Just brought one of these beauties home (Pure). Impressions: SOLID- There's a hefty, tight tolerance motorcycle beneath you and you feel it. Rumbly at idle and smooth at cuise. Fit and finish: Does not feel or look cheap AT ALL. Every facet of this bike is expertly executed. Suspension: STIFF. "Cheap" fork but actually very well sorted. Saddle: Minimal BUT quality memory foam...better than expected. Emptying the tank between breaks is doable on this bike. Riding position: Perfect! Great at highway speeds with slight lean into the wind, great visibility, great to alter your position as needed to maneuver. Exhaust: Sounds great, if a little loud for the neighbors. Riding experience: Soulful! You're gonna have to judge that one for yourself. It feels like no other because there is no other. It's a cool bike and you feel cool on it....which is the idea of the whole line. Pick your flavor of R NineT and have a hoot, I don't think you can go wrong.
@@rubensahak9178 Still have it, still think it's a phenomenal bike. I've added heated grips (get those equipped at the factory or pay $550 in parts and lol, activation at the dealer) and a Hepco & Becker rear rack. It doesn't need anything else in my book. Maybe a fancy paint job for fun...
@@mhitson7483 It's not really a novice bike. Sure, you could do it, but why pay a BMW premium when (assume when) you drop it? Small bikes with low power are much better teachers when learning to get the most out of a bike. Vitpilen 401 is where I'd look. I may get the Svartpilen because small bikes are so much fun.
I own this bike, but with the cast wheels, and it is the nicest ride I have ever had. It is my third BMW, and before this bike, I had 2 Sportsters, and a Fat Bob. I found it to be about the same size as my R65LS, but with way more power than my oil head R1000R. It is like riding a cloud, but a cloud that goes 100 mph. I actually ride mine to work, and 100 mph, has become the new 80 mph. As to the sound, well, I got used to it, but I do like that it is quieter than my HDs. I found a tachometer kit on the web for around 80 bucks, hope to get it installed this weekend. I would ad, the heated grips made this last winters rides bearable, too many years with frostbite, and this year, oh so warm. The only thing I find wrong, no back rest for the Little Lady.
The high tide of on-bike reviews. Always very well informed about the bike (no “I don’t even know what bike I’m riding but I’ll give my opinion anyway”), fun to watch, genuinely likeable chap, and can ride the danglies off anything. Cheers Zack, you’re a dude.
LOVE the bike...and I'm not usually a BMW fan. And your commutes always make me smile...thanks for kicking off my Friday. Now, I'm gonna hop on my VN 2K and commute myself...
I really love that thing. Before my grandpa died he bought and was in the process of restoring an old BMW, among his 50,000 other projects. I've been attracted to the "boxer" engine specifically and BMW bikes generally ever since.
Your impersonation of the bike at the end is amazing. It's goofy, but it's one of the things that makes this series so much fun. Best reviews on the TH-cams.
I had a V7 and found it too underpowered for me. Maybe the V9, but I didn’t like the position of the cylinder heads on the V7 too. Too close to my knees and I’m 5’ 9”!
I have seen them at dealers in the States... but I have never sat on one or taken one for a ride. I'm actually going to be near a dealer that has both V7s and V9s next month, and I might try and arrange for a ride.
I totally dig the V7! Came sooooo close to buying one but opted for Street Cup in the end. Love ‘em both. V9 tank looked a bit goofy to my eye, but ...
Agreed, lol. Obviously Zack is a very competent rider, but lane splitting at that speed would make me a little nervous, lol. Too many incompetent drivers in So. Cal.
After some time you get used to it and do it naturally. City splitting is great, but doing it on the highway gets me nervous since I had so many close calls.
I had a 2008 R1200R that I absolutely adored. I ended up selling it before moving to Germany, with the idea that I would buy another one when I got here.... I should have paid the extra costs to ship it here!! So same engine as the nineT. A couple of extra bells and whistles like ABS and ESA, and had a very tiny, but extremely effective windscreen on it. That windscreen took the majority of the wind blast off the chest, and gave you a very light breeze on your face, so with just a pair of good sunglasses, it was perfect. For a bike it's size, it was a bit on the heavy side, about 550 lbs. It came with the hard removable side boxes, and I added the smaller top case. A pair of crash bars around the cylinders and added a set of highway pegs on those. Out on the open highway, with the luggage full, it was one of the smoothest, and definitely the most comfortable bike I have ever ridden. But it truly was a chameleon. Pull off the luggage, and it was a canyon carver of great fun. Plenty fast enough for me, and would hug a line like no ones business!! Of course it couldn't keep up with a true sport bike. But it was plenty fun all by itself. I always keep looking for another one like it. Often they can be found with low miles (under 10K) around the $5k-$6k range, and often with the side boxes. In the next few weeks, I will be returning back to the US, and if I run across one again, I will jump on it immediately. Even though I have a brand new 2020 R1250RT waiting for me at BMW Motorcycles of Western Oregon, I will never forget how much fun that thing was to ride! Oh! And it had a Corbin low seat on it. I could easily lay down 500 miles a day on that thing if I was traveling. I hope I run into another one for scooting around town and playing on the twisties out in the mountain roads! Bob in Germany
Until Zack did the torque rev at the light, I realized that the Boxster engine's crankshaft runs along the axis of the bike unlike V-twins, triples, and inline 4's that run perpendicular to the bike. Neat!
Awesome review - I've had mine for about a year and the torque, exhaust note, impeccable fit and finish and great looks make it my favorite bike. I did put the tachometer on it which also gives a gear position indicator and a few other trip computer calculations (like mileage). Lots of fun around the city and a country road.
Oh man how much I love that bike!! If I could have more than one bike in my garage I would buy one of these and keep it forever... it is so beautifully engineered, so simple. Fantastic sunday morning commuter! Even a friday morning shuttle to the office?
I really wish BMW had an entry level boxer twin. 500 or 600cc and somewhere north of 50hp. I'm just not interested in the little single G310 or the F and G parallel twins. IT would probably never make it out of Europe anyway.
Hello my friend😉 Another fantastic commute with you there, and you described the experience of having bikes in the 70's, with the "smell of hot oil, when you get off", absolutely perfectly!!!! Love the style of video you do, and also, you are head and shoulders (literaly) above the competition, when it comes down to sensible riding. OK, the backing it in is acceptable by any standard, but you ride safely and courteously to others, and that, I like and support!😉 And one final observations I have, is.... HOW MANY TELEGRAPH AND POWER WIRES/CABLES ARE RUNNING THROUGH THE AIR AROUND YOUR PROPERTY???? ha ha, there looks to be hundreds mate!😂😂😂😂 Take care my friend and keep safe! (From a rainy England!)
When I serviced my rr got a scrambler version as a courtesy bike, I really enjoyed it, it was raining and it's the the only bike I rode where I could feel comfortable pining the throttle out of every turn with the rear wheel spinning, really flattered my riding lol.
R nine T Racer is perfectly comfortable XD even on longer trips. I did a 400 mile daytrip on it and i was fine in the evening. Even my dad managed to do 1100 miles in 4 days without any issues. You just have to commit to it :D I have to admit that the suspension is kind of soft for sporty riding, but it makes it very smooth on bumpy roads :)
Nice review. I've got the Scrambler version of the NineT and am not planning on getting rid of that bike anytime soon. Absolutely love the look and the surprisingly capable performance (after an Ohlins front/rear upgrade) in the twisties.
I love this bike! As technology continues to advance, particularly with these retro-styled bikes, I am surprised that BMW didn’t incorporate a digital gauge with navigation, gear indicator, and tach along with similar features into the cluster. The Indian Chief is a perfect example of where technology meets retro styling and I hope that BMW catches on to this.
Excellent intelligent review. As a longtime BMW owner I appreciate your in-depth knowledge of the company and the product. I have subscribed on the strength of this review. I was tossing up Pure vs R9T straight and on your advice will probably choose the latter.
I like these over the Triumph Bonneville models slightly because of the shaft drive. No chain maintenance to worry about. But the Bonneville models are also beautiful bikes.
Do you think the engine gives it a lower center of gravity and makes it handle better or is that just marketing fluff? How would you say if differs from the KTM Super Duke considering that lower center of gravity handling and also how it delivers power? Thanks for the review, keep up the good work!
Hey first time seeing you on here. Really cool review of the bike. It really shows through how much you love riding and how much fun you have with it. Enjoyable vid. Thanks!
As owner of 2020 r nine t 50 anniversary .. every thing u said in this video is true. Rly honest review.. i enjoy the bike and every ride is more fun than the one b4 it. .. rly nice retro experience at it best. It gives me the feelin of 60s james bond 💛🧡❤💚💙💜
I like the look of these bikes, but that old powertrain can be a lot of expensive maintenance - replacing the clutch, or lubing the splines, or a rear main seal failure, or a trans seal failure, or the clutch slave failing -- and you now need to split the bike in half to get in there and fix it -- $2-3k at the dealer out of warranty. I might wait until this line of bikes gets the wasserboxer...
I'm am begging you guys to post some information on 2 bikes. 1) The Yamaha Tracer 900 that is soon coming to the US to replace the FZ-09. It would be awesome to hear your thoughts before it comes on the market. 2) The BMW F 800 GT. Another bike I am seriously considering, but for some reason is difficult to get much information about on the web.
With the newer ones you can get traction control and the newer dual gauge setup is much nicer looking. That being said, I have the older one and love it.
I had one of the R100R’s from 1997 and it was the “old” boxer motor. It had a vibration at just around 2000 rpm and in the city I was going in and out of that rpm range a lot, so I found the vibration annoying. Did you notice anything like that with this model?
I will state, the bike itself when i describe style i love every tiny aspect of its character, its nice to ride on something that's got character, that brings itself to life instead of being a soul-less machine its gives you feedback and has little quirks and makes you smile when you sit on it, fewer and fewer bikes are often loosing their character for more approachable smooth running and soul-less machines
Hey Zack, What are your thoughts of the handling of this compared to the monster 1200 (both non-s and s)? Not really concerned with top speed or accelleration between the 2
Hi there, the bike looksgreat, how hot does it get in slow traffic? I’m currently cooking myself on a Ducati Scrambler, especially in summer here in France.
Hi i can see that you have the ASC light flashing is that an issue? I also have the ABS light flashing do you know if that is a default feature? I just got it and it is a 2017 so beautiful but wondering about the lights on the dash. Thank you in advance.
don't know about the price in US but in here in europe the spoke wheels are a 350$ option... unfortunately speed restriction are so high almost everywhere exept here in germany. this bikes kicks you really when getting over 70 mph.... this is where the funs just begins. btw: how did you manage the wheelies? pulled the clutch shortly?
Did you find the throttle overly sensitive? Would you spend your money on it or is there something else for the same money you would prefer? Is the Z900rs as much fun for a similar price?
Thank you finally a dud that knows how though a beamer . !! All the reviews ate boating grits . i live ghe boxer best bikes ever spatially the gs and the rd . bmw . very enjoyable bikes !!!!
So that does sound really good for a stock pipe and the attitude is cool! It was cool seeing all of the others as well at the intersections. I have never driven an apposed twin 1100+ I own an 2009 SV65S Vtwin so how is the power compared to that?
Watching this made me think I want a new bike, not this one, just something else, but then I remembered that the reason I didn't enjoy my ride today was the clutch was acting up even though it's a new cable and I was worried it would snap like it did on me the last time, I'll have to look into it tomorrow and see if there's fraying or something.
I love the air/oil cooled boxer on my '13 R1200RT (The last year of this motor) and I have just under 43000 miles with no issues! Maybe a test of the GS850 when you can. Thanks!
that thing is freaking rad!..... went straight to BMW's website and.... OK so the pure starts at $20,190 and the R nineT starts at $25,190 before a single accessory is added here in Aus... Sadly I shall never own one :'(
the word you were looking for is that it has a "Moto Guzzi-Like" feel to it... haha... yes, that's what a Guzzi feels like... not "industrial", but Alive!

Honda needs to bring back the CX bikes with the longitudinal Vtwin layout. Sure would bring some interest back to a really boring Brand.

Jacob L'Estrange Exactly, let me know when they do so.
They used to make a R850R boxer with about 70hp. Not sure if it was available in the states.
whats wrong with the 800 parallel twin?
I just don't find parallel twins as interesting to drive. Great all around configuration though.
Jacob L'Estrange they used to make the R45 back in the 70s my son has just finished restoring one here in Northern Ireland.
Added the tach to mine! Oooh so minty
Love your vids
Hey. I wanna do that. I hate not knowing what gear I’m in.
Hey Sidestand great videos, am thinking about putting on that same tail tidy you installed.
And they make your bike look perfect! Well done, Sidestand!
sidestand dude, should I get a T120 Black or RNineT Pure??
Hello my friend😉
Another fantastic commute with you there, and you described the experience of having bikes in the 70's, with the "smell of hot oil, when you get off", absolutely perfectly!!!!
Love the style of video you do, and also, you are head and shoulders (literaly) above the competition, when it comes down to sensible riding. OK, the backing it in is acceptable by any standard, but you ride safely and courteously to others, and that, I like and support!😉

HOW MANY TELEGRAPH AND POWER WIRES/CABLES ARE RUNNING THROUGH THE AIR AROUND YOUR PROPERTY???? ha ha, there looks to be hundreds mate!😂😂😂😂

Excellent as always. Was looking forward to this. Would love to see you take out the Kawasaki 900 RS and the V7 III Stone!
Yes! This! I actually put a downpayment on a z900rs a few weeks ago.
I love this bike! As technology continues to advance, particularly with these retro-styled bikes, I am surprised that BMW didn’t incorporate a digital gauge with navigation, gear indicator, and tach along with similar features into the cluster. What would be the point of having a retro bike and then not having an analog dash? Thats dumb
Excellent intelligent review. As a longtime BMW owner I appreciate your in-depth knowledge of the company and the product. I have subscribed on the strength of this review. I was tossing up Pure vs R9T straight and on your advice will probably choose the latter.
The scrambler looks interesting. More so than the pure to me
Ya think you will ever get a moto guzzi V7lll for a commute?
That 1200cc engine has a popular following in small experimental aircraft. That speaks to how reliable that engine is.
Pleaseeeeeeeee do the Hypermotard!!!!!!
I know people like to hate on the retro BMW's and usually for legitimate issues but god damn do they look and sound good.
I like these over the Triumph Bonneville models slightly because of the shaft drive. No chain maintenance to worry about. But the Bonneville models are also beautiful bikes.
Excellent review!!! I have seen a lot of yr rides to work and their always informative and entertaining. Keep up the good work.
Do you think the engine gives it a lower center of gravity and makes it handle better or is that just marketing fluff? How would you say if differs from the KTM Super Duke considering that lower center of gravity handling and also how it delivers power? Thanks for the review, keep up the good work!
I would rather have cast wheels, easier to take care of...
Bass Player they look better imo too. The cast rear wheel on the single sided arm looks awesome
And in the case of this bike, you'll have an extra $2400 in your pocket. They (the spoked wheels) are a ridiculously expensive 'upgrade'.
At that price you might as well go with the standard r ninet
14:39 the rev sound is so awesome 😭
Hey first time seeing you on here. Really cool review of the bike. It really shows through how much you love riding and how much fun you have with it. Enjoyable vid. Thanks!

I do like the safety net that's strung above your yard mate. :-)
Good looking machine and as always informational commute.
Thanks!
I have it and I love it 🤪
Rode this bike at the AIM Expo last fall. Cool little ride. Not sure I'd pay for one new, but used down the line maybe....

The wheels are €420 here, can't be the price you said. The €2740 option includes engine modifications and many other parts.
GSRider actually i think they are that expensive here. My brother in law was going to buy one. We were.shocked
I’m torn between the Pure and the new T120 Bonneville
I like the look of these bikes, but that old powertrain can be a lot of expensive maintenance - replacing the clutch, or lubing the splines, or a rear main seal failure, or a trans seal failure, or the clutch slave failing -- and you now need to split the bike in half to get in there and fix it -- $2-3k at the dealer out of warranty. My dad's former 1983 Honda CX650 Custom twisted with a throttle blip. Longitudinal flywheel effect.
Great vid. Been thinking of buying one. I would get the one step up with the dual gages but I think I trust your impression more than most.
I've seen your videos so much that, now I know the way to your office from your home!! Amazing content mate. Cheers!! :)
So, a new nineT pure, or a 2nd hand original nineT with the better suspension and brakes etc?
With the newer ones you can get traction control and the newer dual gauge setup is much nicer looking. That being said, I have the older one and love it.
I had one of the R100R’s from 1997 and it was the “old” boxer motor. It had a vibration at just around 2000 rpm and in the city I was going in and out of that rpm range a lot, so I found the vibration annoying. Did you notice anything like that with this model?
Nice ride, Zackie!
Is this worth the extra money compared to a Ducati Scrambler? Maybe a Ducati Scrambler MC Commute would answer my question...
Watching this review makes me miss my Rockster :(
The spiked wheels are a $500 option, well worth it, IMHO.

Hi i can see that you have the ASC light flashing is that an issue? I also have the ABS light flashing do you know if that is a default feature? I just got it and it is a 2017 so beautiful but wondering about the lights on the dash. Thank you in advance.
If you liked this bike's character, you'd probably equally enjoy the Moto Guzzi Griso.
True. But I prefer a bike that runs.
As a taller rider do you prefer the scrambler and urban over the pure?
don't know about the price in US but in here in europe the spoke wheels are a 350$ option... unfortunately speed restriction are so high almost everywhere exept here in germany. this bikes kicks you really when getting over 70 mph.... this is where the funs just begins. btw: how did you manage the wheelies? pulled the clutch shortly?
They should have named it "Stripped".
Or watered down or BUDGET.
BMW R NINETY BUDGET.
The tank cap looks like a "meh" smiley :)
I'm 6'4" and am wondering if this is any of the R9T models are for me? It's a gorgeous line of bikes but they look a little small. Any comments?
Do a commute on a Moto Guzzi... V9 or maybe one of the 1400s, Eldorado or Audace ?
My dream-bike right there... sometimes I wish I decided to go for the "make money and live a decent life"-lifestyle. haha
Too many straight roads in America... Not enough turns to enjoy this beautiful bike. Best to drive it in Europe.
Did you find the throttle overly sensitive? Would you spend your money on it or is there something else for the same money you would prefer? Is the Z900rs as much fun for a similar price?
Zack Courts Thanks for the feedback.
Thank you finally a dud that knows how though a beamer . !! All the reviews ate boating grits . i live ghe boxer best bikes ever spatially the gs and the rd . bmw . very enjoyable bikes !!!!
Are those the same mirrors as the Aprilia Tuono 1100?
Like the style, but was shocked by how wide the motor is on the left and right side of the bike. Also, this motor felt underpowered when I rode one
The Mud Butt noises from 5:54 to 6:04 just made my night
So that does sound really good for a stock pipe and the attitude is cool! It was cool seeing all of the others as well at the intersections. I have never driven an apposed twin 1100+ I own an 2009 SV65S Vtwin so how is the power compared to that?
Damn! That is one good looking bike!
Unusual aggressive driving.. I like it! Is it the raw german power?
Watching this made me think I want a new bike, not this one, just something else, but then I remembered that the reason I didn't enjoy my ride today was the clutch was acting up even though it's a new cable and I was worried it would snap like it did on me the last time, I'll have to look into it tomorrow and see if there's fraying or something.
YES! finally
I love that bike!
Im sorry somthing ir wrong with my phone . good ride man . bmw is best . must try them !!
I love the air/oil cooled boxer on my '13 R1200RT (The last year of this motor) and I have just under 43000 miles with no issues! Maybe a test of the GS850 when you can. Thanks!
Got a V7II which I am thinking about selling. Would love to hear what you guys think of the bike.
I want to buy the BMW g310, would really like to hear your opinion about it!!
Lets see the new Triumph Speedmaster or bobber! another great video!
that thing is freaking rad!..... went straight to BMW's website and.... OK so the pure starts at $20,190 and the R nineT starts at $25,190 before a single accessory is added here in Aus... Sadly I shall never own one :'(
$3,000 for a cylinder head cover kit?!!
the word you were looking for is that it has a "Moto Guzzi-Like" feel to it... haha... yes, that's what a Guzzi feels like... not "industrial", but Alive!
