    The lack of diversity challenge has been at Poly since at least since the 80's. I think it got worse after Prop 209 in the mid 90s in California restricted affirmative action which had been in place since the 70s when the landmark supreme court case decision of Bakke vs UC was rendered. Based on my experience there were several factors that lower the diversity at Poly. 1) Sadly, many of the school districts in California suffer from lack of funding and students without the culture and family support to succeed in collegiate education. All to often this is ends up being students of color for whatever reason which I won't debate here. Add a factor that the amount of women (regardless of ethnicity) going into engineering and science is still very low nationwide TODAY, that is to say abysmally low, then current state of affairs makes sense within Cal Poly. 2) Cal Poly is academically rigorous especially for STEM and Architecture. You need to have had a solid college prep curriculum in high school to thrive in the STEM majors. All too often I saw students from ethnically disadvantaged school districts (Southeast San Francisco, Compton, Imperial Valley) and they tragically were in over their heads academically. Upon speaking AND working with many of them (not all), I realized that in MANY cases, they DEFINITELY had the desire but their public high school systems had failed them in their basic high school curriculums. Add to this financial hardship and it was a recipe for disaster. 3) Another contributing factor is the people factor and integrating with others different from your own background. I say this about white and non-white students. Whatever color you are, you really have to be comfortable about reaching out to others and working together to succeed in your major. I had the pleasure of meeting both white and non-white students who had RARELY if at all interacted with someone outside their race on a professional scholastic level let alone social. I was SHOCKED! No one was really a bad person, they just didn't know how to relate to each other. I feel the administration was VERY aware of the lack of diversity and there were certainly efforts to change it and support students who were struggling, but I learned that the socio-economic hurdles are pretty big in this state. Poly can't fix what is essentially a failure of the state public high schools which is an outrage. Ironically, it was the student who could reach out beyond their own ethnic background who were the most successful Poly graduates as I observed in later years. In further irony, because Poly was/is more substantially more white, white students had one disadvantage in that it was too easy to stay in their comfort zone and just tread along. I loved my time at Poly. I mean there are always jerks and prima donnas everywhere you go, but mostly everyone was helpful and it is generally a good town and a good community. I wouldn't trade my time there for anything and I still would have gone to Poly instead of Berkeley as I did have a choice. It was a great education!

      Thanks for that explanation. Totally makes sense! I would not trade my experience at cal poly for anything as well.

    Hi Erica! Cal Poly slo is one of my top choices. I was just wondering if you would recommend bringing a car to slo? I am a really adventurous person and would like to bring my car so I can go places easily, but is parking too expensive to be worth it? Thanks!!

    • @EricaZetterquist
      @EricaZetterquist  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! I’m not sure they allow freshman to bring their car on campus, I know a few years ago they didn’t but I’m not sure if that’s changed. If you wanted to park your car in a neighborhood about a mile away from campus you could but most neighborhoods in slo require a permit from the city which you can only get if you live on the street.

    Is there a good glee club or voice group club for girls on campus? Are they good? Our daughter has been doing choir for 3 years and 3 years of large organization for children's choir in the past. We are looking into the clubs. Great to hear that there is good school spirit even no major following to big or national sports.

      I’m not too familiar with singing clubs but I’m pretty sure there are two that I remember. I’m pretty sure they are fairly competitive to get into so I would assume they are good groups!:)

      Every year the policy for freshman having cars on campus changes. If you have a reason that you could argue made is necessary then I think you can!(like a job or weekly appointment or something)

    do freshman have to live on campus?

    • @EricaZetterquist
      @EricaZetterquist  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes, unless you are unable to afford the cost of living on campus. I think if you're from the surrounding area and dont want to live on campus you have to provide some financial information as to why you can't afford it. Cal Poly is different than a lot of CSUs where almost no students are commuter students even though many of them did grow up in the area.
