Did anyone else feel Martin was incredibly dignified in this moment? He's just suffered a huge knock, the pool that made him popular has been destroyed, he's been deserted by everyone and to top it off Nelson steals his shorts and leaves him naked and alone. But instead of whining about it he just accepts that's what life has handed him and starts singing. Shows some real character here.

This episode is one of the best. I love how Martin goes from top of the world to rock bottom in a few seconds, and then just admits his defeat by singing Sinatra. I heard this was supposed to be the finale of the previous season but kicked forward due to the 1994 Earthquake, and thus had some more time put into it and I think it really turned a really good season finale into one hell of a season premiere. Truly one of the best, and has that little David Mirkin touch of being just weird enough to be believable but unbelievably funny at the same time.

After the relatively heavy and brooding “Rear Window” story (heavy and brooding by “The Simpsons” standards, anyway), Martin’s post-hubristic and lonesome rendition of the already-nostalgic "Summer Wind", at sunset and possibly the end of the summer, in a suburban backyard, was so wistful, so consoling, so serene... I still can’t put my finger on why it is that way. It’s one of those rare moments the series transcended itself. Perfection.

Simpsons in its earlier seasons: Wonderful stories, hilarious gags, memorable and sometimes heartfelt moments and endings as genius as this one. Even today, you can always go back to the classics and enjoy how brilliant they are.
Simpsons today: A melodrama of cringe, weak and forgettable jokes and episodes that end before can fully get into the story. The movie may have been a good send off.

@@oldaccount6297 I can tell you that it wasn't even one of the worst episodes. The show really started to go downhill when it switched to HD in season 20. But even then, it still had one or two good episodes. Although I stopped watching new episodes since season 23, I still got curious and watched one episode from season 31 - and it was the most awful Simpsons episode I've ever seen. No essence, just a collection of bland gags. Like I said, the movie would've been a great ending.

I think what I like the most about this scene is the fact that Martin is a third-tier character-- he was originally created to provide the one-note "teacher's pet" stereotype and nothing else. And here he is closing out the season premiere with a moment so emotionally arresting that people are reminiscing on it decades later. And the moment comes out of nowhere and has nothing to do with the main plot of the episode. An equivalent would be like if Badger from Breaking Bad or Hot Pie from Game of Thrones or Herbert the Pervert from Family Guy or Tweek from South Park had a moment like this. In less than 30 seconds we get more insight into this cartoon character's "soul" than we'd had before or since.

Thank you for this! I'm a dentist and the Frank Sinatra version came on the other day and I had never heard it and I started laughing in front of the patient because it reminded me of this classic Simpsons scene. I wanted to show it to my wife, as she had forgotten it.

One of the best endings to a Simpsons episode, and that's saying something. Sudden and deliberate yet completely out of context with the vibe of the episode. Goosebumps all round.

Without Martin, Wendell won't have any friends. He doesn't hang out much with Milhouse or Database and Lewis and friends with Richard. He clearly hates Bart for making him puke on the bus 30 years ago.
