Teacher riding bicycle in Pittsburgh park electrocuted

- A Pittsburgh-area high school teacher died after he was riding his bicycle in a park and hit a downed power line on Tuesday night. KDKA-TV's Mamie Bah has more on the questions surrounding his death.
What caused the lines to be on the ground? You omitted the most important part of the story. 😮
If the line had been secured more loosely at the source end - that would not have happened. Too often, lines are secured tighter at the power end than the delivery end !!!!!!
Copper thieves who got their hot end source mixed up?
Maybe a tree limb fell on the line? At 2:00 where it shows the trail blocked by caution tape, there appears to be brush on the trail in the background. But the electric company might also have cut those limbs when they were repairing the line.
Trees trees trees
@@BillyLapTop its a 1000 times more likely that power company negligence is to blame. even most state regulated power companies are way more concerned with CEO pay & buying back stock than with power line maintenance.
Man takes care of his health but is killed by known live, wires. Just horrible.

Unfortunately freak accidents occur - sadly that's still how a healthy lifestyle 'works.'
You still die you just die in better shape.
@@JesgateOnDown 👍🏼I wrote that from life, experience. I had Just got done, working out. Picked up my son from his trombone session.. I could relate to his love of exercise, but then losing his life. Yes, we have no guarantees from second, to second. ☹️

The entire situation and timeline is completely unacceptable. An investigation by independent experts is needed for both police and electric company responses! Sympathy to the family and friends of the person who was killed needlessly in this tragic accident.
An investigation into why the infrastructure has not been updated because of politicians voting for green policies should take place.
2 hours after 911 call?? WTF!!! Unacceptable!!
2 min, 2 hours, 2 days at that voltage time was not a factor in the outcome. By the time the 911 phone call when through, the fate was certain. The immediate question is why the line was down and to prevent that from occurring.
@@mikewurlitzer5217 No infrastructure

Didn't you get the notice? Pittsburgh answers low priority 911 calls with voicemail.
WHY was the power line down? didnt even state the most important part!!!
It’s usually cost-cutting, including lousy maintenance, combined with something like heavy wind pushing a heavy branch against the pole or line or similar.
There was a severe storm, winds 70 mph.
@@mustbebornagainjohn336 thnx and good channel name!
Seems like a completely avoidable tragedy! According to the transcript they didn't even arrive to cut power until 2 hours AFTER he was electrocuted so 12 hours after the initial 911 call and police didn't put up caution tape until the next day. So sorry for him and his family and friends.
BICYCLIST WAS ELECTROCUTED BY 0:11 DOWNED POWER LINES IN NORTH PARK. THE CREWS ARRIVED TWO HOURS LATER TO CUT POWER. IN TOTAL, IT WAS 14 HOURS AFTER THE 911 CALL
Sounds as though Duquesne Power needs more manpower or better management or both.
Duquesne needs to not be handicapped by leftist politicians who vote for extreme green BS.
It is not nearly that simple. The grid is designed for multiple redundancy and reliability so it has multiple interconnections. A wire might break and fall. However, power can continue to flow in the grid around the break and then backfeed into the downed wire. The reason it may take longer to shut off that line is that the power company needs to isolate the wire at both ends First, the company needs to determine where the break is and where the isolation needs to occur. Then they need to send crews to those locations.
Bob was a good guy.i did a 24 hr mt bike race with him and 3 others that made up the team.way back in 1995
That poor fellow!
Money that could be used for safety upgrades goes instead to investors.
Investors are happy. Ordinary people not.
well, right now urban renewal funds are not available from the government. Democrats have that money reserved for Ukraine so you'll just have to wait a few years for any funds for infrastructure modernization. Ukraine needs that money more than America.
@@mrbubetube Baloney. Biden's infrastructure bill included 73 Billion to overhaul the nation's power infrastructure.
Wrong they go to Ukraine or Israel
@@mrbubetube It's clear and sunny today, with a chance of Mushroom Clouds.
We had a power line go down from strong winds/rain breaking a large branch. The power line was arcing on the ground next to our neighbors house. I called 911 in about 1 minute. Fire department(middle of a small town) is about a football field away and got there in less than 5 minutes. Because it was raining they could not use their insulated pole to move the line. Fire department was only spraying water on the safe side. House burned down and about 2 hours after the it happened the power company turned the power off at the pole. Power company sub station is about 1/8 mile from us. They could have shut the power off for ten minutes to save the house.
An antiquated system? for what they charge it should be top notch
If a person is completely negligent and it resulted in a death they would go to jail. When a corporation kills somebody out of negligence then they are hit with a strong warning. Also cops were derelict in not staying at their post.
Yes just like you guys, here in Canada many corporations just get a deferred prosecution, no jail time, just a fine.Which means no accountability, just a cost of doing business
People usually don't go to jail. What are you talking about?
Also there is no evidence this was negligence on the part of the power utility.
No excuse for this unacceptable situation.
The town is more concerned on catering to the new hipster doofus’s spending $3600 a month leases on condos, then fixing actual problems such as the streets/drugs/homeless/tearing down rundown garbage abandoned properties, and putting in stupid bike lanes. .
Wow, what?? How is this not an emergency?
NEEDLESS TRAGEDY!!! LAWSUIT.
That’s why the sympathy message said accident. Power owners don’t intend to take any responsibility.
Is there such a thing as a needed tragedy?
12 hours of gross negligence.

What does Duquesne do with all the money they collect? Never upgrading & constant rate hikes & taking over 2 hours to shut a switch bad bad bad.

Didn't they say at the beginning that the first 911 call came 14 hours before the power was shut off??? I didn't hear anything else about that!
Sounds like the Police dropped the ball on this. 911 call and Police ALLOWED the hazard to continue ?
Rest in Peace, Mr. Anderson.
14 hours??? The workers must be unionized..
you can try as hard as you want, and someone else's ignorance or mismanagement can get you killed when you least expect it. 2hrs to turn off the power is unacceptable, and no it isnt complicated to turn off power to an area that "expert" is a liar. the truth is that whoever was coordinating the ground response by the electric company doesnt care about their job or anyone's life but their own and thats why it took two hours to do a 10min job and it probably sealed that man's fate.
Oh dear. RIP. Prayers for his family.😢
Further proof the US is collapsing and fading away😢😢😢

2 Hours to shut off the electric? That is insane!
Maybe these power companies should update their equipment instead of giving the higher ups fat bonuses. A Good man living an honorable life was just rubbed out by another wealthy utility company. Thanks
This is BS and what incompetence on the part of the power co.

The critical piece of info, how did he contact the line?, not a word.
it seems he ran over the wire w his bike the current went tru the metal we had the man in mexicao electrocuted in hot tub and other freak accident man in pa hit by car mowing his lawn just by minutes wrong place
Awful!! Nightmare!! God bless. ❤
Was the Caution tape up before he entered the trail or after? Did he go past the tape is my question? Or was he on the trail not knowing the line was down. So sad!
after
It seems to me that it was before. Sounds like the power company did nothing about it for 14 hours - didn't even shut off the power until 2 hours AFTER he was killed.
Did you even watch the video before commenting?
@@nikiTricoteuse no he wouldnt have crossed any warning tape it was after if before they wd have done something sooner
@@rogerrosen2323 Yes. That's my opinion too. As l said, l think he rode into the wire/s before (any tape was put up). Absolutely avoidable tragedy, if the power company had acted in a timely fashion.

In 13 hours, they could have driven across the entire state and back and had time to leftover.
Smiling while saying there is no quick way to shut off power, knowing a man was being electrocuted is SICK!!! Fix the problem!!! The electric company's response time is ridiculous and unacceptable. A group of children could have come into contact with that electricity while nothing was being done.

My sincerest condolences to his family and friends.😢
What a tragic Loss.
The mans death was tragic, but what is even more disturbing is that our electrical grid, the infrastructure, is dangerously antiquated, and seems in need of massive upgrades. But hey, we have to pay for other things, right?
ilive in a tiny little country county and our electric company would have never taken that long
Sad
With the technology that's been available since the 1970s why isn't power cut as soon as the wire separates from the pole? The expert commented that remote shutoff would be nice but why should ANY human intervention be required?
Death penalty for riding bike in park?
Unless it was unintentional, the Power Company is at fault for not turning the power off right there.
RIP. SO SAD.
OH NO !!!.... Dang.... ☹🙏
Why didn't they block the bike trail?
They did. Didn't you see the yellow tape in the video?
@@GH-oi2jf yes I saw the yellow tape. They blocked the trail because the man died. Why didn't they block it off because the power line was down, it was a danger to the public
Yes, police and power company should have both sent people to block access, in the 12 hours between when the line was first reported down, and the man was reported dead.
Family should sue
Unacceptable
Shocking!
Shouldn't a short to ground cause a breaker or transformer to blow?
If a line is down, it doesn't necessarily mean a short. He probably came in direct contact with the wire while riding his bike.
WHY CAN'T ANYONE DO THEIR JOB ANYMORE, BUT THEY WANT MORE $$$$$

"...antiquated systems"
Yeah, even in 2024 we STILL run all the electric power on 1850s area technology of using wooden telegraph poles and copper wires strung across the land
So sad!

What a damn shame!
It's seems that you are not safe anywhere at all. Sorry for the loss of life. May he rest in peace amen.😍😍😍😍😍😍
About a year ago, I rode my 🚵♀️ mountain bike over a LIVE, downed power line. You see, there was 7-inches of new snow on the road, and I couldn’t see the downed wire until I was right on top of it. The LIVE wire made a narrow, black groove in the fresh, even snow. The wet LIVE wire was even melting the asphalt.
“Hollie Geitner […] Director, Communications and Brand” for Duquesne (DLC)
There was a time when branding, image, insincere messaging and PR weren’t a big part of corporate “communications” because more people believed in corporate accountability & responsibility ffs.
What a disgusting & corrupt country we are.
I thought my power company was bad (PEPCO) but this is a whole other level of despicable corporate negligence.
I’ve always said that if electricity was “invented “ today, with this wimpy public attitude, it wouldn’t be allowed to be transmitted.
This is why I don't leave the house.
This is shocking .
your comment is revolting.
The utility company didn't know that the line was down?
Expect the unexpected when God calls you go.....deepest sympathy for the family
When they use the old "Ongoing Investigation" excuse, you know something is wrong!
"Unfortunately...our infrastructure is really antiquated" 1:33 And yet we are going to go all electric on vehicles.
The police dont have to answer calls anymore so why should the power company 😮 this is sad. Nobody cares anymore
The delay is unacceptable. EVERY power company's substations have SCADA controlled breakers that can shut down power in seconds or a few minutes at worst in an emergency. Why don't they? Greed. Those switches/breakers WILL disconnect several hundred or more customers. But hey, better to lose a couple thousand in revenue than try to save a few lives, right? 😮 Better to endanger first responders and the victim(s) for hours waiting for a crew to respond. The victims family should sue them for several million, far more than blacking out an area for a while would cost.
There are power companies being sued out of existence for not having these breakers. Out west it is multi Billion dollar fires and lotsa death. There is a company in my town makes breakers to shut power off in case of a fault on these lines and they are behind forever in making product because of demand.

Extremely dangerous but we will get there when we can
Avoidable!! Poor dude. 😢❤

whats mrs pecora my teacher doing on the news
she's way too happy to be on the news to comment about a man dying tragically
no thats just her voice lol
i moved out of pa many yrs ago .but i saw what some town's did example the town rented streetlights from peco and we got lites and wires fixed quickly town decided to buy the lights outright took weeks to get light fixed the deal was peco had night crews fixing things but as more towns did cuts without looking further residents get less service and peco have less reason to have night crews . i wonder if similar reasons in pitts. a city in failure look how few cops on overnight sometimes better service is worth the extra cost
