  • This is a tutorial on how to make a checkerboard kumihimo braid. Please feel free to give it a go yourself and I hope you enjoy.
    Kumihimo starter kit:
    If you are a beginner in kumihimo, I have a starter kit available. It is a great way to get started as it has everything you need to make several pieces and get you going on your kumihimo journey.

    Kumihimo bobbins on Amazon:
    goo.gl/P8iJEo (affiliate)
    Materials:
    1mm satin cord
    Square kumihimo disk
    Your cords need to be roughly three times the size that you want your final piece to be, so if you want to make a bracelet, wrap your cord around your wrist three times and use that length to work with. Now for this braid you will need to make the cords on the sides about 30-40cm longer than the rest, as they will get used up quicker.

    Hi Mo here!! Had my daughter and 3 grandad kids down for the day, they live in Stevenage and we live Bexhill (it's near Hastings) and I had loads of jewellery to give her and the 2 boys want bracelets so I'm going to do them in red and white football team! Lol. It looks difficult but your such a good teacher I'm sure I can do it! Will let you know! Bye for now xx

    I've watched other videos on Kumihimo and most use weights (mostly our American friends) for the tension but you don't, this makes it so much easier (and cheaper) knowing I don't have to go to the extra expense of buying weights etc. Thank you so much for your tutorial.

    • @CSLdesigns
      @CSLdesigns  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Christine Butler Yes, a lot of people use weights with their kumihimo. I also use them, but only with certain projects where I feel it is necessary. When I use satin cord, I don't find it necessary at all, but you can always just create your own weight with a bag of coins or something similar :-)

    I have recently been making kumuhimo braids for my quest of trying things different and new in terms of learning things that have a distinked twist I have seen other stuff on your channels on chain mail time to start up the ladder nothing o
    Is old I still very much like creating and searching for new fresh ideas to keep me inspired
    Art is something that enriches the mind body and sole the joy it brings to see what ones hands bring to life
    With a peace of neutral string I my self have made my own kumuhimo board from a peace of wood now looking for patterns of interest if you do know of other places to look so I can continue to look for the new and fresh ideas
    I thank you in advance
    I will want to wish you and yours a very special holiday season
    Meet Christmas

    My braid has a center strip, which is lovely and it is approximately 1.25 inches wide. When moving the side cords do you alternate sides or move them from the same side each time?

    After each time you cross the longer cords, couldn't you just turn the board? It appears that all the cords would be in the correct positions at that point, without having to move any cords "back into position" except the longer cords on the sides. I don't have the square disk yet, but am trying to find several patterns to try when I get mine.

    • @CSLdesigns
      @CSLdesigns  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Martha D (JustMartha) If I understand you correctly then no it wouldn't work, as you would just be moving the cords back to where you took them from :-)

    i have craftlace. it's like a plastic in neon colors and where can i buy the kumihimo board

    • @CSLdesigns
      @CSLdesigns  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      That could look cool. You can really get them anywhere. If you type in 'kumihimo disk' in a google search loads of shopping options will come up. Most jewellery supply shops sell them both online and in stores. But from personal experience you can get them for the best prices online. Ebay would be a really good place to look as well. You can either buy the disk on its own or a starter kit. Hope that is helpful ;-)

      Hello :-) The lengths of your cords need to be roughly 3 times as long as you want your final piece to be. That is a general rule with kumihimo. I hope that was helpful.

    So I messed up about half way through mine (I'm not sure what I did) but now I have stripes instead of checkers and I was just wondering if you have a pattern for stripes. Or maybe if you could tell me what I messed up on if you experienced this. Thanks, I love the pattern!

    It is very hard to find the rattail satin cord anywhere,. None of our craft show have it, and I don't like the other kind of string that feels textured. I think it's considered chinese thread, and I looked online and all rattail is sooooo expensive.. what do u use for yours and where do u buy it?

    • @CSLdesigns
      @CSLdesigns  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      F Jolliff Theoretically yes it can. It's just easier to keep the cords organised and in the right order on the square one, but you can certainly give it a go :-)

    Hi, I was making this bracelet with you and think maybe I must be missing something because my bracelet is flat and not checker board? I like what is coming out but is nothing like yours? Please help! Thank you!

    • @CSLdesigns
      @CSLdesigns  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      madmamsqueek Dontwantto I'm sorry to hear that, but it's a little hard for me to advice without seeing it. Have you set the colours up on the disk correctly from the beginning? Otherwise I'm not really sure what the problem could be :-)

    • @1madmamsqueek
      @1madmamsqueek 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      CSLdesigns I think I figured out what I was missing. I didn't pull the four longer strings tight, I just let them cross over and that left the flat braid. Thank you again for replying.

    How much longer are the longer cords? I'm not sure how 'a bit longer' is translate into inches.

    • @CSLdesigns
      @CSLdesigns  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well it's hard to give a precise measurement, because it all depends on how long you want your final piece to be, but try and make them about 30cm longer if you're making a bracelet.

    • @blessings13
      @blessings13 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for you quick reply. My wrists are 7 inches. I was planning on cutting the cord 28 inches. So, if I add another 5 inches to the longer cards, that should be sufficient? Also, I am using 2mm satin cord. Is that going to make any difference. In case you have not figured it out yet, I am quite new to Kumihimo. This is the first time I am going to be trying to make a flat braid.

    • @CSLdesigns
      @CSLdesigns  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Korkie moore-bruno That's fine :-) Just to be safe I'd probably recommend more like an extra 10 inches extra on the longer cords, cause it's always better to have to much than too little anyway. The thickness of the cord does make a difference because the diameter of the cord is larger but, but that is why it is quite hard to give specific measurements, and better with guidelines. But the best thing I can say is to just give it a try with these lengths, and I think it should be fine. But once you've made the first one, then your know how you can adjust the lengths for any future ones. Please let me know how you get along, and I hope that I was just a little helpful :-)
