A friend of mine from NY, where I grew up, was half Irish on her mother's side and her father was from Bahrain. Yeah, I know. Odd combo. I call her my wild Irish, Arabian princess. lol
Her father was a diplomat to the UN from Bahrain. So, he was well connected. My friend tells us one day the Emir of Bahrain is visiting NYC and because her father is the diplomat, she had to go meet him.
She told us after, she met him for less than 5 minutes. They had some small talk. Like, you have grown so big, my dear. What school do you attend? And, that's about it. When she was about to leave, he hands her an envelope and says it's a small gift for her. A small gift ended up being a cheque for $15,000! And, this was back in the 70's! Not bad for less than 5 minutes with an Emir.
At the time, I said, "Damn! 15 grand for less than 5 minutes! Imagine if you had spent the day with him?" She found that funny and still reminds me I said that to this day. 🤣
I ended up moving to the UK when I was 20 and my friend was visiting London with her father. We arranged to meet up and I was invited to stay with them in a "spare flat" the embassy had in London, used for visiting diplomats like her father. The "spare flat" ended up being in the heart of Kensington and was this amazing huge apartment in an obviously expensive building. My bedroom had its own lounge area, bathroom, a kitchen and dining area, the works. It was like something you see in a magazine.
Every day, while I stayed with them, my friend and her father had to have their lunch (or some afternoon meal) with the Emir, who just so happened to be staying in London as well. I was never invited though because I was just some American dude who just happened to be friends with a diplomat's daughter. Fair enough, I wasn't insulted.
My friend told me that the food was like something you see in a film or the Arabian Nights. There was ALWAYS far too much food made for the amount of people, which is meant to show off your wealth. In other words, "look at all the food I can waste." Not only was there an excessive amount, but it was all presented like a work of art and filled with decorations, flowers, you name it. This was literally done every day and with a new display of excessive, beautifully presented food.
