      I think Kevin and Liza channel is one of the MOST resourceful channel if you want to improve your English. It's definitely my NUMBER ONE go to channel if I want to learn all the nuances or intricate details of English Language. Over the year I learned A LOT from this channel (and I still cannot keep up with All of your videos!)

    "Potable water" in English or: "água potável" in Portuguese, "agua potable" in Spanish, "acqua potabile" in Italian, "eau potable" in French.
    This girl should be thanking Liza for teaching her such a nice word. Sure, "drinking water" is a common collocation, but it's so nice to have a real teacher who can teach us more than common/ordinary words, isn't it?
    Thank you very much to both of you for exposing these so-called "English teachers".

    The phrase "He's off his rocker" typically means that "he's crazy" or "he's acting irrationally," rather than implying that someone is not smart. It suggests that the person is behaving in a way that seems wild or unreasonable. Being "off your rocker (= rocking chair)" suggests a loss of mental balance or stability, leading to the current interpretation of the phrase as describing someone who is mentally unstable or acting crazy.

    "The phrase "off your rocker" is an informal expression meaning to be insane or crazy. Its origin can be traced back to the early 20th century, particularly in British slang. The term "rocker" refers to a rocking chair, which was a common piece of furniture. The implication is that if someone is "off their rocker," they have fallen off their seat, suggesting a loss of stability or sanity". This is a quote from Quora. I guess the problem is that you Kevin as a native think that your variant of English is the most correct, but there are so many ways to speak English and sometimes your flatware is not used in other English-speaking countries. Could it just be that North America is a huge continent, Canada and the USA are 2 different countries ( so far at least😊) and people just use different words for the same thing?? Then the argument is just pointless. "Do you see this is flatware and the sign says "cutlery" but you can also say "utensils" or "silverware" or etc etc" and this only for some spoons and forks😮, poor English learners!

    0:44 "I consider myself to be well-read" I wonder what you've been reading, girl. And you've got a lot of cheek to say you base your statistical knowledge of language use on "your experience as a native speaker". Well, let me tell you something: that's not how it works in the field of linguistics. Your personal experience is what it is: personal, idiosyncratic and limited, by definition. Statistical data about language use is established by extensive and varied repertoires of real use called "corpora", which are classified, analysed and interpreted according to protocols recognised and accepeted by the scientific community. And, no, you needn't be a native speaker to be a corpus linguist doing research into a particular language, but you do need a degree in the field; and, no, one's individual experience is no basis for determining the frequency with which a word is used, regardless of how vast one's personal experience is. Therefore, yes, it IS arrogant to say that a word is rare just because you had to look it up in the dictionary; has it occurred to you that, despite being a native speaker, you may have a limited repertoire of linguistic tools for your personal use, just as it happens to all speakers, native or otherwise? Having said that, I honestly think that the word "potable", despite its more technical connotations and uses, is a fairly common one, and anybody who claims to be educated should be able to understand it with ease, or at least guess it from contextual clues, without the support of a dictionary. Obviously, this last comment is just my opinion; so, I don't expect it to be taken as anything but that.

    • @beatadebski

      Thank you for your thorough and factual clarification! Wish more teachers cared about how language functions rather than fling their "native" status like an unquestionable badge of honor.

    • @fredylopez2477
      @fredylopez2477 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That's true, despite the fact of being native speakers in a language or in our own languages, we all have limited vocabulary for our personal use "linguistic tools" like you texted, that's why I think she didn't even know that the word "potable" existed.
      In my mother tongue (spanish) it exists and the spelling is the same and it means the same BUT, of course it's pronounced differently.

      Let me ask you if you know the word "preposterous"? Someone that has lived in the US a long time but doesn't watch political news or discussions might never hear this word despite being well-educated in engineering or science or accounting. Just think about it. You want to judge someone's intelligence just based on vocabulary?

  • @MilanRadic-i1u

    It is more about the person being strange in behavior, etc., rather than literally insane, which would require a specialist's diagnosis. The person is not literally crazy, as Lisa claims-it’s a metaphor. So, it doesn’t mean the person is insane or stupid, just unusual. You are both wrong.

    • @pani_ella
      @pani_ella 6 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      So you don't say a person is crazy when they behave strange? I'm pretty sure you do, the same as all video clips portrayed these idioms. Don't nit pick

    • @fredylopez2477
      @fredylopez2477 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      If a person behaves strangely, he/she is insane. This person isn't acting logically, isn't coherent.
      "Being crazy" means to act illogically and incoherently and involves violence.
      So, from my point of view Liza's right.
