I still think of it as a rhythmic soup of vegetables and other fixings. The complexities sink to the bottom and give the soup flavor, and some ingredients rise to the top to be perceived by the audience--a quarter note triplet there, a nested septuplet here. The complexities that sink to the bottom influence our swing and our feel--it's multilayered and 3 dimensional jazz time, as Mike Longo used to teach. Every musician should think of the depth and complexity of time--as we already do with harmony and melody.
