I heard a version of this in real life so I was interested to see the recorded version on youtube. Professor Tim does not disappoint at all! It is a shame he does not teach us every day and all the time. His wit is amazing and there is so much to teach us all. I enjoy Professor Tim's thinking..it is not hard to follow and learn from him. If only he had been in my school in the late 60's...early 70's. He's very entertaining..but leaves you with an unforgettable education.iI wish he had been my teacher in my early years. He does not suffer fools but recognises a hungry mind.

One of the oldest toilets I know of can be found in one of the houses at Skara Brae along the shore of The Bay Of Skaill in Orkney. That one was a small cubicle off set to the main living area in one of the houses...
I followed this for some of the way..then I became distracted. However, I see now how the "miasma" was what was once thought of vapours was not ill wind (pardon my words) and hysteria..instead it was poor flush of people's excrement. It was essential to health. The old toilettes were just ..erm..dumps. A new language was needed to dignify a rather basic function..so it got a little more delicate. You mention Florence Nightingale and her efforts in the Crimean War..Her values perhaps did not forward sanitary conditions. Difficult on the battlefield but I have no knowledge of how she acheived some of her goals in such an arena.. but I would hope to think she did her utmost....perhaps my own days as a nurse would encourage that thinking..that it took some extraordinary people to take us to a level of hygiene and disease free survival. It was not left to the old thinkers to settle for vapours, and hysteria...or just cholera and typhoid. Out of deprivation and disease and many deaths...came a slow but steady bold thinking..that it was not the air, or vapours carried from polluted rivers..but a need for hygiene, soap, water, decent clean water..it was a turning point.
I used 'Princess Margaret's' original Thomas Crapper toilet, in a certain castle where I was a guest, for a month. (I was a poet, when I was a person.) One night, 5 of us sneaked in. It was as comfortable as an easy chair, and the tiles and original fittings were incredible. Best pee I ever had.
