This was one of those wrecks where I saw it live and assumed the worst.... still can't believe Blaney just popped out of the car without really any injury. The roof held up very well for taking a hit like that.
It genuinely is a miracle more people didn't die in the pre-HANS device and SAFER barrier era. Thankfully Dave survived, had a long career, and fathered a Cup Series champion!
I've watched Nascar for 40 years, and this wreck is one of the least known "I thought he was dead" crashes in Nascar history. You're talking about a roof-first impact at a sharp sudden angle into a concrete wall at the fastest track on the circuit, before many of the additional bars have been added since. It looked HORRIBLE, but it's not well known.
The roof held up well all things considered
Wow roof held up. Interesting he had a similar wreck at Michigan in 2008 i believe
Back wen Lycos was a thing. It was THE search engine of the 90s.
Brad Loney with some serious ARCA brakes
Dammit I wanted to know the reason these cars ride rougher...;)
This is the era where broadcasters thought it would be a good idea to open up every single spotter mic they had during an incident to drown out the actual call of their announcers. Imagine walking into an auditorium and everyone is having their own conversations and you can't hear the speaker at the podium. Pretty basic stuff. You can tell by the late 90s most of the original Speedworld staff had moved on because the production quality had suffered tremendously.
Holy... same hit that Dale takes the next afternoon. Thankfully no one takes a similar hit to Bill Elliott.
It's literally the same wreck Bill had. Idk what you're talking about
Nascar coverage from 1998 looks like the quality od F1 coverage from 1988 😂
You'll notice there at that scene towards the end the guy sitting on the wall with his leg down on pit road, That wouldn't happen today.
Arca Brakes Speculator Crash NASCAR Busch Grand National Series
Even if a taller driver like Micheal Waltrip would have had this happen even back then since the brunt of the impact was on passenger side I don’t think this ends up anymore serious, but if it would have been on driver side then yea might be bad regardless if f the hight of the driver back then, now they doubled both top and sides and even more so with newsman’s wreck at Daytona, Newmans Wreck at Daytona should have probably been Fatal but because nascar had spent a lot more time during the offseason leading up to that 500 it paid off!
That was nasty
One thing that saves Dave Blaney here is the fact that he's a shorter driver. This could have been much more serious if he was around Michael Waltrip's height.
