- Mike Stringer performing a live one take playthrough of "Holy Roller".
TUNING:
Drop F# with the Kemper shifting to a low F, E, and D#
The Kemper is being sent midi from Reaper to trigger the de-tune patches, which is how it's happening in real time
GEAR USED:
Aristides 070SR (Lundgren M7 pickups) - Kemper - Focusrite 18i20 - Reaper
Thank you for watching!
This dude is a seasoned studio guitarist, man. He's spent countless hours refining his craft, look at his volume knob discipline, total focus all the way through, relaxed posture and playing. This is a masterclass.
Absolutely!
Definitely handles a knob like an expert
Calm down dude jesus
he's definitely skilled in his playing
the more I listen to them , the more I realize this just ain't some heavy growling band . their all extremely talented
One thing Spiritbox does well is maintaining heaviness while staying simple. After years and years of listening to metal, I appreciate this more than the speed of riffs.
I know what you mean. A lot of riffs nowadays you can barely hear. Spiritbox is incredibly refreshing
Mike stringer is a shredder make no mistake lol. There's plenty of complex moments in these songs. Like in secret garden verse.
Are we not gonna talk how smooth that volume control is?
For a $2500 Aristides it heckin' better be lmao that volume knob is probably suuuuuper smooth
@@jwspitz35 You like them smooth knobs ay bud?
Mike is pick scraping like he's trying to summon Joe Duplantier
...or Trey Azagtoth?
;-)
I laughed way too hard at this.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
A wild Gojira appears.
It reminded me of the gojira scrapes why
The level of stank face this riff forces your face to make is unparalleled.
So fucking true!
Lmao
you can smell it
listening to this live would give you a neck injury
it is universal stank face. hilarious watching all the reaction videos because the facial contortions are the same. The brow furrows and the lips purse and the eyes narrow like they want to look away from a light that is too bright but its to awesome too do so.
Those grooves are insane, I can’t stop listening to that song all over and over... -extremely addictive material- 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼
Me too, it's like BUTTER
Think I have listen to this song a 100 times today lol
@@aaronmusulin46
My head will not let me stop hearing this.
A Breath Of New Life Into An Ancient Art
The stuff that’s going on here is unfortunately going to be under appreciated by most who hear it. The level of thought put into what seems like such a simple riff is next level. What’s happening in the second verse with the constant down modulations so the song and feel continue to get lower snd lower (down) and how the vocals and lyrics match that is so great. That’s one thing about playing in such low tuning, and so distorted, there’s a lot that will just be lost in definition but fortunately on the right system can still be felt, fucking loving this band right now
Im only 43, been playing drums since I was 4. Studied drums, former session drummer. The reason I say that is, this is the first song in probably 15 years I didnt care what the drums were doing. I wanted to know what that stank face inducing riff was. This guy has that groove that so many look for their whole lives and never find.
"So, what tuning is this song?"
Mike: "Yes"
I think it`s Z or so, lol.
Drop F# and a pitch shifter
Winning comment 🏆
@@andrewfletcher4329 missed the joke homie
@@hu4lifefuckdeuce don't know why I commented that ngl 😅
0:55 when you go down a green pipe in Super Mario Bros
Killed me
Whaha! yes!
lmao killed me as well
Every single time I watch this I'm more and more amazed. The bending of the top string, the pick scrape, the richness of the guitar. It's all makes such beautiful music.
I love those mute armonics like gojira and then bouncy riffs
BOUNCE BOUNCE BOUNCE BOUNCE BOUNCE
There is nothing better than a super dope riff that grooves so hard your neck is strained mid-way through. Then combine this with the lyrics and it is off the chart insane face melting.
Holy Moly Roley Poley, that drop before the breakdown is so stank face inducing I still have mine on from when this track released.
The string attack! Adds the intensity that hits us directly in the chest. Love the tune! Awesome to see this.
This has been on repeat for 2 days in a row, this song crushes!!🤘🏾
Had this song on repeat since the 3rd 🤘🤘🤘🤘 love what you guys are doing
The current situation really sucks. In a parallel universe this band is touring and people are getting hyped to see this performed live :(
I love watching the vocal and guitar playthroughs. You both hold so much talent and musical creation in your crafts and when put together its some of the most enjoyable heavy music you can hear. Thanks for putting out banger after banger of songs. Can't wait for the full album release! 🤘
Bouncy, catchy, groovy, heavy. This song is absolutely incredible!
I remember moshing to Fall in Archaea back in the day. Dope seeing your stuff blow up. Unreal
The groove daddy himself. Mike is proof you don't have to be a technical player (even though it is clear he is a technical player), it's all about feel and this song makes me feel like bouncing. Mike, you really need to get these tabs out there in some form, a book or Guitar Pro files and charge for them. Not that many of us have the patience, time, skill or equipment to do the pitch shifting parts. I would love to see how your songs are put together though. It's evident in these playthroughs, the final studio versions with vocals have some of the details buried, like Blessed Be (which is a beautiful instrumental track in its own right). If it's not too much to ask, instrumental versions of your tracks would be awesome and I would gladly pay (as would many others). You guys deserve every bit of financial support you can get.
Killing it as usual Mike!
Thanks for the playthrough !!! just amazing , i cant seem to stop rewatching this and all of your music !!!
Makes what at first listen sounds like a super simplistic riff and song into a master class on how to make the chunkiest riffs of all time. This guy has quickly become one of my favorites. Spiritbox in general. So much diversity, so much uniqueness. Love it.
JESUS!!!!!! That was bad ass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We NEED both the guitar and bass playthrough for Rule of Nines. Make it happen.
i don't think i've ever done the "stinkface" so much lmao, so much groove!
But Seriously, as of 10 July 2020, this song is the best jam I've heard in months
UncleCheeseBurger Thank you. Love the username, btw ❤️
Agreed. Even my 60 year old mother listens to this stuff and she absolutely loves it :D
No cap... Song of the year thus far.. no discussion
Not the same at all, but check out Zeal and Ardor
I haven't listened to another song since its release !!
That's how you know a song is sick, when you're too busy appreciating the full song to pay attention to the guitar riffs. This playthrough is like hearing it for the first time again, equally as dope.
You guys are fast becoming one of my favourite bands! I'm enjoying looking back at these videos and bowing to the immense riffing and grooves. So excited to hear even more of this quality music! 🤘
I cant tell you how much i love you guys.... Incredible stuff
This feels like a "because we can" sort of song and I'm here for it
You guys make the best fucking music I've ever heard, I've been listening to all kinds of metal for years, but every track from you guys I'm like "wooow" everything is of the charts, musically, lyrics, vocals, production, everything!!
Liked it before watching it haha! because i know you're amazing! this song is awesome!
Just discovered you guys a couple weeks ago and have just been binging everything. Can’t wait to see you live.
Good groove my guy
Goddamn I love this track! Thanks for the playthrough!
1:09-1:14 that affect in the background reminds me of a band I grew up listening to in the late 90's and early 2000s, "Spineshank". I'm so glad I came across you guys!
Strictly Diesel is still such a great album
That band!! I still love them
I was fortunate to see them in a club after Hed Pe, System of a Down, and Fear Factory! 4/20/99 mooses club in Knoxville Tennessee. I just 21 ten days before. It was bad ass! Hed Pe, SOAD, and Spineshanks first album. FF obsolete tour. I also got a cassette tape of two Slipknot songs because it was a Roadrunner records tour.
@Snixbæ ty
@@slipknotpurity00 yes it is!
this is heavier than I've become in quarantine
This is the quality content I've been looking for. Caught you guys last year in Des Moines with Limp Bizkit. Best show I've been to in years
Thank you for the clarification on triggering the de-tune pitches!! Real MVP
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 So much love for you guys!!!
This second breakdown is awesome, dude
This makes me pumped for my seven string beyond belief great stuff Mike! Keep it coming!!
As someone with no instrumental talent, I love watching these videos!
Loved the new music video - great to see the shredding side of the song. Love this!
Incredible how the whole song is basically just 1 riff with few variations and it doesn't feel boring at all. Genius
They get that from meshuggah. Most songs that meshuggah writes are all based around one riff. You then can make different riffs by simply changing the pitches, adding or subtracting, reversing the rhythm etc.
Def wanna see some drum play throughs! Loving this! Wish I was up to this standard. You guys are definitely my favourite band right now. It's taken years for someone beat deftones but you are rocking it.
Those 4 pick scrapes in the riff, they are fucking savage to get accurate, and you can tell he digs how he played it from how his head bobs with the tune
Everyone thought that laser sound were pick slides... including me.. such dope riffage! Thanks for uploading!
Amazing as always!
Brutal, LOVE IT. Thanks for making this for us!
SUCH a heavy tune. Can't wait for the album
When does it drop?
LOVE well placed bends within a riff.
His picking hand is so smooth!! Seems effortless.
I literally don't understand how you can dislike any instrument playthrough from a band. What's there to dislike?
This song is sinister! I love it so much.
Someone asked me while playing it what Drop it was, I said Drop Dead....
shout out to the orange shock proof hard drive for keeping these precious recordings extra safe. We going to need em when Spiritbox is in the Hall of Fame.
This looks so satisfying as f. I want more!!
Absolutely amazing!
Awesome! Keep up the good work!
That bouncy riff is the fucking balls..!!! Groove in metal for me is everything..!!
Dude!
(The guitarist)
You are killin'it!!
Never look back!!
All the best!
M
the combination of heavy + groove + stank faces is perfect
what the freakin heck is this riffs??? that s sick as hell... never seen such a guitar play.
Absolutely beautiful
F'n banger guys...well done Mike.
This looks like alot of fun to play and probably a great practice song for learning to play cleaner , on the fly dynamics and of course, those scrapes , which I love btw.
How about sharing that Kemper profile , that would be sweet! ;-)
I didn't know I needed this but this is just amazing 🔥
Melody of guitars so cool
Awesome! I need the bass playthrough for this masterpiece!
Love this guitar and song! Nice job, keep it up!
so glad i found this band!! im amazed
insane how good and powerfull this is!!!
"looks simple enough, oh boy finally a Spiritbox song I can play"
*programs detuning*
"man y u gotta do me dirty like this"
this is just what I am going through .. darn
Aw 😔 this was gonna be the first song i learned when i get my 8 string in a couple weeks. Guess i'll have to be content with meshuggah
Blessed Be is real simple too tbh, almost more so than this.
Perennial is the next step :) it has some complicated parts but isn't terrible
@@yellowsaurus4895 You might've solved this already, but just in case. Since you're going with an 8 string, you should be able to play this by tuning the first 7 strings to drop F# and then the 8th string to D#, which will give you the extra range of D#, E, F, F# ,G.
@@AntonOhlin i actually kinda forgot about this song lol 😅 i'll definitely give it a shot with that tuning though. Thanks for the tip
Dude I'm so pumped off your guys' stuff I bought a fucking longsleeve lets GOOOOOOOOOO keep it moving \m/
Omg this is a whole new level what the.... 🔥🔥🔥🔥
dear mike, thanks for being born
I became completely a fan of you.... I sing a lot of your songs in my head everyday. The tune is sick too
I needed this.
I do EVERYTHING to this goddamn groove.
God of groove please make more music always stay true to this tune
The groove is insane
That is DEEPLY funky!
That sweet Aristides guitar, sick looking blade
|Goddamn, that's a killer tune. Beautifully brutal playing, definitely stealing some of those raking techniques. Bravo, sir.
Some may say simple, but there is so much nuance here. From the how and where you are picking, volume control, scraping and so on! 😎😎
Best song of 2020 so far.
Awesome playing , love the regular uploads. Multi scale-Long scale is where its at #924
Frickin awesome man.🤘🤘🤘.
I can't believe Mike's making me buy a 7 string guitar finally. I gotta play this
God, this song slaps SO HARD. Keep at it, guys.
So filthy, so groovy... I need more!!!
In the coming future, if they don't open for Deftones, I'mma riot
well since Stephen carpenter went completely dickfaced talking about flat earth and anti vaccin, and knowing how courtney has a look on things, I can sure tell you this is NEVER going to happen.
@@bartbakker742 Spiritbox, and especially Courtney, have cited Deftones as being a massive inspiration numerous times. There’s no way they’d turn down an opportunity to tour with them.
I'm from the future letting you know that I'm seeing Spiritbox in November at Rockville and they are playing on the same day as Deftones! So close enough!
Best I could do was Spiritbox / Limp Bizkit
Still hoping Deftones adds Spiritbox to their upcoming tour with Gojira that was rescheduled, since Poppy's no longer going to open with them.
Just found you guys. Glorious. 👍
this songs rips so hard. amazing.
