  • While surveying the Battle of Midway site, the crew aboard Vulcan Inc.’s Research Vessel (R/V) Petrel discovered the shipwreck of Japanese aircraft carrier IJN Kaga. During this weeks-long expedition, the crew aboard Petrel surveyed more than 500 square nautical miles to examine the expansive site where the Battle of Midway occurred. This is the first time Petrel has surveyed an entire battlefield, leading them to discover the remains of Kaga. The wreckage of Kaga was found 5,400 meters (more than 17,000 feet) below the surface.

As a young boy in 1960, my family had a ranch in "nowhere" California. Across the road from our home lot, a new nursery was put in. We knew nothing about the new land/business owner. A little later we learned a Japanese family had purchased the land to start a ornamental tree nursery. 10 acres of onimental trees. I thought nothing of it until the day their house was finished and they moved in. In typical rural American fashion my family went over to welcome them to the neighborhood of 2 families, (us and them). Upon entering their house I was holding my father's hand. I felt him hesitate . . . I looked up at him to see a face I nearly couldn't recognize . . .
Mr. Kitamura walked over to greet my father with a hand shake . . . and my father responded by extending his hand. I looked around the house and saw pictures of a Japanese submarine with all hands in parade dress on deck. I saw a samurai sword hanging over the mantle with an American flag on the left and a Japanese Rising Sun flag on the right. Resting on the mantle below the samurai sword there was Japanese Captain's cap. I was too young and naive to realize the awkward and precarious situation unfolding before me between these 2 former blood enemies.
I listened to the 2 men talk in labored tones about WWII. My father had been in the US Navy during WWII and had lost numerous friends to Japanese submarine attacks.
Mr. Kitamura was in fact, a Japanese Submarine Captain. The tense moment continued as the 2 of men cautiously quized one another on who they had been during WWII. My father, in a low key voice asked a simple question, "of all places on earth, how did you get here?" Mr Kitamura answered, "the war was over, and there was nothing left . . . no where safe for my family, only America offered my family the chance for us to be safe and together." My father asked one last question, "are you now an American citizen?" Mr Kitamura said, "Yes ! We are all American citizens." With that my father reached out his hand and the 2 former enemies shook hands and my father said, "OK . . . let's leave the Kitamura family to settled in." We said good night and headed back across the road to our house. As we got in and settled my mother asked my father, "how are you?" My father said, "I won't lie, it's hard . . . but, the war is over and they're now Americans . . . it's important for us to treat them as Americans." After that I never heard a disrespectful word out of my father's mouth regarding Mr Kitamura or his family. For years thereafter our 2 families celebrated a number of American Holidays together, inparticular 4th of July.
Looking back after all these years I'm amazed how that 1 brief meeting between my father and Captain Kitamura, influenced me and taught me more about the meaning of truly being an American than in all the civics classes combined.

Wow . . . dude . . . that's exactly the kinda' mentality that caused the problem in the first place, (Us vs Them)!
      Don't you get it ? ? ?
      We're Americans !
      Not Afro American
      Not Hispanic American
      Not Asian American
      Not Japanese American
      Democrat American
      Republic American
      or
      Immigrant American . . .
      We're all just Americans.
Anything less and you are guilty of promoting another useless war for nothing more than some abstract, convoluted political notion of political correctness.

      I see . . .
What did the Japanese do to Americans who were living in Japan during WWII?
      I suggest you look it up . . .
It will make you cry . . .
Americans living in Japan had it far worse.
But again, you conveniently or cleverly miss the point . . . what could have been an utter disaster, was corrected. If you're looking for perfection in humanity or political ideology, you won't find it . . . It doesn't exist. The best we can do is learn from our mistakes and forgive one another so we can build a better future.
Looks to me you need to learn how to forgive yourself.

I have a problem with the service men who died supporting world domination and brutal genocide. Yes, they are serving their respective countries. However, for the wrong reasons. 400,000 Americans had to die to stop this madness. Read about Pearl Harbor, Nanking China and the Bataan Death March and the way prisoners were tortured and murdered in the Pacific Theater. Move on to the European Theater and the widespread genocide conducted in concentration camps. Justify having specialized Army units (the SS) designed to hunt down and murder innocent civilians. In a strange way, the rusticles make you feel as if the ship is still bleeding, and alive, even now. Kaga took the worst pounding and most casualities of the 4 Japanese carriers. Flight decks ripped from stern to bow by massive explosions, she refused to give in even after magazine blasts ruptured through the bottom of her keel. How fitting that she would be the first ghost to welcome her nation in remembrance of this horrible battle.

I was surprised that Kaga was found in one piece. According to records, she went through rounds of nasty explosions and witness said the mid-section of the ship was widely cracked open under the flight deck. BTW, the picture shown at the beginning is a little misleading because it represents Kaga before the major renovation. She was experimentally built with 3 layers of flight decks, but was re-constructed into a modern one flat-top structure before 1935. May she RIP.

She was beautiful in life, a battlecruiser saved when she was converted to a carrier. Though made for war, she was unique in her shape as her kind led the way to a new kind of naval warfare, highlighted first by the British against the Italians, then followed up by Pearl Harbor. Then the war in the Pacific became the great carrier war, ushering a new and terrible way to wage war. May those who went down with her rest in peace and may those who fought against her stand with those fallen, made comrades in the aftermath of the folly that is war. May we never again know such terrible destruction such as the fires that consumed the world seventy-five years ago. Rest, Kaga, and know the peace mankind struggles to maintain.

I have new respect for the Japanese and German soldiers of WWII After seeing how corrupt officials have brainwashed many Americans into doing terrible things. Something about a ship sunk during battle tugs at my heart. Doesn't matter which flag it flew. The IJN Kaga attacked Pearl Harbor and it was involved in attacks on various locations in the Pacific including Midway. But it was a grand ship crewed by brave men. It deserves respect as do the men dying aboard her. Detest the government and its leaders, not its people or their ships. The video has a haunting score! Bless Paul Allen for funding this world wide hunt for wrecked ships!

If we truly appreciate the sacrifices of the over 300 American boys killed, then we should make it mandatory to have every single high school senior write a paper about one of the 300 plus men that made it possible for them to live in such a great country as America. Those that gave their lives in that battle should NEVER be forgotten.

My friend's dad was a pilot during WW-2. A German Luftwaffe pilot. He was captured in north Africa and held at a camp in the mid west. He worked outside the camp and became friends with many Americans. After the war he became an American citizen and served in our Air Force. Then he worked for an American Airline as a pilot. He hung out at the Legion and VFW and many of his friends were American veterans of WW-2. He was accepted by his former enemies as a friend and fellow citizen. That is the American way.
The fact that he came to love America and Americans while a prisoner says a lot about this country.

In Kaga's case, most of her flight deck was long gone before the current became a factor. Survivor accounts describe the entire flight and hangar decks completely destroyed from roughly the bridge to almost all the way aft by the time she was scuttled.

      @Wolfeson28 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@wargent99 Those were a part of Kaga's initial design when the ranges of carrier aircraft were so short that designers felt the carriers themselves might need to be able to fend off surface ships. Obviously those guns served no real purpose by WW2, but the Japanese were hardly the only ones to make that mistake; Lexington and Saratoga also were both designed with 8-inch guns, which were only removed in 1942.

    • @robertschumacher2707

    • @smc1942

      They were not sisters.
Akagi and Kaga were built very different from each other. Most obvious is their island. Akagi's was on her port (left) side, whereas Kaga's island was on her starboard (right) side. Both had different armaments as well. They were each very much one of a kind. That they operated together doesn't make them sister ships.
