on Z & C)
    Tilts - D-pad (Never smash attack, it is so much easier to do a smash attack with a movement joystick than a tilt)
    Taunts - 1 & 2 (These buttons are basically unreachable, so setting them to anything practical would be a waste.
    Basically, don't use wii-mote and nunchuk if you prefer a smash stick over a tilt stick, or you prefer no tap-jump. There really is no way to fit your preference without making your gameplay worse.

    2:54 If you tilt the C Stick down, you can do instant dash attacks using Smash stick.

  • @dankayur2910
    @dankayur2910 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Little known fact: you can smash the Gamecube C-Stick with the lower segment of your thumb and avoid having to move your thumb tip off the buttons. With enough practice, this works for all input directions but requires you to intuitively know how to control whether you grip the stick or slide over it. The small, ungrippy stick really helps there.
    This is why I use the gamecube controller. It has a C-Stick I can use with the same thumb that does the buttons without me ever having to choose between the two.

    Putting on shake smash on wiimote + nunchuck allows easy aerial attacks without momentum loss. falling up-aerial is also very easy to execute with shake smash on. People should definitely try it.

    wiimote/nunchuck user here. awesome and very informative video.. my preference: I have all my d-pad buttons configured to grabs and it plays out so well for me so I don't have to rely on A+B to grab so often. :) also agree about the lack of buttons on it.. geeesh

    Before I watch the vid... here's my current setup that I use: Wii U Pro Controller
    L and R are Shield
    ZL and ZR are Grab
    Tap Jump is *Off*
    Y is Jump
    X is Special Move
    A/B are both Attack.
    L stick is (obviously) movement
    And the R stick is tilt attacks.
    Also the D-pad is taunts, but I feel like that's kind of self explanatory.

    You can still do regular Attacks with the right-stick set to Smash attacks, but it has to be after a directional input, i.e. lightly holding Up/Sideways.

    I figured out the perfect control scheme. You need the buttons on the back set to bidou (note: this only works with pro controller or gamepad), either the X or Y button set to grab, and tap jump turned off. Now here comes the new tech. Set the C stick to either smash attack or tilt, it's just personal preference. The last part may be a big sacrifice for some of you (read: Luigi/Greninja mains) but it's worth it. Change all of the inputs on the D pad to special, I don't care if you can't taunt while using the layout. It will take a while to get used to holding it this way, but this essentially allows you to combine the benefits and advanced tech of bidou with the ability to throw out any aerial you want while jumping of the standard control scheme. Hope this helps but you have to hold it kind of weird, oh well...

    The control schemes for the GameCube controller are set to the way I feel comfortable when playing. I always have my c stick to tilts. Plus also showed the technique can be used for my main, secondary and pocket character.

    You can instantly dash attack from sheild with c stick set to smash. You must input the c stick down when preforming a dash.

    For tap jump off, you could have mentioned the up tilt feature which allows you to do up tilts easier

    Taking out the pro controller battery and simply plugging the usb to charge is a smart idea. It should be the norm so that big tournaments don't get delayed.

    Yo, for my fellow GC anti-tap jumpers, you can double stick and use OoS a LOT easier by setting your unused shoulder button to jump. Takes some getting used to, but it works quite well.

    given the new 3ds's layout, it is actually faster to glide toss on the 3ds, thanks to the c stick nub. mainly because there's less movement required compared to the pro or the GC. Also, I switch my L and Y buttons so that it's easier to do some moves such as outta shield options, quickly executing Luigi's jump tornado, and just grabbing in general because I'm using my dominant hand.

    You can do an instant dash attack with the c-stick set to smash attacks. Just hit forward then down on the c-stick.

    For the people complaining about the execution of up-tilts with tap-jump on, just set your C-stick to Attacks. Not only it fixes that problem (for me at least), you get a ton of other benefits over Smash-stick as mention in the video.

    8:44 that is pretty accurate... it's hard to be pro when your thumb hurts from the somewhat pointy edges of the wii remote D-pad... that was my only controller option when I first got into the series...

    I feel like the controller you use and setup are somewhat dependant on the character you play. For example, you'll want to map the c-stick to tilts if you use Samus since their better than her Smash attacks, whereas on a character like ZSS who doesn't use her tilts as frequently, (mainly because of Down-smash), then you'll want to map your c-stick to Smash attacks. Personally, my local gaming store was sold out of GameCube adapters, so I always practice on the GamePad. I main Pac and Yoshi, and I use two different control setups, Smash c-stick for Pac and Tilt c-stick for Yoshi

    I didn't think about setting one of the direction pad buttons to shield so you can spam air dodge, that's such a great tip. Normally I have L/R as shield, Y as jump (tap jump off) and X as grab so that I can easily jab if I whiff a grab because A is so close. Also c stick set to attack. If you need help inputting a smash attack then I have something to tell you . . .
