great cover of one of what I think is one of the best DK tracks.... I mean, theres a lot of good ones, but for me, at the time, this stood out, it was a bit different than a lot of other stuff that I was listening to back in 1984

Original and cover are both amazing. What makes the cover work so well is that it updates the sound but retains the message of self interested corporations fucking the world. To me it reinforces the persistence of the problem of destructive capitalism through changing cultural contexts, but also the enduring beauty of the melody asserts the persistence of hope. Whatever, it's a fucking amazing song. A song for the ages.
It’s not about “corporations” but self interested *people*. Marin County is one of the wealthiest places in the world. It’s almost all expensive single family homes. They kept BART from connecting it to the rest of the bay, and even now there are no plans for Marin, even though it’s only connected to SF by a few ferries and the ancient single level Golden Gate bridge that grinds to a standstill every day. But Marin residents prefer it that way, forget “keep the riff raff out”, keep even middle class white collar workers out! The South Bay which is between SF and Santa Cruz where Jello went to college is a similarly wealthy area full of single family homes, although at least it’s now getting BART, electrified CalTrain, and theoretically high speed rail. Also back at that time Marin county was more liberal than Santa Clara county (both are now deep blue), so maybe Jello targeted residents of the former for their hypocrisy. They have a reputation of being environmentalist types but as demonstrated by how they deal with issues like housing and transportation, it’s mostly for show.

ThePunkmar77 I remember the NME (that's New Musical Express, a trendy music newspaper, if you're not from the UK) saying in their review of 'Virus 100' that it was "surprisingly good from the usually lamish Les Thugs." Lamish I thought. This was a couple of months after the release of I.A.B.F. In my opinion, IABF was one of the greatest punk albums of all time. And the NME were calling them lamish. With the tracks Good Friends, Stop the War and Paranoia it was incredibly aggressive riffing with a camp voice (in the same vein as the Buzzcocks). I absolutely love this song, especially the bass solo that comes in at about 3mins.

Apparently Jello met with Les Thugs when they were in a US tour and instantly clicked with them, thats when they agreed to make this cover for a DK cover compilation.
It was to celebrate the 100th alternative tentacles release and I think dead Kennedy was the first to be release from alternative tentacles? I also got it on vinyl back then. I love it ^^
Probably it's because it sounds more modern and melodic and, maybe, you're not that into the 80's hc/punkrock scene. But basically it's the same song, the same rhythm, same chords, etc.
I love the original but I think I love this more. I just went back and listened to it and the vocals are way too loud for a start. In this version the vocals are just a part of the mix. This is better for dancing to.
I go back and forth between this and the original. I like both but this one seems kinder whereas the DK are a bit too apathetic for me. I feel a painful longing listening to the song. I find doom to be unavoidable, yet the song takes that fact and sort of redeems it. There is destruction yet "there will always be a moon over marin". There is ugliness, deception and evil around you. Yet good will never truly die. There shall always be a moon over Marin, a monument which weeps over the cruel loss, a deathless watcher which casts beauty upon the ruined world.

Dude, they were personally hand-picked them by Jello himself, and to be honest they succesfully adapted it into their own style... let´s be honest, trying to replicate Jello´s voice is impossible, he just sings with so much power, thats why current DKs suck so much.
This is right at the top of a short list of my favorite cover songs ever.
