Good news, Mary!! It IS a "legit" word. It's defined in Merriam-Webster Unabridged as a dialectectal variant of "store bought". The entry in this dictionary dates the adjective to 1738, and labels it "chiefly dialect", which means that it mostly appears in regional varieties of Rnglish. It was used to describe something bought instead of homemade.
