That is such an easy way to remember when to use "ni" with time expressions! I've never heard that before. If an English time-expression needs a preposition, then the Japanese time-expression needs "ni". Other Japanese time-expressions don't need a particle - so simple! ありがとうございました

But just to be precise, you can often find weekdays without the ni particle. Also, seasons and the words for morning and afternoon (午前 gozen and 午後 gogo) can be used with or without ni. On the other hand you can (rarely) find ashita with ni, in expressions like "ashita ni demo" and "ashita ni wa". So when you hear it, don't think it's a mistake
