No disrespect to the first gentleman (!), but for all #HipHopProducers with a tight time schedule (like me): The Hip Hop-Guy starts at 32:00. Enjoy! Thanks to LEMElive
Informative lecture, Mr Beatnick's savannah Ep was one of my favourite releases of 2013, and I think he's a great producer but was put off by the way he compared his MPC to Ableton. Embrace both new and old technology they both bring something to the table.
I love the information here. But if baffles me that with so many talented sound guys in the audience and on stage, no one could get that feedback and squeaking from the mics to stop. It really makes it hard to listen to.
Ableton and Logic are great If you can afford it. all of this fancy gear doesn't mean shit to us underground producers. like Madlib, Dilla and Doom once famously said : find a little groovebox. the Roland series especially; the sp-303 was the best in the early 00s. couple that with a 32mb card and you were golden. 16 minutes of 44.1/16bit/320kps across 4 banks of 12 pads. the effects were next level and the sequencer was dope. how many awesome recordings, that you all love, were made on this. Lib took it to Brazil and made beats every day with a 500 dollar machine and a 100 dollar portable turntable. all the bells and whistles are great (like I said earlier If You Can Afford it) but every single rap production from the 70s to the 90s was made on cheap, underground equipment because that was all we could afford. my 303 crapped out about 7 years ago and I will not move to the 404 and the 555 was just trying to be an mpc. Try and find an MPC, ya'll. yes, the computers give you thousands more possibilities but our artform was about taking what we had available and doing the most we could with it. side note; I've never heard of either of these two dudes on stage. If. If they actually mattered, I'd know their names. I'm currently trying to alter my algorithms so I can watch videos that matter and are relevant to me. 23 minutes in of a shitty house track being made. wtf am i doing? I'm going to make a beat and get smoked out yo. peace
You always get a bad view from his screen. Why no direct view ? Even people who wathced live probably did not learn as much as they could have if they were seeing the screen.
yea i hafta agree with u guys.. the best sampling creativeness ive seen on youtube so far is from a guy named slik da relic's channel.. u should check him out.. as well as all the other Hip Hop producers
Get yourself a copy of Ableton, Logic, Reason--Legally vs illegally; I don't care to know how, but you'll need it--or any other DAW with "time-stretch"/"warp" Capability. Ableton definitely has the most intuitive, and easy to use warp function, IMO. Anyways, those DAWs give you the ability to stretch the audio, from the entire length of a song, down to individual notes, allowing you to speed up or slow down whatever you want. TH-cam is littered with tutorials on warping and time stretching; some very helpful, but most, pretty shitty. The good ones are pretty easy to spot, though; lots of certified trainers post tutorials onto TH-cam. Be warned: time-streching isn't magic, and isn't a universal fix for all of your problems. Some audio is just too fast or too slow, to be sped up or slowed down, to your preferred tempo. After a certain point, nasty artifacts, hisses, gaps, etc. will start to present themselves. Listen to the sample, at the beginning of this song; a perfect example of what warped sounds sound like, when stretched too far. /watch?v=m26XUDUVPcA It's like the sampling equivalent to clipping. Some times, the extremes sound pretty cool, but most times it fucking sucks, so avoid excessive time stretching, or else YOUR AUDIO WILL SUFFER!!!!!! MWAHAHAHAHAH!!!! Good luck, rookie.
I never understood why people who use software on a laptop feel the need to justify what they use it for, or why. Something I've noticed in so many videos. I don't the software people should have some kinda shame, or let a hardware user tell them they aren't doing it right. As a straight hardware kid, I can say I know plenty of people at my school who have gangs of nice hardware, but can't really do much at all with it. Or it's garbage. Then I can name a kid who uses an old desktop PC and uses the typing keyboard to do his thing, and can run circles around them. Only way I would go around trying to persuade people to use what I use, is if the company was paying me good money to do so xD If your on Software.. Don't feel like you have to give a reason for why you use it. Should stop letting that matter to you. Or anyone tell you otherwise. I hate that discouraging sh*t.
Hardware works better for me is also what I said. But I won't put others down who don't use it. I think that's why so many people with software constantly have to justify why they use what they use. Personally I can't imagine self imposed shame... Get down with what you get down with. All that matters is what it sounds like.
if you know what the hell you doing you can rock any thing and I come from the MPC, SP 12 .MV 8000 to softeware gen ........im hiphop before sugerhill gang...
Sugarhill Gang isin't Hip Hop... That Silva Robinson was just like the rest. Exploit the culture of the people to make herself big dollars. Even the rest of those clowns she picked up off the street on it too. Hank stealing Caz rhymes. Absolutely right tho what you said... Sorry I don't mean to go so crazy I just have to defend our culture to the fullest
They were the advent of pop rap. Sure The Furious Five came first on a record.. Sure they were given those subjects and couldn't do what they wanted. But it was not nearly as bad as that Sugar Hill crap LOL Just listen to what Big Bank Hank said... "I'm the C A S S the N O V A and the rest is F L Y" he said that because that is who the rhymes were stolen from. Cassanova Fly is Grand Master Caz. From day one it has been like this for exploiting a culture that nearly ended gang violence in New York City at the time, that was the one thing that broke racial barriers to bring everyone together. To make money. And they ripped them kids off from day one.
WTF have they pointed the camera to the MB's keyboard instead of the frigging display ? That way we could have actually SEEN whats going on in Ableton.Of what use is it to show me Mr. Greymatter's hands ?! Gawd.
What's the point of using this box nowadays after all? Any laptop with connected controller will do the job more quickly and efficient. I'm sorry but at 38:00 when he sequences that four on the floor kick, and then open hi-hat, it looks kinda stupid :-(
sayanchik I think the point here is that there are different methods of doing things. It'd be boring if everyone did everything exactly the same wouldnt it.
Wow much technical many sounds. just fuckin with ya, this some shit. way to say "not to rely on presets" and then rely on presets. definition of a sample is lost on this greymatter at 8:20... lol auspicious name to say the least.
2 guys presenting at the table were kinda dull.. maybe it was nerves, or too many cups of tea before the show... The teacher/whoever it was running the show had way more interesting things to say and better explanations, wouldve liked to hear from him
Got nothing from this, shame. Saying that, got a couple of laughs from Mr Beatnick (who I have respect for and seems like a nice bloke), but the video on the whole felt like a bit of a chore with no pay off, especially the first half. Won't comment on the the sound.....unless you count that ;)
why is it that most of these "pro videos" i see end up making terrible beats. very mediocre. lets be honest this can all be done in 30 mins for a track like that. where is the epic content? this could be done on a volca alone.
Phil Perry Exactly. A REAL muso is someone with actual talent, say for example, a pianist or a cellist or a singer (who can actually sing without the use of a computer). Almost anyone with half a brain can take a bit from a song and loop it.
***** How many times have I heard this: I played piano, guitar etc. This is what a lot of people say and then it turns out they had a couple of lessons and played for 1 maybe 2 years with no success. Btw, piano is the easiest instrument and no one except in the 15th Century thought it was a technical monster since it's straightforward and quite self explanatory.
***** I have nothing against electronic music, in fact, I quite like it. I'm a guitarist and singer and I have tried adding electronic sounds to my music. But the act of sampling just pisses me off. If you were sampling your own sounds then fair enough but someone elses songs is essentially riding off of someone elses success. I'm pretty open minded about music and genres, I like almost everything from death metal to experimental jazz. I don't feel threatened by electronic music, I embrace it. I just dont like it when people take other peoples stuff and claim it to be theirs.
No disrespect to the first gentleman (!), but for all #HipHopProducers with a tight time schedule (like me): The Hip Hop-Guy starts at 32:00. Enjoy! Thanks to LEMElive
+Loop Ferrigno may the god of hip hop be with you!!!! xD
+Loop Ferrigno Nice 1 for that bro, time is everything
Haha.. you're welcome, guys! ;-)
This was a very interesting and informative lecture. Thanks
+1 for the Drexciya shirt on Mr. Beatnick.
Didn't even notice! Yes.

He wasn't really comparing it the way you're implying.. He was saying he uses an older method, and the newer stuff is great - but complex.
I'm going to use samples of this video about sampling in my video about videos about sampling.( Sample Remix Re edited)
What's the name ft the tune being played around 3:50?
Thanks
What's the name of the song that starts at 3:10? Love it.
35:18 left some great advice!
I love the information here. But if baffles me that with so many talented sound guys in the audience and on stage, no one could get that feedback and squeaking from the mics to stop. It really makes it hard to listen to.
anyone know what mixer he's using?
What is that mixer? please anyone?

Whats up with the latency on the second guys sounds?
The sounds are starting 10 hours later after he pushes the pad.
This Greymatter guy is the business!
yea i hafta agree with u guys.. the best sampling creativeness ive seen on youtube so far is from a guy named slik da relic's channel.. u should check him out.. as well as all the other Hip Hop producers
Well.
Its 2021 and the lines have now been blurred between hardware and software sampling. The advent of many a new MPCs now available. 😎🙏🏾
Not expecting an answer. But does anyone know how to "transpose" a sample without changing its tempo?

What did he say at 47:45 ?
amazing how a demonstration about audio has the worst mic in the world
+Salim Jbara they dont have to know how to record thats why they sample
+Ignition Which is hilarious because that's kinda part of their job. I know they use other people's audio, but they still work with sound.
i didnt even watch the whole video ha. but yeah you have a good point.
+Ignition yeah it makes it unwatchable
+Salim Jbara lol.. I was thinkingthe same thing :-)
38:37 "We are already better than David Guetta" IM DEAD
240p? Is there a better version of this?
Please, there are subtitles in Portuguese?
where is tutorial&

its no problem I forgot about that you right I got nothing but respect for that period....

dude was shaking like tree leaves
The Shining, Dilla
The bass line in the first tracks, sounds a lot like the Benny golson tune...Always Dancing. Drops real nice tho.
First guys mic cleans up at 6:15
Learned a few things from Greymatter but that's about it. Sorry guys, this could have been a much better stream
Fission App at 6:45 is itunes.apple.com/ar/app/fission/id549251391?mt=12
thanks i had trouble finding it on google.
That's a fucking SICK Drexciya shirt!!!!!!
Everything is perfect.
Had a large cup of tea before i watched this ;)
Ring tones and so on...
What's the point of using this box nowadays after all? Any laptop with connected controller will do the job more quickly and efficient. I'm sorry but at 38:00 when he sequences that four on the floor kick, and then open hi-hat, it looks kinda stupid :-(
Vibe man...its all about vibe, punchy sound and what feels good ; ). Think of it as instrument ; ).
mekinis I see, but I still think that doing it far more interesting than listening to it :-)
sayanchik I think the point here is that there are different methods of doing things. It'd be boring if everyone did everything exactly the same wouldnt it.
Quicker setup IMHO. I mean in terms of if you want to go right away and you already have a stock kit ready to go.
First project he plays sounds very similar to DJ Koze - Illumination
The crowd was so awkward lol, didn't even clap at the beginning haha
Wow much technical many sounds.
just fuckin with ya, this some shit. way to say "not to rely on presets" and then rely on presets.
definition of a sample is lost on this greymatter at 8:20... lol auspicious name to say the least.
he doesn't know where he took this brilliant piano house sample 8:20. no comments
bruh i wanna watch this buttttt its just to much excessive breathing going on
Dude on the mic is so nervous xD
It doesn’t matter what you use ... just make that shit sing. 🎶
that's the bollox of a tune :)
14:30 "This is a C major chord"
Wrong. get some ears.
Those are some subtitles at 22:26 haha
no screenshot software. major fail.
35:47
Only reason why i clicked was because i thought the guy on the right was the Great Snare Jordan..
I am 46 years old. #NuffSaid
How about sampling actual musical instruments?
jim syarto When sampling, you do. But you can also just play some bass, guitar, whatever and sample it
this is so cringey.
Im looking for a good video / documentary about sampling, this is kool and interesting but to muchh gibber jabber
top
Greymatter is a wreck
2 guys presenting at the table were kinda dull.. maybe it was nerves, or too many cups of tea before the show...

Would have been great to watch this but.....sound.
Too many computer programmers in music these days.
Someone hired a shitty sound guy with wireless that arent tuned. Oops!
BORING!
Irony in shitty feedback smh -_-
hmmmm lol
this is horrible
crap
Art!? Hahahahaha Real musos dont need sampling.
*****
Where is the creative part? The ones who created the music that is sampled were creative.
Phil Perry Exactly. A REAL muso is someone with actual talent, say for example, a pianist or a cellist or a singer (who can actually sing without the use of a computer). Almost anyone with half a brain can take a bit from a song and loop it.

Can't add anything to that.
