“thank you song” is for her fans I’m pretty sure, not a lover. The whole mixtape is a gift for her fans who have been supporting her for so long. She says that her fans can use this mixtape to hype themselves up, especially with all of the snippets of her friends saying kind and supportive things.
Ever since MAGDALENE, twigs has been leaning into her “medieval” sound like you mentioned in a few tracks. I think it’s something that makes her really stand out in a good way. Her combination of medieval sounds w cutting edge electronic beats is always so fascinating.
I feel like the context of her previous work is integral in understanding how much of a triumph this project is. She’s expressed through her music and performances all of the pain and trauma shes been through. And with this new project we finally see her rise above it all. It’s nice to see her just have fun and show off a little more than usual. She’s truly earned it.
"minds of men" to me sounds like she's singing about wanting to support men by helping them dismantle all the toxic expectations of manhood. "Be the shoulder where he cries" as well as her singing "lay your troubles down and your heavy crown" and wanting to "crown you with my love" instead sounds like that to me at least.
She's not huge here in the UK but most people with their finger on the music pulse know who she is. She was brought to a lot more peoples attention after she done that interview with Elle and talked about her abusive relationship with Shia LaBeouf. It was pretty hard to ignore and a lot of people started liking her as a human being and then started to listen to her music. Personally, I think she's wonderful. I've loved her music since LP1 when I saw it for sale in Spiller records in Cardiff. (The oldest record store in the world!)
I know you addressed this at the start but all of her work is genuinely a must listen. Her debut album LP1 is an extremely forward thinking pop and RnB album that was one of the most acclaimed of 2014 and her EP M3LL155X in 2015 has these insane industrial RnB bangers. Shes kind of a legend at this point. Also the lighter tone of this mixtape is actually very different if you have listened to her previous work. Also it might help to have the background knowledge that she had an extremely public relationship with Robert Pattinson where she endured a lot of racism from his fans and she was also dealing fibroid tumours in her uterus this is what Magdalene mainly dealt with. Then we learned about a year ago that twigs had been in an terrible abusive relationship with Shia Labouef. So twigs being able to make something lighter is really good I just think you are underestimating twigs as an artist cause she has been one of the most influential of the lady 10 years and it isn't just like some pop artist and it's not weird for her to work with warren Ellis seriously check out more of her stuff this is her most mainstream album by far
I think you should start by listening to her EP’s and LP1. She collaborated with Arca for about half of her music during that time. From this growth you can see more clearly how amazing a concept album Magdalene was, and more clearly how this mixtape functions in her breadth. I really loved your raw interpretation and opinion though!
i'm a huge fka twigs fan and although Magdalene was great I think this one is a level above. Magdalene was about the traumatic experiences she was going through at the time, Caprisun is an album about building back self confidence after these traumatic experiences. And she conveyed that feeling amazingly in the music
Such a confident change of style for her, loving this. Some songs reminded me of previous stuff; Meta Angel felt like an updated, Charli-fied Water Me, and Minds of Men could have appeared on Magdalene or LP1 easily. Its refreshing, fun and just.. a vibe.
FKA twigs is an international artist like Bjork where she has her pocket of fans in every country. But she’s not necessarily a household name. Maybe in England idk
I was just listening to this when I stumbled upon this video. Either NSA has invaded YT or this is an odd coincidence lol. Loved this mixtape as well as her other efforts
I heard somewhere that the name twigs comes from the fact that her joints would crack alot during her dance performances when she used to do back up dancing earlier in her life. And I also recall there being some sort of legality issue with the name twigs where some other band sued her and after that she changed it FKA Twigs.
Honestly, if music keeps its current momentum all year, much like 2021, this could be another year just absolutely filled with great music. So far this album and Dawn FM are my favorite albums this year
Regarding twigs having famous ex’s: I believe she has dated Robert Pattinson as well as Shia LeBeouf and Matty Healy. I believe much of MAGDALENE had to do with her breakup with Robert Pattinson, so tears in the club may be about any of them
This mixtape has been so influential already at the beginning of its release. It is so beautiful and experimental and yet such a bop in every track. It is such a peak into her life and I am obsessed with it. So good and I loved this review.
Kinda disappointed that you felt like you didnt have anything to say about Magdalene… considering how so much couldve been said haha. Maybe you need to give it another listen cause you called it MagdalenA
I like to elaborate on your interpretation. I relate minds of men to the societal pressure woman are under to support, be there for and, be understandable with ‘great men.’ The whole song screams ‘I got this’ ‘this is easy to me’ Fka twigs delivery displays a total absence of worry to be in relationship with great men. Which is really a lovely thing to hear, since her troubled relationships with (not so!!) ‘great men.’ The medieval chants, twigs sometimes choiry delivery and the ‘down up (maybe the inevitable rise and fall of great men with added jouir) lyric made me think of Downtown Abby and costume dramas in general. This seems like a soundtrack for them. Maybe she is a fan. Maybe you are. Let me know what you think. ‘Know it’s a womans world’ (and the song immediately ending afterward is a nice choice) is an obvious underlying message yet of added value to actually clarify her message.
I really have been enjoying your videos. I like how you interpret music in your own way, and take a lot into account by trying to look deeper, while having fun with it in the meantime. That is how art should be consumed in my opinion. Your honest and lofi style feels refreshing to me. I discovered your channel via your 'Black Metal 2' review, and really enjoyed it. Lately I have been obsessed with Dean Blunt, but even more with Drain Gang. I found that you haven't made a video/review on them yet. I am really interested in what your take is on their music, especially on ecco2k's 'E'.
Twigs dated Robert Pattinson (in fact I think they were engaged at some point), and also Shia LeBeouf. Those are couples that make sense on the exterior because of their zany artistic sensibilities but obviously the surface ain't everything in a real relationship, and (Shia especially) those men have some issues for sure.
the "caprisun" thing is on purpose haha, it's a thing in the UK too.. that's why it sounds like she's slurping before she says it - my guess it's some sort of nostalgic reference
I haven't loved Careless because I suspect it's too similar to some of Twigs earlier work. Would have to relisten to point out which older songs in particular.
Chasing the dragon is the term people used to use in the era of opium dens, so it an old phrase that no one really uses for heroine/opiates now. Chasing and riding are very different verbs.
Magdalena and Magdalene are both used to describe the same woman. The pronunciations come from different parts of the world. You’re correct that the album is called Magdalene, but Skye is a French professor, and that could have some influence on his pronunciation. Either way it’s about the most minuscule difference you could use to tease someone :P
The delivery of that astrology interlude seems aggressively ironic to me, even though I don't think Twigs or her fans would be opposed to astrology in the least bit
Regarding her name...there was some lawsuit with another artist named "twigs", which she also went by. The story is available via a Google search, but that's why the FKA comes into play.
Fka is used because of a lawsuit around 10 years ago with someone else using twigs as their name, so she put fka in front of her name and told her fans it would stay, if I remember right it was a sensitive topic for her back then
Now that you mentioned Rosalía, you should definitely check her out. She is a hell of an artist, extremely talented singer, dancer, and producer Her album “El Mal Querer” is amazing 🌹
i think you could look into the history of the artist more before these videos, with the context of twig's recent life some of your off hand comments could be seen as a bit crude/insensitive :)
“thank you song” is for her fans I’m pretty sure, not a lover. The whole mixtape is a gift for her fans who have been supporting her for so long. She says that her fans can use this mixtape to hype themselves up, especially with all of the snippets of her friends saying kind and supportive things.
actually is for Solo, her dog that recently was found dead

@Battler Yes exactly. She was so insecure in LP1, and now she’s finally realizing her self worth with this mixtape.
"minds of men" to me sounds like she's singing about wanting to support men by helping them dismantle all the toxic expectations of manhood. "Be the shoulder where he cries" as well as her singing "lay your troubles down and your heavy crown" and wanting to "crown you with my love" instead sounds like that to me at least.
agreed
exactly how I interpreted it as well!

I don’t think she’s saying CAPRISONGS throughout the album, she genuinely is saying Capri Sun (in reference to her star sign)
I know you addressed this at the start but all of her work is genuinely a must listen. Not too difficult we are 3 weeks into the year 😂

Love yourself. Once you accomplish that, be open to loving others.
Hoping you review raving dahlia xx😊

I also thought of the right left pan as something that shouldn’t impress me because it seems so obvious, but It’s so fun to listen to
Talking about famous exes she has Robert Pattinson as her's
totally makes sense to me now that I love it so much as a kanye fan (mike dean). been listening to it non stop

fka twigs was originally just called "twigs" but was sued by a band called "the twigs" so she added fka to the start of her name
you should do a video on Live from Blackalachia by Moses Sumney
the "caprisun" thing is on purpose haha, it's a thing in the UK too.. that's why it sounds like she's slurping before she says it - my guess it's some sort of nostalgic reference

@@Mark.mp3 that’s completely fair! :)

Will you review After Hours tho?

She was dating Shia Lebouf
