    The transport charge on the VISA/MASTER card after month end. Some local hawker centre stalls do business during breakfast, lunch, dinner time period or mainly breakfast till lunch time period & close after 2pm

      Yes! It’s quite nice when you know the operating hours before so you can plan for it but we thought that 9 am for breakfast would be still fine 🤪 It seems like some of the beloved stalls are having a stable clientele and are finishing up quite early! Nevertheless, we loved our Kaya toast and drinks from the other hawker too 😍

    The area around Sultan Mosque is now populated by Arabic restaurants and shops. Indeed the streets in the area are named after places in the Middle East such as Muscat Lane after the capital of Oman, Baghdad Street after the capital of Iraq, Bussorah Street and Subhan Street after cities in Iran, Kandahar Street after a city in Afghanistan and Aliwal Street after a city in Punjab. Of course Punjab isn’t in the Middle East but then neither is Bali. Bali Lane is one down from Haji Lane. Of course there is Arab Street too.
    The actual Sultan’s Palace (or Istana in Malay) is across Kandahar Street from the mosque. It now houses the Malay Hertiage Centre. The area was the epicentre of Malay royalty in Singapore and it is no surprise that due to the royal mosque, it is also the centre of things Muslim too. Over time, other Muslim eateries started up there too like the Turkish and Lebanese restaurants which weren’t so predominant when I wasn’t a kid. Other old-time shops associated with Arab traders such as the carpet shops, spice shops, non-alcoholic perfume shops, etc, still remain but in smaller numbers.

    • @JayandKarolina
      @JayandKarolina  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is so interesting! We thought it just happened naturally over the years that Kampong Glam became more friendly for Muslim/Middle Eastern people but would never sat that even Malay royalty used to live there.

      @@JayandKarolina When Raffles set out his plan for Singapore in the early 1800s, each community had their own areas, leading to what is Chinatown, Little India, the Malay areas of Geylang and Arab Street. Today, the government is doing the exact opposite by mandating that every housing estate should reflect the national ethnic proportions and thus would prevent racial enclaves or neighbourhoods. This may dilute the ethnic identity of certain areas, but for a small and diverse country, prevents the us-vs-them problems that may arise if people just congregated according to race. Also, such racial isolation would prevent exposure and understanding of other cultures.
      Glad you’re enjoying Singapore.

    my strategies for coping with the heat, that even some of my fellow locals miss out on ;) :
    1. wear thin shirts and sandals/slippers, I even go commando if I am not with people
    2. frequently put water on my face, neck, arms and legs (water from water bottle or shopping malls' washroom). On certain big event, freeze water/drink bottle into ice, wrapped in newspaper /towel to absorb moisture; and when you are out, remove the newspaper/towel and touch the cold surface to feel cold, and drink it later.
    3. always have an umbrella in my bag, use it if shade/shelter is not available
    4. always have a flapping fan in my bag

    I can explain why they charge drink as high as the food you order. Sometimes when food is really cheap, seller won't make much money from it so they took a lot more profit from your drinks. It's just a marketing subsidizing profit technique. Nothing fancy tbh. We do it quite a lot in Indonesia as well.😅

    I can see the point you were trying to make showing how inexpensive Singapore can be & your right it can be for most of your time spent there that's why it does upset me when people do say how expensive it can be but that is only in certain aspects saying that I was cheated using the mrt once. I'm in Singapore for a two night stopover in just 6 days time & no way will I be on a budget still I'm going to explore the night-life. Cheaper:
    - instead of vending machines, get your drink from the supermarket or the thrift shop (these are usually located in the heartlands). Usually cheaper 25-50%.

    As for the ice-cream, the uncle will give you a plastic bag by default. I think it is because of the camera, he decided to put the ice-cream into the plastic bag. Most local ice-cream uncles won't put the ice-cream into the bag for you. They will pick out a plastic bag and put the ice-cream on the unopened plastic bag, so plastic bag is more like a plastic sheet that you hold onto while eating the ice-cream.

    Singaporeans don’t really like to be filmed. Some mind it more than others. We just usually choose to ignore, if not confronted. And as with all places, some people are nicer, some are not. That explains the aggressive guy. Given the location and you weren’t giving him biz, testosterone took over.
    Kampong Glam/Arab Street/Haji Lane is a tourist and hipster place, successfully redeveloped maybe 20-30 years ago? It wasn’t like this all the time. And because it’s a traditional Muslim place with the mosque, you get similar type of Muslim middle eastern restaurants.
    Singapore is a very expensive place. Of course there are cheap places as well but these are rare. If you are traveling, don’t mind a budget experience especially since it’s simply a holiday experience in a different country, then one can research and be disciplined and do what you did. But if you live here, need to go about your day, then you probably will start finding it expensive in not replicating what you did on a daily basis.
    The roast meats stall you found is truly exceptional for the price and quantity…..kudos to you. Drinks-wise, it’s really getting expensive, like everything else. Some are trying to earn more as is usually the case in Singapore while others are forced to price up due to rental, usually in coffee shops. There are still reasonable prices around, for now, but you probably need to be local in that neighborhood even, to know. For mid-level drinks pricing, head to supermarkets and thrift shops like ABC/Valueshop.
    JB is cheap for those capitalizing on exchange rates. To the locals it’s getting very expensive. I go to JB often and have seen prices going up a lot. Think the locals are feeling the pinch too. Having said that, there are places that are still quite cheap because tourists and Singaporeans don’t go there.

    • @JayandKarolina
      @JayandKarolina  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for sharing all your thoughts 🙏 VERY USEFUL!
      Considering that we’ve switched the countries quite frequently, it became more transparent for us which nations value their privacy rights (e.g., South Korea, Poland) whereas Singaporean seemed way more chill when filming 😉 But I agree that in countries like Malaysia or Indonesia people are way more opened for the camera!
      We were super happy with the duck/pork rice dishes we got because being totally honest, it was the very first time we had a meal for $2/3 SGD 😳 Normally the price varies between $5-8 SGD.
      It’s not a surprise that JB becomes more expensive because 1) people who come there for Singapore would pay for it anyways 2) inflation 😂 It’s probably going to level up to the prices in Singapore!

    A general rule of thumb for Singapore local fruit juice stalls is that they don't put sugar to the fruit juice drinks that they sell. Any sweetness from the fruit juice drink is the natural sweetness that comes from the fruit itself.

      @JayandKarolina  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's what we love the most - pure natural fruit juices 😍💚

    • @JSimHZ
      @JSimHZ 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@JayandKarolina So in Singapore, you won't need to tell the fruit juice uncle 'no added sugar or don't add sugar'. The fruit juice uncle will know by default. The only special request that you must tell them when ordering is if you want 'Less Ice' or 'No Ice' in your fruit juice. 'Less Ice' or 'No Ice' will incur extra charges though. If I remember correctly, 'No Ice' will cost an extra $1, so if a particular fruit juice drink costs $3, the fruit juice drink with 'No Ice' will cost $4.
